It's not even all the telepaths, it is basically just Byron. Also the wasted potential and a weird lack of continuity. I mean, this isn't the first time they have a colony of rogue telepath on the station, but for some reason, this time the relationship is very antagonistic, for reasons that felt very forced. Sheridans sudden mistreatment of Lyta also comes out of nowhere. Franklin, who actually ran the prior railroad, has no interaction with them at all this time, which also doesn't seem right.

Last time was both secret and unofficial. This time isn’t just official and public, it involved the direct intervention of the new President of the Interstellar Alliance. S5 spends too much time on what the telepaths are up to and not enough on the political pressures that creates, but there’s two clear contexts to their arc: the bit involving Lyta, and the bit involving this being Sheridan’s first big political gently caress up. One presumes the latter element would have worked better with Ivanova, station commander, starting opposed to the group and ending up boffing their leader.

The lack of Franklin involvement may have been a bad oversight, or the end result of the deal they cut with TNT to get the fifth season, which involved not having most of the cast for more than 13 of the 22 episodes.

Sort of spoilery - New watchers skip over...

The Franklin thing was covert. Byron’s group is anything but. They don’t want a quiet escape, they want to be in your face, despite what they say out loud.

WRT Sheridan and Lyta: I was actually paying attention to that on a rewatch because I thought it was jarring too. If you pay attention, he’s pretty much always treated her as a tool, he was just more polite about it earlier on. Could be her close relationship with Byron and her suddenly demanding to be recognized just puts him off. Even people like Sheridan act like dicks sometimes. It could also be that the part of Kosh that’s in his mind being really put off on how Lyta is using her powers has some bearing.

But IMO the *PPG powers up* “You’re not the only person who’s been touched by a Vorlon...” line is so goddamn worth it.

Is there anything more to that story? First I've heard of this aspect of the deal.

Yeah, like in "Epiphanies", he threatens to turn her over to the Psi-Corps if she disobeys him. Or how she was unceremoniously tossed out of her quarters because the Vorlons weren't paying for them anymore - after Sheridan threw a complete childish fit when Earthforce wanted him to move to smaller quarters. Or how nobody even bothered directly telling her Kosh as dead. She really gets treated like crap throughout the series.

(And, of course, there's Sheridan's use of the cryo-teeps as human bombs... Dude really isn't a champion of telepath rights.)

Going to burn through the last two episodes tonight. Then it'll all be over. Except for the movies.

Going into the end it sure feels like a four episode epilogue. Not much happening and just moving everyone off of the station. Was some nice character closure, but a very different feeling than I'm used to for a television show.

I'm not a crier, but I sure got the feels. I need to think on it more, but while it was somewhat nice seeing the Centauri bit I don't think I needed the 21 season 5 episodes and could've gone straight to Sleeping in Light after season four.

Also holy hell the makeup difference on Delenn, Londo, and G'Kar since the gathering!!!

Going to start the Expanse tonight, hear it's the next incredible one to watch. I'll get around to Sense8 and Travellers which are also mentioned while discussing B5. I'll sprinkle in the B5 movies and maybe a bit of a rewatch now that I know the full arc, but am so glad that I remained nearly spoiler free for this whole watch.

Brilliant show. I'm better for having watched it.

I don't usually rewatch season 5, but I always got the impression that Lyta was just treated like crap. Getting thrown out of her apartment, with the Sheridan quarters subplot you mentioned in mind, that always felt terrible to me. Poor Zach who had to tell her the news. I thought Lyta was pretty justified in being fed up with all the crap she had to deal with, it was mostly Byron who led the whole thing into disaster. I'm glad that others also got a similar impression.

Think I'll stick with The Expanse for now then. Being a part of modern 'prestige' TV it won't take me as long to binge through with half the season size. The first episode was really good and I really like the universe they're building.

I always thought it was interesting how on nearly every one of Talia’s appearances, she needs the other characters to help her out of a jam. The only time she’s asked to do something sketchy, she refuses, then slaps Sheridan for tricking her into doing it. But they like her, so she’s nearly invited into the inner circle.

Lyta is never anything but helpful, but when she needs something she’s always on her own.

It’s pretty consistent across all fiction that when there are two men who fight and then come to respect each other after the fight that a significant number of people also want them to gently caress.

So glad you enjoyed it. I avoided the thread for a bit just to make sure I didn’t spoil a thing for you. I still want your takes on the different characters. The big two definitely but the others as well. Definitely one of the best series ending of all time. I always found it odd that of all the departures, Doc Franklin’s hit me the hardest. No fanfare, no cheering crowds. He just gives a small melancholy smile and walks into the unknown.

Agree with the thread that Lyta had it rough. Always hoped she had a better life offscreen as B5 just put her through it.

They didn't know if they'd be cancelled or not, so they recorded a proper series finale. Then, surprise, they weren't cancelled, so they moved that finale to season 5 and made that! I didn't hate it but yeah, it's a bizarre episode.
