Things you can do this weekend
- Go for a walk. Get out of the house. Avoid political news as its just gloating poo poo
- Eat something nice. Eat something.
- Don't engage with Tory cunts or other trolls. Your energy is better spent with other comrades or those that are hurting
- Give yourself some time off, especially if you've been canvassing. It's okay to binge on games or shows, have a few drinks, give yourself a break

The answer is the bitter pill - despite the origins being from working class unions the simple fact is politically these parties are all instead the parties of cosmopolitan middle class liberals and trying to deny that and be both cosmopolitan politics while also trying to court the working class is never going to work against straight populism in the depressed working areas.

The Democrats don't actually ever say that, the Democrats want nothing more than to only be the party of cosmopolitan middle class liberals, because cosmopolitan middle class liberals only ask for things that don't jeopardize the democrat's future invitations to all the billionaire's parties. The Democrats' problem is that cosmopolitan middle class liberals isn't actually enough to win them elections and also half the cosmopolitan middle class liberals are just going to vote republican anyway because TAX CUTS.

Seems the only reason 2017 happened was that leavers could vote labour without it threatening their precious brexit; a second referendum for them is just too risky.

Well now we've had one. It's clear that brexit wasn't just some stupid fluke the first time. It really is, and I hate to say it, THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE(tm). *vomits*

The result loving sucks, and there will be some tough times in the next few years but I'm not going to despair. Once the Tories push Brexit through and continue on their path I can't imagine the country improving and the blame will rest on them. They can't use anyone else as an excuse now that they have a majority.

Saying that though my gf is an EU citizen and I have no idea what to tell her to reassure her now, it sucks.

Yes, and anyone that expresses doubts was given poo poo for it.

Appeals to the better nature of the low information, low education ‘working classes’ isn’t going to work, because it seems that the anti-immigrant nationalism of the right will always have a stronger draw for them. Look at where Labour has done well - it’s not necessarily just the youth, but educated youth. I really think the divide in politics can’t be conceptualised in ‘class’ terms per se, but nationalist v transnationalist/closed v open societies. By trying to play to both crowds on the advice of people like Lavery and McCluskey, they lost one group and demoralised the other. Talking about agency workers, the Immigration Bill debacle and hedging made a lot of people with EU citizen friends and relatives very uneasy and upset, but wasn’t a big enough ‘gently caress you’ to immigrants to keep what we have to accept is a really loving racist base.

if you're not already predisposed to be sympathetic, Corbyn's manner rubs many people the wrong way - less sainted veteran and more used-car salesman - look at his polling on trustworthiness, he polls about the same or worse than Johnson and was reliably worse than T. May. There's a conviction ITT that Corbyn automatically comes off well, but there's no reason to think this is the case outside of those already chanting Oh J. C.

this isn't an automatic disqualifier on electability - see B, Johnson - but it puts a dent in something which was supposed to be a unique selling point...

Corbyn did have a bad hand to play: if you put a veteran of the 1970s GLC period up there, you can't expect him to triangulate hard on Europe or crime or bins and still maintain the same credibility. The mythic image of an courageous honest talker from before the era of spin doctors and messaging men (i.e., the internal party image) is hard to sustain with ever-changing transparently-engineered message on Brexit or policing or schools.

And it was continual fog on flagship issues, not least of which unilaterally changing his position on Brexit twenty days before the general election, in order to boldly stake out... neutrality. Either this man was insincerely lying to you previously, is lying to you now, or just changes his mind on a dime on issues of national importance, and none of those are good options. I know, I know, for those who pay attention the evolution has its reasons and its context and we can talk about Harold Wilson and the 1975 precedent and what have you, but does all that really work at a general election? I doubt so... ultimately voters saw someone replying evasively on ITV, being rounded by the media for doing so, and then going bravely neutral on BBC in response. You know, politics.

The question is how will you win them - you cannot simultaneously hold progressive social positions of the cosmopolitan educated middle class while simultaneously courting the isolationist xenophobic uneducated rural working class. What is your party going to aim for and believe when its stuck in trying to appease two hroups that are so diametrically opposed? The party of immigrants relying on voters who see them as invaders.
