Mathematically, Great Weapon Fighting is one of the weakest fighting styles; on a 1d4, it turns your average of 2.5 per d4 into a 2.875 [(2.5 + 2 + 3 + 4)/4], which translates to about one extra pount of damage every time you roll 3d4. Like I said, it's not really a compelling choice.

If your one and only goal is to improve your hitting power, I still think there a lot of better choices out there. Wizard gets you the Blade cantrips, for one, which are conditionally better than Extra Attack for now and pull ahead outright later on. Or you can just hold course with Artificer and get better spells to enhance your skills and combat that much more. I guess Paladin also offers a really direct route for converting spells into damage, but that's not really a compelling choice to me.

I'd say the two hard rules are

1. Your character must have an in-character motivation to bite the plot hooks the DM prepared.
2. Your character must have some amount of camaraderie (if not friendship) with the rest of the party. If you're going to betray the party it should be once at a dramatic moment discussed with the DM, not session after session of low-key dickstabbing.

From there whether the PCs signed up for the saving the town or the socially sanctioned murder is an RP thing

Yes, the point was that as long as each character is on board with killing (and taking the stuff of) the same people, it doesn't really matter why.

As far as I'm concerned in 5E, almost everyone is going to do acceptable to good damage in combat if they pick the efficient powers/weapons/etc for their classes. It's variety, adaptability, and noncombat parts of the game that the lovely classes fall behind in, and Rogue is better than most.

-Extra skill picks and an extra tool proficiency aren't nothing. Especially if you go on a skill-heavy race like Half-elf or Kenku (but plenty of other races provide a lot of versatility and a skill or two), you can start with 8 trained skills, which is probably going to be every skill in two attributes. Expertise also makes at least two of those skills really powerful. In a 4-person party, you can easily have the amount of "skill spotlight" as the rest of the party combined.

-Ability score flexibility. Dex is already one of the best main ability scores and it does everything your class needs. So you can pick basically any other ability score purely for skill synergy, have a good Con, and not have to sacrifice anything.

-Cunning action is just cool. Getting to do a real action as a bonus action, and not needing that bonus action to contribute to damage, gives you more time to showboat and pull off the cool stuff that makes you feel heroic.

Concepts like "law" and "chaos" are just prototypical faction systems, it makes perfect sense if you assume the world is ruled by basically one ruling class or kingdom. They stop making sense when you assume a diverse world with many rulers and cultures.

My other two party members are a frog man arcane archer, and a swashbuckler of that blue skinned aquatic race

I usually always stay straight class unless the concept was initially created that way. I swear I have a good idea for a Druid/Ranger that I’m going to use someday. The Rogue cross classing idea came about because I thought about using my steel defender to flank enemies. I should probably just stick with the artificer, so I can get the higher level stuff sooner than later.

I think these next couple levels are just kind of dead and making me feel antsy.

Ok. Making an adventure where a cast out wizard plots revenge. He has experiments where he uses a magical item to combine animals. In my world he creates the first Owlbears, Leopasser, Half moles/wolves. I thought maybe he made one creature that escaped that I want for a water fight they have on a raft or something. Something that can float on water such as a frog. But I wonder what I should combine it with to make it an interesting fight. I though the frog can try to grab one of the players with its tongue.

Half frog to catch prey, half crab to hold and defend it.

Or have a gigantic snail filled with gigantic, horrifying parasitic worms that pop out and lurch at the players if they get too close. There's also a huge range of horrific marine invertebrates to choose from.

Solid! I also though the wizard might cross a mosquito with something. They betray and kill him and the players might have to root them out or they might grow and attack the village. So the players might find out that a crazy wizard got cast out for doing these experiments and they might see weird animals about and seemingly aggressive moles stealing jewelry (already exploiting their greed for this railroad). Then they have to cross a pond to find the lair, defeat Frog/Goat hybrid (Can drag or push them off the raft). It is aggressive, but with speak to animals can be talked out of combat and give information.

This just makes me think of a centipede hyrbid. A million little tiny wings and a million little needle suckers on its underside. You could have them grow bigger the more blood they suck until they're roughly humanoid size and can grapple players.

Hit them with the flying snake things. Anaconda with wings.

Or a Froctopus, and have him be able to swallow two people at once.

Maybe have them rescue a friendly flying hippo.

What is crazy wizard's motivation here? Does he just like making weird hybrids for shits and giggles, or does he have an ultimate goal? Does he want to make the strongest monster ever, or does he intend to eventually cross with humans to make some sort of ubermensch? If there is some sort of direction for this, the early enemies could be the failures, where the mixes look super mutated and wrong and become more advanced and effective as time goes on. End game could be extremely effective and dangerous monsters with the wizard himself having turned into a crazy powerful chimera.

Ok, wait, is the problem with an experimental frog/hippo hybrid that the idea of this magical monstrosity floating is unrealistic?!

It's an unnatural abomination! It walks on the floor, and then bloats itself to rise so rapidly that it breaches like a whale trying to win the gold at the Aquatic Olympics! Rocket that beast and give it flyby attack!

Edit: or it's just half frog and jumps off the ground, I just like the idea of the frippo/hrog suddenly and menacingly inflating.

I need some inspiration for a backstory/background for a new character/campaign.

I rolled up a 6th level half-elf sorcerer w/ draconic bloodline (gold) subclass.

The campaign is a home brew where we're trying to stop a group of cultists from joining the limbs of an ancient dragon god and it's almost completely a dungeon crawl.

I'm really just trying to pick a background that gives me arcana and a backstory that makes sense for the crawl even if it's a little generic. this group isn't going to be too hardcore on the roleplaying but having some idea of motivations would be great and I'm never great at this type of thing.

RAW you can make up your own background, which would include saying “I’m the X background except I want these skills/proficiencies instead of those other ones.”
It only gets complicated or up to DM permission (more than any other standard thing) if you want a unique background perk.
