In Denmark basically all dental care is entirely on you after you're... I believe it's 16 or 18. As a kid your dental stuff is free.

But entirely agreed, both should be socialized.

EDIT: Also I've had a dentist attempt to sell me on one of their laughable dental insurances before. It would basically be worthless unless I planned to have my wisdom teeth ripped out of my skull once a year every year, just in terms of prices and how much I'd be paying for the insurance, without even getting into any of the more detailed stuff.

Owning a castle sounds awesome. You guys are a bunch of wet blankets.

If they can keep the dream going for a couple of years they’d probably break even on the investment because everything will go to poo poo at some point. Still, a couple of years of pain for a lifetime of, “I owned a castle” stories is worth it.

Would defaulting on a mortgage in France follow you back to the States?

Not really, here's the issue with financed cars and repos.

You owe 23k on a vehicle and you decide to not pay for whatever reason, you may even be able to call teh bank and say "Take it away"The car is reposessed and now your 23k has repo charges.. lets call it 2k.. (no clue if that's what they are) so now you owe 25k

Repo company holds it for x days depending on state requirement to let you get back up on payment.(you get to pay storage fees for 45-100 a day)

Now you owe 27-30k for the vehicle.

You haven't paid so the car goes to the auction, in this case it's worth jack poo poo so it goes for 1000 maybe..

You're still on the hook for 29k and the bank will come after you for it.

The trick to castles is to get them as fee tail rights instead of fee simple rights. With fee tail you own it in the sense that you can borrow against it, but it can only be taken away during your life, then it goes to the heirs according to your succession laws upon your passing.

It’s the Patek Phillipe ad of “you never really own a castle, you just preserve the BWM for the next generation.”

Also castles were always money pits, it was extracting rent from your tenant farmers on the lands surrounding the castle that was how aristocrats could afford anything.

As someone who has never had this issue. What realistically happens if she just never ever pays it off? Ok the bank comes after her, if she just continues to ignore letters and calls from the bank, what happens next? Do they send it off to a collections agency, who she then continues to ignore forever? I understand her credit would practically be a negative number, but if she doesn't care about that, would it ever go away?

She'll eventually be sued over the amount she's defaulted on, will get a judgment against her simply because she fails to show up to the court date, and ultimately will have wages garnished.

This debt collections talk reminds me of the thread in BFC on how a guy made money from letting a bill go into collections because the debt collectors harassed him so his lawyer was able to sue for damages and get the debt wiped.

As others said, they'll sue her and get a judgement they can then use to garnish her wages. But they'll also do that to her dad, who ostensibly has more to lose. Depending on the state, they may be able to seize vehicles or put a lien on his house if they get a judgement against him.

Also I didn't check the Reddit page, but I'm almost sure that particular French castle is not really the stone fortification castle like some of you might be picturing, and it's more likely that it's a chateau instead.

My point is that it's still really bad with money, and it's probably not as fortified against being repossessed.
