TheDeadlyShoe posted:i am not sure about the + versions, but hasn't the purpose of MLs in battletech to always be way OP for tonnage to provide a damage baseline and make the game about heat? If BattleTech was a modern game designed with things like 'balance' and the like in mind, this might be correct, but it wasn't. The closest thing tabletop BattleTech has to a 'baseline' weapon is the Autocannon/5. Balance was absolutely not a consideration in the late 1980s, trying to replicate the fight scenes from Fang of the Sun Dougram, Votoms, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, and Macross was the goal.

Huh. Mechwarrior 5 seems to be getting suprisingly good reviews. Pc Gamer gave it 80 and Rock Paper Shotgun seems to really like it.

I'm digging it really hard. It's kind of sloppy and low-budget in a lot of places. But the actual gameplay is just what I wanted/needed.

Listening to someone talk about the game, it sounds like it's a really advanced version of Mechwarrior on SNES. That's not bad... maybe. It wants to lean on the the mercenary company part of the game but I need to actually see people's reviews because I can't trust PGI to actually build that kind of stuff after MWO.

The negotiation mechanics are basically an evolved and improved version of what HBS did and I hope the inevitable Battletech 2 has Mechwarrior 5's negotation system (or an improved version of it). Similarily, pilots having weapon type specializations is good and helps differentiate pilots a bit.

Well, I mean, people were gonna boat. The one review I watched basically came down as "Meh." So better than expected, at least.

Since this is battletech, wouldn't proper 'weapon specializations' be inline with classic 3025 philosophies such as 'medium range brackets' and 'versatility, so carrying one of each type?' I want to say the real only boating I've seen before the clans came along was with -heavy- guns. PPcs, big lrms, that sorta thing.

There's no extra hardpoints like MWO/HBS Battletech - if your mech doesn't have a weapon in a certain place in its stock loadout, there is no hardpoint. And the hardpoints have a maximum size determined by the original weapon - a slot that holds a medium laser originally can mount a smaller or equally sized weapon, but could not mount a large laser or PPC.

I sort of agree with ac/20 and gauss limitations. But I really don't like limiting mediums lasers, they should be considered small and large lasers considered medium.

I know its for mechanics/economic reasons but the repair costs and times for just fixing the armor are a little nuts. In the grog-tier tabletop rules this is the poo poo you give your newbie mechtechs to do to keep them out of trouble and they can re-armor a mech over the course of a day. Which just leads me to the conclusion that Fahad is not kidding about being overworked because he's the only mechanic in the company.

Trip report on the Banshee 3S: it's a slow as treacle variant on what is traditionally a mobile assault mech, but Jesus gently caress can that thing mount some guns. I slapped a UAC/20 and a bunch of Lasers on it and cored an almost intact Black Knight with one salvo.

First wave was straight forward, Marauder anda couple of lights but then the re-enforcements were a Banshee BNC-3E and an Atlas 2 whittled them down till they were both hanging on by a thread when the Base Defence timer ran out went to mission successful, NO Atlas SALVAGE, 1 more turn and he'd have been dead.

The game has some pretty major issues that don’t really start showing till you are a few hours in. The first is Procgen just shits turrets all over every map, I remember going to the extraction point on a planet that was kind of a dead end hellhole and turrets for miles. The second is enemies spawn out of the ether. Doing a defense mission I kept noticing tanks and mechs were literally on top of me in seconds then I had the pleasure of watching a commando literally Star Trek materialize in front of me. This poo poo is bonkers considering they have actual drop ship assets. The salvage game really sucks early on, you can forget salvaging a mech till a faction likes you. Also bug stomping loses its fun fairly early on. I’d like to fight robots in this here robot jox reboot, not endless waves of helicopters and tanks.
