Not particularly, you're not expected to stand there and argue policy. A lot of times your interactions will be pretty brief, just a few questions like 'can we count on your vote? How did you vote last time? Do you have aby particular concerns you'd like addressed?'

Just be nice, be smiley, be respectful, and don't panic. Stick with your friend until you feel comfortable doing it yourself. Or just stick with your friend throughout, you're still a warm body and a symbol of our numbers just being there.

I got told off by my canvassing partner for being too manipulative last night. There was a woman and her 8-year-old kid on the doorstep, who has some kind of condition that means they often have to go to A&E. I asked the kid if he liked waiting around for hours to be seen by a doctor, he said he hated it. I switched back to the Mum and went through Labour's NHS plans with her, as well as chatting about the picture of the boy on the floor.

Perhaps bringing the kid into the conversation was a biiiiit emotionally manipulative but hey, I'd like to see her vote anything other than Labour now.

We saw how fast his people moved to threaten to “review” Channel 4’s licence when it empty-chaired him for refusing its climate debate. Ofcom backed C4: what price will it pay?

Some think the failure of Corbyn to instantly expel all leftist purveyors of antisemitic filth would normally be a reason to deny Labour a vote. But these are not normal times. Behind the jovial bluster, Johnson is the greatest threat seen in our lifetimes. When the economy tanks due to his Brexit blunders he will do what the far right always does, distracting attention on to foreign “enemies”, using crude racism and attacks on “elite” judges, civil servants or any upholder of rights.

It's fine. Emotional manipulation is a key part of politics - you're not lying to her, or being deceitful (like IDS literally telling people that Labour are going to sell their houses) - people aren't logical facts-based-evidence automata who'll weigh up all the available evidence to form a reasonable conclusion - we're driven by emotion.

And hell, it's the kid's future too. Use whatever pivot you can find IMO.

Tell your canvassing partner to go for it - best outcome is either a vote for Labour, or least worst, potentially denying the Tories a vote.

From everything we've seen, the Tories should be relegated to 3rd place with the Libs a distant second, and yet we're celebrating the possibility of getting close to 50/50. I mean that's definitely cause for celebration, but it's also a searing indictment of the stupidity of the general population. It's easy to blame it on 'Workington man' types the trump safari piece was about.

The thing is, the way this guy has tied his head up in knots that all lead back to 'boris good' reminds me of my tactical lib friend. It's so hard to find somewhere to start unpicking the knot of "Oh I hate Boris, I actually like labour policy; I hate Swinson, but I'll vote for her because breggsit is too important."

I tried saying she'll enter coalition just like they did back in 2010 but no, politics is different now - surely sensible centrist Jo; will see that. I tried saying the bar charts were dodgy and showing him the previous votes, but no - everything changed when the fire nation brexit attacked. I tried saying Jo; voted with the tory whip more times than Gove, but that led straight back into the centrist loop of 'Oh I know she's poo poo, but we need to choose the lesser of two shits and ignore the stuff we actually want.'

It's the same idiocy as the guy in the article knowing everything around him has gone to poo poo, but it can't possibly be the tories who've been in power for ten years, it must be the unelected eurocrats! Boris will break us free and Unleesh Britaine™ so we can be great again, and we do that by... Kicking out the foreigns?

There are these bullshit talking points the papers are repeating, "brexit will unleash Britain" on the right and "Corbyn's unrealistic, vote for the lesser of two evils" in the few centrist rags left and on #fbpe twitter and centrist dad facebook, and they just keep everyone circling the drain.

The melt friend actually said on FB the other day that it is more important to vote against something than for something. And this is a guy who works with people with learning disabilities and who's wife is in ATOS hell, who's intellect I consider superior to mine in most other ways; Even he is saying things like 'local elections don't count' when I show him the constituency results from 2017 and 2015. He thinks he knows politics in the same way I thought I knew politics before reading this thread, and if I push him, he's just going to get defensive about me calling him stupid and double down.

Just like Corbyn's position on brexit, people want a simple solution to incredibly complex isdues without having to do the legwork of actually understanding how parliamentary majorities and EU relationships work. For all that both sides (both main sides, the centre and right) of the country are screaming about democracy right now, none of the fuckers seem to know anything about how it works.

It's not just the Workington Man types who've tied their addled brains up with this poo poo, it's libs as well who'll give Swinson the votes she needs to prop up the Tories. It's just incredibly frustrating that we have an absolute barnstormer of a campaign, and yet the best metric we can realisticly hope for is a hung parliament which somehow produces a Corbyn coalition.

That's how poisoned modern journalism has made the debate.
