How do envisage that working ? I've not seen a poll showing a majority in support of independence despite all the poo poo that has gone down recently

You need parliament to approve a referendum and it is in the Tories interest to campaign on preserving the union. Also. Being that they have no prob with the occupation of Northern Ireland. I would not put it past them on military occupation.

how much of the uks landmass is in Scotland? 20-30%? Saying your going to occupy it is one thing, actually doing it is iffy

ASK ME ABOUT LUMBER

unilateral declaration of independence would be a very risky move, i can't see the SNP going for it. they're very comfortable as things stand. maybe if a new, harder nationalist party starts coming at them in favour of unilateralism, but atm i think they've got that tendency pretty much sewn up

Spain has made it beyond clear they will block any separatist movement's state from joining the EU if they splinter from an EU member state.

After Jan 31 the Spain declaration no longer applies to Scotland.

Scotland joined the union in the first place because they went bankrupt after they tried to become a colonial empire by starting a colony in the most inhospitable jungle on the American continent. They are the only European country to have paid for the crimes of imperialism and they have suffered long enough.

... are you, like, brand new to the situation?

The entire EU situation is being rewritten to start with "First and foremost gently caress perfidious Albion". Spain wants a cudgel against Catalonia and them pretending to apply the same rules to everyone works in their favor if they insist their problem with Scottish independence was breaking up an EU nation. Siding with England is the last thing anyone somewhat sane wants to do, so Spain has positioned themselves so they can tell both England and Catalonia to gently caress off while looking like they're following a perfectly reasonable set of rules.

They haven't said they'll support Scotland mind, because they're keeping their options open.

On one hand fair enough (though that would apply to a number of other EU nations), but on the other, well, I don't think there was a sovereign nation of Scotland capable of forming their own foreign policy in 1707. Or since then, for that matter.

I'm sad looking at the Bernie threads because if he gets to be the Dem candidate then it's going to be even harder against him.

I'd say it's possible that some formats just pretend that an election isn't happening, or that Trump is running unopposed somehow.

speaking of such a hypothetical, not being an american I genuinely don't know what would happen if Trump decided he wanted to run for a third term (if he wins a second)

would the "uh, no, you're not allowed to" in the 22nd amendment have to go through both halves of congress? what's the actual mechanism to stop someone that the party unilaterally believes to be the second coming of christ to continue being president after two terms?

Trump wouldnt get past ballot access laws which are per state and all of which require fulfilling constitutional requirements such as natural born citizenship and XXII

comedyblissoption
Mar 15, 2006

also formally getting rid of presidential term limits would require a constitutional amendment, a process that requires 2/3 supermajority support in both houses and then ratification by 3/4 of the state legislatures

in the improbable hypothetical god emperor trump scenario, it's more like that there's an insane scotus ruling declaring a term limit amended into the constitution as unconstitutional or the legal documents are simply ignored

the founders wanted a strong executive, the term limits are an anomaly and could be done away with again. literally a 5-4 decision could do it. in 1995 congressional term limits were blocked (5-4 baby).
