Sweet. Tree tubes are great if the plants are small enough. They grow taller faster, grow straight, and are protected from pests. And they stay warmer.

I'm not sure if you'll be able to watch this in Oz, but if you can.... this is somewhat relevant. It's about one of the major fires in California. So many failures at every level, from the firefighters that initially spotted it to the local government. It's amazing more people didn't die in that. If you can't view the video, this sums it up a bit.

A nurse at the local hospital kept going back and forth driving patients out of the hospital; Toyota replaced his heat-damaged truck for free. I'm sure Toyota did it as a calculated PR move, knowing they'd make back the money they spent on the truck many times over, but it's still an incredibly nice gesture. Also a bit of a testament to how tough their trucks are - he literally drove it through fire, all of the exterior plastic melted, and it kept going. I'd assume the plastic/aluminum radiator probably melted at some point, but I haven't found any articles that go into specifics about the damages the truck suffered beyond cosmetic.

Thanks for that. A very good documentary about Paradise. So angry and sad watching it. The footage of the township after the fires is astonishing.

Hahahahaha this is so loving typical of the luck of my workplace.

Our major gum plantation that we use to feed the koalas managed to survive the initial fire on friday under catastrophic conditions, managed to make it through the wind changes unscathed yesterday....

And got torched by the fire service in a back burn operation today.

So tomorrow is going to be hilaaaaarious fun working out how we're going to work around that loss

Well don't you know I'm caught in a trap?

I remember reading awhile back that mature eucalyptus leaves bark droppings that burn with an insane intensity, is that true in your plantations? What kind of effect does this have on your koala population? If the population is intact, can you import eucalyptus from other parts of Australia or from California?

I'm just generally curious.

E: also wish I could mail a few hundred thousands of gallons of water to you all, with the torrential rains in the PNW the small seasonal stream running through my backyard has grown to a significant sized stream, several of the springs that feed it are gushing water almost a foot into the air, it's so much water the 12" culvert that it drains to can't take the volume, and I have a sizable pond at the end of the gorge my house overlooks. Fortunately the ground under the house seems well drained and stable for now, and the rain's abating, so it looks like I don't have to worry about this stupid piece of poo poo getting mudslided into the gorge. Not that that'd be a bad thing, if the animals could somehow survive it.

Yeah... They're only slightly flammable...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iaxc2RuRnCQ

And yep, its the same case in my plantations, except because we prune the trees, theres a lot more debris on the ground from the harvest activities and we often have a lot more grass growth under the plantations too due to the increased light from the more open canopies. Doesnt have to be dry and dead leaves either- get a gum tree hot enough and the oils in the green leaves will explode when they get hit by flame.

As for the koala populations? Well.. if the wild ones are in the path of the fire, theyre hosed. A koala can move around 800m at a time across the ground before fatigue sets in and they need to rest, and fires will easily do that without blinking. If its a low intensity fire thats on the ground, they can survive that by going up, but if it gets into the crown they're stuffed.

Unfortunately we cant just bring in food for them- They rely on very specialist gut flora to be able to digest what is are essentially trees totally devoid of any nutritional value, but its that specialised that its down to the varieties of trees and their localisation. Its been tried sending koalas up to the East Coast from the Adelaide Hills and they just cant digest the trees up there and die. For out koala population in captivity, we're going to have to source gum leaves from local sources to keep em going- and this big plantation might be offline for 5-10 years before its recovered.

Its certainly made my Monday tomorrow a whooooole lot more stressful.

Whats doing my head in this time is that the fires are being MORE destructive on their second pass, eg Balmoral. First time on Thursday it rolled through then turned around on Saturday, turned into a firestorm and destroyed everything left. Logically you would think most everything that can burn is done so you wouldnt fear the fire again but noooope.

Ive seen the same piece of bush burn twice a few times now, First time, you'll get a low intensity fire under low winds burn through the understorey and clear that out. What that does tho is scorches the canopy and dries it out. Then you get a day with hellish winds and that pushes a fire up into the canopy and next thing you know your pre-dried canopy is being consumed by a crown fire that roars through it.

And yes, koalas SUCK to keep alive, theyre even worse when they're in captivity and become fussy bout what they eat!

Dad only reconnected with her a few years ago so we're very lucky for the time we got to know her. She came to my wedding and spent some time here during dad's recovery from heart surgery.

Some good news? My daughter has now been accepted to 4 of her top 6 colleges, and #2 and #4 have offered her 100% full ride scholarships, so those have now become #1 and #2. They're private, the awards from each amount to a value of over $200,000. Soooooooo, I don't have to pay for my daughter's college, or watch her suffer with a decade of loans. She will have to pay room and board, and I promised her as a reward for her kicking so much rear end in school that she will graduate 100% debt free, even if that means I pay her rent and food and poo poo.

And between last post and now she just got notice that she got in to #2 school with half tuition covered, no word on grants yet. So of her top 6 schools, she got in to 5, with two offering half scholarships, and two offering full, with no word from the last one. It's a great situation to be in.

Ironically it's still her #1 choice school that is making her wait till April to tell her if she got in. But it's a really tough school and the more we learn it's probably not as good a fit for her as she thinks. She's not a hard driving competitor, and we're hearing it's very competitive, even after you get in, with a low graduation rate. I'm hoping she picks one that actually wanted her from the beginning.

I hope all you other dads get to feel pride like this, I love her so much.

WUT.
I got into my first choice college right out of high school, then I proceeded to get kicked out of there because I had no study skills or drive to be there; I was just going through the motions because it was expected of me.

Wasn't until several years later, after spinning my wheels at a local JC for awhile, that I actually found my own motivation and started doing school for myself.

For what it's worth, I'd agree with you that prestige isn't all that it's cracked up to be, especially for undergrad. A prestigious top tier research university everyone's heard of probably doesn't have the time or motivation to give much attention to a freshman calculus class or whatever.

I ended up at a less prestigious state university after everything shook out, but I had plenty of one-on-one time with professors that I wouldn't have gotten at a research university.

Sounds like your daughter is smarter and more driven than I was at that age, though, so she'll probably be fine! I'm sure you have considered all these things anyhow.

There's definitely an air of realism with gen z unprecedented in our time. Her mom graduated in 1994 with $21k debt and I graduated in 99 with $30k in debt. Then her mom went back for a masters and graduated in 01 with $50k in additional debt. We divorced in 04 so I don't know after that - I paid mine off by 05, her mom is in default I'm sure. (engineering vs humanities, sadly)

There was definitely a vibe of "if you don't get scholarships you are not going to college" througout her childhood. It's sad and inspiring at the same time. She's not super incredible, she has a strong vein of anxiety and inadequacy in her life, yet she's excelling academically. It's heartbreaking and pride-inducing all at once. The county park down the street from me has this kind of thing going on, and I wanted to do a nice date night the other night so we bought a ticket for that and wanted to go out to dinner afterwards. We got there right when the show "opens" at 5:00, and had to wait in line for over an hour. When you pull up to the ticket booth there's signs to turn off all of your lights, and drive slowly but to keep moving and don't stop. Of course not an eight of a mile into the thing I get stuck behind an SUV that's not only rolling forward ten feet, stopping to take pictures or some poo poo probably, rinsing and repeating, but they're slowly drifting side to side between stops so I can't get past them. And obviously every time they stop every four seconds, their brake lights are lighting up like the sun and washing out all of the Christmas lights we paid $25 to see. Finally I manage to squeeze past them and shoot a dirty look at them, and quickly catch up to ANOTHER SUV doing the same drat poo poo, except this time the park roads narrow significantly because it starts to wind through an area that's really meant for foot traffic in its regular use, so I'm stuck behind these fuckers for the entirety of the rest of the loop. Went to a nice Italian restaurant that I haven't been to since I was a kid afterwards though and the pizza was even better than I remembered though.

Now I'm about as white privileged as it gets, and when I start feeling like there's suppression going on, there must be something SERIOUSLY going on.

So I've tried two times to get the new Real ID. The first time I didn't have something, I don't remember. The second time I went to the BMV with my birth certificate, passport, multiple bills in my name/address, current driver's license, and a current auto title and registration. Everything is identical, name/address/etc. But I DIDN'T have a Social Security Card or W2, so I was boned. I'll try again later on this year.

My wife went to get hers today. She had her birth certificate, passport, social security card, current driver's license, 2 bills in her name/address. Should be enough now, right? Nope. She also needed "proof of legal name change" since her birth certificate was not in her married name. :wtc:

So I grabbed both our marriage license and marriage certificate and hopefully she's getting the card this try.

Now we have all of our identification documents in order and secured, so they're easy to access, but man, there are a LOT of people not so organized / lucky to have that setup. This is going to lead to a huge number of people unable to fly in the US starting in October of next year.

"Obviously" this is for our "security," but what's the real game here? What is the suppressive intent?
