I think JJ just said, "gently caress it, throw a bazillion chases, lightsabres, and explosions at them and call it a day! Who cares if the story makes sense, I'm done!"

Just continuing how TLJ spent half the film backpedaling its own first half, the sequel trilogy makes a complete zigzag.

not sure if this got brought up in the thread previously but after coming out of the theater one of my friends mentioned "you know, they mentioned how the new empire has been going around the galaxy stealing children, presumably to crew up their death fleet... and they just all got blown the gently caress up." like this seems even darker than the "oh hey how many dudes were crewing the death star? how many of them were conscripts that never had a choice to be there?" notion

I liked ROS cuz its 2 and a half hours of big dumb adventure and explosions and lightsabers to turn your brain off to. I really liked the last scene too. Thought it was a nice close.

Atlas Hugged posted:The movies hinted from the very beginning that Finn was Force sensitive. They just never did anything meaningful with it, like his abandoning of the First Order. He should have spent Last Jedi getting First Order troopers to turn and then this movie turning them into proto Force warriors or something. Just go totally wuxia with it. Besides the fact that wielding a lightsaber requires strong Force ability, so I have no clue why Finn mysteriously holding his own against Kylo Ren with a goddamn lightsaber was quickly forgotten about. Like, that should have been his character arc. Such a missed opportunity. His whole character is.

The purpose of Finn is to be fake protagonist in TFA so that it’s an epic twist when the white woman turns out to be the real protagonist

Six-Of-Hearts posted:I liked ROS cuz its 2 and a half hours of big dumb adventure and explosions and lightsabers to turn your brain off to. Full agreement here, except I wouldn't call it "turning your brain off". Like, in order to get full enjoyment you have to be smart enough to know you're watching something dumb. And I don't even mean it in that mean-spirited "watching it ironically" fashion, but rather just being honest with yourself that sometimes the things you love are actually really corny if you try to be objective about it. The movie's corny in all the right ways in order to feel authentic. I also think the last scene feels like the 'correct' way to end it, and was probably the only leak that actually sounded good on paper. I'd have preferred if Abrams had played it more haunting/"poo poo is real" rather than lean in hard on the Disney-style heartwarmingness (I wouldn't have had the music come in until after Rey says her final line, for instance) but his approach is admittedly more on-brand.

The only criticisms i have for this big fun swashbuckling laser opera movie were: 1. Rey was better as a nobody. Not everyone has to be a secret descendant of space magic royalty. and 2. I personally would have preferred Skywalker be a replacement title for Jedi.

Looking back at the whole trilogy, I like that Rey never fully embraces The Hero's JourneyTM and hers is more one of self-discovery (Luke's was, too, but that wasn't his initial motivation). I don't think a woman has any need for the Hero's Journey; I've always felt it addressed specifically male insecurities. On that note, I also liked how we see that the Emperor uses sexism to color his approach for manipulating people: with Anakin and Luke it's all about how STRONG and POWERFUL the dark side will make them; with Rey he tries to appeal to her vanity - "Empress Palpatine!" If it were me I would have gone whole hog with it and just have him tell her "you'll be the most BEAUTIFUL and POPULAR person in the galaxy!" and promising riches and luxury but that's probably why I'm not a bigshot Hollywood director.

The Emperor's aesthetic was baller as gently caress with that whole 1930s horror movie lighting. That first real look at him kinda spooked me out but i guess that's what i get for going in high as a kite.

Sheev seduces Anakin with the promise of being able to save lives, not strength, which war hero Anakin has in spades. Just as Rey is already the most popular person in the galaxy.
