This trailer has nothing whatsoever to offer besides unabashed nostalgia bait (literally just showing props from the old films). Take out of the ghostbusters name and props and this trailer would have 50 views. People have really, really lovely attitudes towards comedy. 2016 Ghostbusters trailer had some jokes that didn't land and it drove people absolutely insane. This trailer trades comedy for nothing and people happily lap it up. Polo-Rican fucked around with this message at 18:28 on Dec 9, 2019 |

I'm not sure I understand the attitude of "it has Ghostbusters props, so its just nostalgia bait". Did you expect a Ghostbusters movie to not have the ghost traps and proton packs and to not show them off? It's not like its just some random props thrown in for no reason, it seems to be a direct continuation of the original story. We already know a ton of the original cast is in it.

Any long gap sequel is going to trade on the basis of the audiences fondness for the original, I don't think it's a bad thing if it is executed well. This looks like it can go interesting places in a narrative sense, what does a world look like thirty years down the line where everyone accepts that ghosts are real? How does it affect religion? Are there books, TV documentaries on the subject? Are people less scared of dying now that they know there's something else? That's all fun stuff that the film can play with.

I think it's a fine line between the two - you can throw in little blink and you miss it references or you go full bore "this is what you came for!".

We've only got the trailer to go on right now, but it seems reasonably consistent with the tone of the first movie. Well it's definitely a comedy, but all the stuff is in-world funny happenings. There's no out of character jokes. The world takes itself seriously. Compare it to something like Anchorman. Its a different kind of comedy.

It's the mixture of the mundane and the supernatural which makes it funny. A demon possessing is spooky, but a demon then trying to interact with New Yorkers with his ancient sumerian frame of reference is funny.

The original definitely walks that tightrope better that almost any horror/comedy ever made. It's a combination of a lot of things. For one, Reitman insisted that the special effects had to be top notch so that the audience could take it somewhat seriously during the important moments. The idea of going to people who'd done effects for Star Wars and Poltergeist and paying top dollar for a goofy comedy was something he had to push pretty hard for, if I remember correctly. Then there's Murray, who manages to play his character absolutely perfectly in terms of the goofy sarcasm but with a sense of gravity when the moment required it. The scene with Weaver floating above the bed for instance, you can see Venkman start out as his normal self and he maintains that throughout the scene but you can also see him get more and more concerned as he realized that something Not Good is going on with Dana. The other characters are more or less the same just to different degrees. There are aspects of their personalities that are funny, and it leads to comedic moments, but they are also well written and well acted enough to make the serious moments work. Of course, the word "serious" is relative, nobody would confuse the serious moments in Ghostbusters for Cries and Whispers or anything like that.

Everybody in the restaurant watches it goes down, then goes about their business. That in itself is an old joke ("New Yorkers are blasé about anything weird"), but it's definitely not a world that takes itself seriously.

I liked the trailer fine, although I was surprised there weren't more jokes. Still, if this movie turned out to be more of a drama/horror than a comedy, I wouldn't mind, so long as it was good. I have a feeling the marketing is working overtime to establish that this will have a different tone and it won't be full of comedy and it won't be like the original films or 2016. Trailers and posters are sort of where you lay down for the audience that laps everything up (that's us) what to expect. It's touching that the movie seems to be about the Harold Ramis's character's legacy, though I confess it's hard to imagine Spengler ever starting a family—his character struck me as someone too devoted to his work for that. I also hope the film doesn't reveal that he, like, abandoned his family or whatever. Perhaps he came to the small town to investigate a big supernatural thing brewing (perhaps the same thing Shandor Mining was once after), and brought all the GB stuff to set up a base, and then died (or was killed?) during the work.

I know a lot of people are dismissing it as a nostalgia cash in but so what, the GB equivalent of a Force Awakens treatment seemed so far away for decades I really couldn't care if that's all it is, as long as I have a blast watching it I don't need it to be on par with GB1984.

Egon definitely could've settled down with a Janine-type woman who is very assertive, the type that sees something they want and goes after it. Because we know he wouldn't be the one to initiate any relationship, but I've know several guys who are like that who stumble into marriages because the right woman came a long and made it happen.
