I still have my old hard drive with all my old MP3s on it tucked away somewhere. I've been meaning to get a backup of it Just In Case but haven't yet been arsed to. There are a few bands that don't have their full catalogue on Spotify and most of them are on youtube, why bother? There are some old Finnish underground rap albums and Balkan synthpop from the 1980s that I carry around on a memory stick but that's the extent of music I don't stream.

:same:

I transferred it all to a thumb drive a few years back, and my roommate managed to misplace it somehow.

I remember trying to get into Foobar2000 because nerds kept recommending it over WinAmp because it had more features and such. I tried it for a while, it was more hassle and just looked and felt so... nerdy and uncool. Switched back to WinAmp and never looked back, smell ya later nerds :coolfish:

I think it's been a good ten years since I listened regularly to mp3s, drat.
I only spent the necessary time configuring Foobar2000 to learn to love it because I had as aforementioned abandoned WinAmp out of bitterness over the registration fee doing nothing. At this point I just have album covers displaying on my second monitor when playing tracks and otherwise barely see the interface, which I think is as good a look for it as anything.

But at some point the money involved meant that commercial releases were going to be prioritized on all the services people actually use, to the point that overall it is probably harder for me to hear music of the type in my own digital collection in 2019, using popular sources, than it was in 2002. But I am also a Demoscene child whose newest genre of interest is Future Funk; not exactly a big use-case consideration for the big music companies.

My guess is music streaming is so good because Apple became a monopoly, but they not for one second were trying to make money selling music: the music was an excuse to sell iPods. Their size meant no record company could afford not to be on iTunes and no record company could beat Apple.

When Spotify became big enough to matter, they got sweetheart deals from the record companies in an effort to weaken Apple. As JayZ was trying to make the same shitshow out of music as has happened with video, he was luckily ignored.

By the time Amazon and Google tried to set up their own music stores (or streaming services? don't even know what they do), Apple and Spotify had split the market between them, with Apple still not trying to make money and having an infinite supply of money to spend, and Spotify burning thru VC money and surviving as proxy for the record companies that would really like to avoid Apple completely eliminating them.

I have Spotify for free due to family plan fuckery. There’s a few rare/deep cuts it doesn’t have, but I do keep the MP3’s for those, which is maybe 20 or so files.

Back to the relics, I had a car CD player back in the day that could read MP3’s on CDFS. That was huge because you could for way more MP3’s than raw CD audio, like 12 tracks vs. 75. That kept me from having a big binder like most people. I didn’t have an iPod until like 2 years before I got an iPhone, so it was nice. I just used my PC and car for MP3’s since I didn’t walk a whole lot then anyway.

I think what pushed me towards streaming was:

#1 - My only phone is a company provided one, and we have a massive data allotment to the point we don't really have to care how much we use. (and I'm responsible for phones at work, so I get to see the usage).
#2 - I basically only listen to music in my car these days. Rarely at home.
#3 - Because of #1 and #2, It is just easier to using a streaming service rather then gently caress around with shuffling music files back and forth on a USB stick.

I also find myself listening to podcasts more and more these days. Whereas in my younger days I used to be a huge music nerd, listening to it all the time. (GET OFF MY LAWN!)

snap!

I used to get Spotify free with my phone plan, though that changed when I changed provider, but honestly it's *maybe* once a month I listen to commercial music, as opposed, like, this minute where I have the Jazz Jackrabbit 2 soundtrack on in the background and for that I can just use Youtube like I do for the rest of my "I have a well known song stuck in my head" stuff.

I can only listen to podcasts when I'm doing something that doesn't require much thought, like dishes or cooking or walking the dog. If I have a podcast on while working, I quickly realize I've tuned it out and missed the last 10 minutes entirely.

Reminds me of when that was the next big thing.

And then the record companies tried to do some per-stream fee/license and it killed the scene dead.

A page back, but beats.io will do this for you now, using the same DB that WinAmp used.

This one isn't that old but was weirdly obscure: did anyone else ever text searches to Google?

My brother, who is not a techie, actually introduced me to that, and it was surprisingly handy. Being able to send an SMS with a basic question was fast and easy, and I had no idea they had the service - it never seemed to be promoted. Pretty sure they stopped doing search-by-text a while back.

I was texting 46645 (GOOGL) for internet searches right up until I got a smartphone in 2012. I think they shut it down shortly after.

Is that a standard RS-232 serial port? If so, then LOL at the transfer speeds. I know a machine like that would have USB, so WTF even is the point.

If anyone tried to sell a machine with a DB-9 port naked on the front today the reviewers would never ever shut up about it.

I recognize the model. It predates USB2.0, and the ubiquity of USB in attached devices, by several years. Serial transfer was fairly widely supported for a while in the early 2000's by cheap digicams

Indeed the gigantic 3000x3000 picture of this serial port would have taken several minutes to transfer via that same port.

I keep a box of computer cords, which includes a good bit of outdated technology. Was looking for something last night and stumbled upon a massive serial connector cable. It's completely useless but I remember I paid about $25 for that back in the pre-usb day to very slowly transfer files from one computer to another.

It's been said in this thread many times but RS-232 is still alive and well in all sorts of industrial, medical and scientific applications because it's simple and it works (and because the equipment that uses it was so expensive back in the day that you use it until it breaks). Many goons (myself included) will work with equipment that uses RS-232 on a daily basis.

Sure, you don't see serial ports anymore on consumer-grade hardware but it'll still be supported by your computer's motherboard.

My Haswell-era Dell Precision workstation has serial ports of every variety, and even an honest-to-god PCI slot, the regular one, not Express.

I started using Bluetooth heaphones a few years ago and wouldn't trade them for anything at this point. Not having wires or constraints on my movement is just too good. After a few pairs to serve as a proof of concept I got a pair of JBL Everests and they sound better than any wired headphones I've owned in a very long time. I had a fancy pair of Sony's years ago that sounded as good, but that's about it.

I keep all my mp3s around as I'm just really skeptical of streaming in the long term given what happened to video streaming. Netflix was great up until every show I liked was replaced with Brazilian direct to video when every channel took their content to separate streaming services. Even if music streaming is less likely to balkanize the same way I'd rather not get invested in it just in case. Instead I just fill up a couple massive USB sticks for the car and rotate them out occasionally. Video streaming can gently caress right off.
