Nah this is a combination of Corbyn having 4 years in the media being monstered and caving for a second referendum instead of a soft brexit. The labour civil war didn't help with either of those

There also appears to have been a huge amount of this poo poo going on where extremely low information voters have seen just how poo poo austerity has made things and labour are getting the blame because the MP/council was labour

while I would like to think this would “clear out the dead wood”, in reality when people find nothing else changes they will either disengage or latch onto the next nationalist talking point (e.g cod wars 2.0?)

capitalism has melted the social bonds which a socialist left relies on

Yeah it's not really a referendum on policy at all; the election loss was entirely because Corbyn couldn't get the party together and labour bring so split on brexit. Iirc his last policy paper thing was extremely popular with the party, he just doesn't have the skill to bring the party together, and I honestly don't know if anyone could have.

now that brexit is done and settled it'll be easier. the right are going to try and wrest control back but they'll be unable to and they'll have lost what little legitimacy they have if they try and civil war within the party again

Something people were saying a year or so ago but hadn't come up recently was how Labour under Corbyn hadn't really made an effort to sort out lovely Labour councils, which to be fair there was always so much poo poo to sort out that you can't really blame the Corbyn leadership for not managing it

Looks to have tremendously bitten Labour in the rear end though since people in historically Labour seats with Labour councils associate things being so poo poo for so long with local government, despite 9 years of Tory government rule

Boris managing to position himself as the candidate of change (via tremendous help from the media) is the real coup in all of this

Corbyn had the classic problem of assuming the electorate understands what Brexit will do to them while also assuming they even cared if it meant less brown people.

It seems to me that Labour was pretty evenly split between remain and leave and so Labour was essentially hosed considering how divided people are on remain and leave. Like there was really no way to make a coherent argument that wouldn't alienate half of Labour.

Am I understanding this correctly?

Because I keep seeing people making the argument that this is a bad sign because Corbyn was so far left and it means that the left can't win against Trump (yes it's a dumb argument).

But the centrists also lost and what possible centrist argument that could be made that would have not resulted in Labour losing? I think in the situation Labour faced you try to thread the needle on Brexit and then try to get the people who want the stuff on the left (like tuition free college) to come out and vote to make up for the votes you're going to lose by not being more strongly pro-Brexit.
