I am afraid Corbyn will feel he should be studiously neutral about the choice of his successor, but I really wish he would give someone a clear endorsement. It was his long history of activism and being Correct during Blairite rule that made the membership trust him enough to support him repeatedly despite all the propaganda. We do still need a leader we can trust not to be a windsock, and an endorsement would be helpful.

I guess if there's hope for turning middlesbrough south red again it's that they built a bunch of new houses here since 2017 and we do relatively well on the new estates full of young families and giant mortgages.

Whether it'll stop the hitherto inexorable slide into torydom I don't know.

So who's the next Tory leader going to be?

Is this the fish man's time to shine? Could Patel take a run at it?

It's interesting that only the Express tomorrow has an explicitly anti-Labour front page, about the Ashworth recording.

Most others have gone with the tightening of the polls, apart from the Mirror which has that damning interview with Jack Merritt's father and the Sun which just has a big pro-Boris splash.

It's kinda weird, in 2017 we had 'Apologists for Terror' with 10+ pages of hate piled onto Corbyn and Abbott etc. the day before polls opened.

Have they realised it doesn't work? More interested this time in turning out their vote?

Yeah this is what I'm feeling... It's scary to think that we'll all just "go back to normal" if Thursday turns into a rout. And even if it doesn't he's getting old. There needs to be an anointed successor. The idea that Blair's ghost could come back and posses the party would cripple me more than a loss this election.
The existence of true mainstream socialist alternatives who have the chance to win power is about the only good thing to come out of this Trump-ridden neo-liberal hellworld that Thatcher and Reagan summoned upon our planet.

Yes it's this, telling people the polls are close pretty reliably increases turnout and that's going to make all the difference to the results for this one.

I've said it before and I'll mention it again.
Enfield North has a candidate who was parachuted in by the NEC/Unite after the local party had started their nomination process for candidate.
The ground game this campaign has been really weak, probably because - on the back of a really strong local ground campaign - the Labour vote-share increased to a very healthy margin in 2017, while this time around, the NEC have taken a steaming dump on the local party.

Basically, feel free to put Enfield North back in play, if you haven't already.

I assume Thornberry and Abbot have been packed off into the same electoral liability containment zone as Jacob Rees-Mogg. Starmer's disappearance seems much more likely to be his own choice.

He's in a weird position of being loyal enough to Corbyn that leftists don't hate him but also all the centrists loving love him.

Is... is this the Independent's "endorsement"

quote:

How you vote is your choice, but we sympathise with those who will pick a party in an effort to deny Boris Johnson a majority

...

What, then, is the alternative to this blind Brexit? If sufficient numbers vote tactically, it is still possible that Mr Johnson wins the most seats but fails to secure a majority of MPs. A hung parliament would certainly be unpredictable. Could his government last? Would Mr Corbyn be able to seize his chance?

When the two main parties have become so extreme, a minority government – held in check by the need to seek support – is no bad option. Labour’s economic policies, for instance, could be tempered by the Liberal Democrats, whose manifesto promises both to do more for the poor and to be more fiscally responsible. Would Mr Corbyn end up in No 10? Possibly, but we can be sure that his full economic agenda could not get through parliament.

...

Only one party slogan will live long in the memory: “Get Brexit Done” is the most blatant untruth in an election that has changed the game. The Brexit deadline of 31 January would be followed by the end of the transition period, scheduled to be 31 December. The 11 months in between will be dominated by Brexit, and another countdown to another self-inflicted moment of crisis.

Those who do not want to see this happen should cast their vote accordingly, taking into account the tactical situation in their constituency. Should Mr Johnson win his majority, it would be a victory for a misleading slogan, for untruth on Brexit, and for populism.

this is a closer alignment to israel, where 'israeli' isn't an internally valid nationality, because that would blur the edge between 'jewish' and 'israeli' in a way that might validate the existence of palestinians

there have been a couple of court cases about it, e.g.

https://www.timesofisrael.com/supreme-court-rejects-israeli-nationality-status/

quote:

AP — Israel’s population registry lists a slew of “nationalities” and ethnicities, among them Jew, Arab, Druse and more. But one word is conspicuously absent from the list: Israeli.

Residents cannot identify themselves as Israelis in the national registry because the move could have far-reaching consequences for the country’s Jewish character, the Israeli Supreme Court wrote in documents obtained Thursday.
