That was fruit companies toppling democratically elected governments in order to have a more favorable business environment to grow fruits (and especially bananas) for maximum profit and minimum cost. Often using the US military to occupy and take over the country but also could involve funding rebel groups or just a whole lot of thugs to intimidate people, depends on the country and exact time period.

I mean plenty of places charge(d*) you for your uniforms. * - Of the 4 places I’ve worked that had a uniform to wear they’ve all deducted them from my check. Which REALLY fuckin sucked because it meant you didn’t get a full paycheck (or one at all) for like 2-3 weeks after starting. Maybe they don’t any more? It’s been almost 10 years since the last one.

Ah, my mistake. Wasn't sure where I remembered food gentrification from, and may have conflated it with a video on banana republics and how that came about.

Bananas are still way, way too cheap for an imported tropical fruit. I will continue to protest exploited workers by not buying them.

This has nothing to do with the fact that I think bananas are kind of nasty.

Fruit pickers don't exactly see the fruits of their labour here either. We just import the workers rather than the bananas. :smith:

All of the places I've worked in the last ten years if the uniform was restaurant-specific (i.e. a logo tee or specific button-up rather than a color) they'd "cover" the first and any extra were on the employee but usually not at an egregious price. Just inconvenient.

I've been lucky/picky, though.

To answer your first question no she hasn't, (because history is book lernin' and she was too busy pulling herself up by her bootstraps for any of that nonsense). And to answer your second question, yes, they do.

They like doing it with "exotic" food from foreign countries, as well, and suddenly people in a far-off place can't afford to eat because Blayken discovered some new superfood. I read about this fairly recently, it is literally called "food gentrification".

Uh, it has a name.
The case in my country was with avocados, just a certain species (it seems americans dont like the buttery sweet type). Out of sudden after being a staple fruit on every mexican family's table it became unaffordable. It's infurating, honestly.

the New Deal was meant to alleviate suffering enough to curtail popular support for socialism and enable the government to more effectively dismantle domestic movements. it was progressive out of perceived necessity but it was absolutely not socialist.

the new deal was pretty ineffective for fixing the american economy, and whatever socialist message it can be interpreted as having now was definitely not present at the time. in a modern context, many aspects of the new deal entrenched racism and social division (redlining) while other parts were highly progressive (fair pay standards and no racial discrimination in pay) so it's a bit of a mixed bag, and from an economic standpoint it may have stopped some bleeding but it didn't really reverse course on the crashing economy

if you really want to spin someone's top about socialism though, point out the massive government intervention and direct state control of production that was part of the wartime economy. the government cut big fat contracts to poo poo like typewriter companies to start making small arms instead. iirc in 1943, half of all GDP was under the direct control of the federal government, and it lead to massive prosperity immediately after the war due to pent up wages bursting out to buy new consumer goods. not to mention the huge government handout that was the GI Bill

yeah this. the new deal was not at all socialist, it was just aw shucks helping people out like good neighbors do, which is absolutely not at all in any way similar to communism you red menace, read your drat bible,

The standard response, which is the one she uses, is that World War 2 and not the New Deal brought us out of the depression. They don’t admit that World War 2 gave the government even more control of the economy.
