Dissociative disorders exist but they're mostly related to trauma. In particular childhood trauma of the really bad varieties tends to cause dissociation. It isn't limited to that, though. One of the roots is that children are basically totally reliant on adults, especially their parents. If a parent abuses a child badly enough they'll just mentally check out and disconnect from certain parts of their brain. If they do it enough it becomes a full-fledged disorder that can persist for life. It's probably memory-related as people tend to not remember the things that caused it. Things like depersonalization, derealization, and trauma bonding are also things that are related. The short of it is that it's a defense mechanism. If poo poo gets too real the brain can just kind of disconnect from the experience. It obviously still happened and the brain has probably encoded memories but it can also disconnect from those. Multiple personality disorder is controversial because there really isn't enough brain hardware there to have more than one, fully formed personality in a person's head let alone many. I think a few cases have been discredited as a person really just making it up. In real cases what's actually going on often is that there's only one personality but the fragmenting that the dissociation response ultimately is has resulted in different chunks turning on and off at different times. Since it's memory-related that can mean the person remembers different things depending on what chunks are on or off. There are suggestions that this is related to people who enter into fugue states. Since borderline disorder tends to be related to childhood trauma as well it tends to come along with PTSD and dissociative disorders. The kind of childhood that leads to borderline disorder is frequently not only abusive but not allowing the child to form their own identity or making them question it. Since the person the child is becoming is treated as wrong and bad they have to not be that which is damaging to core identity. On top of that neglect can also cause identity issues or childhood trauma as children will do basically anything to get their parents to take care of them. It's a survival mechanism if you look at it from a purely functional standpoint. Being rejected by your parents registers as a death threat because in a lot of ways it is. It can get you through childhood sure but it fucks you up in the long wrong. So you basically become somebody else to get your parents to take care of you which then becomes how you interact with the world Borderline disorder also has some controversy around it but is also a bitch and a half to treat. It's also commonly misdiagnosed; complex PTSD is an up and coming thing that looks like borderline disorder but is its own thing. In any event the fact that BPD almost always comes with PTSD, dissociation issues, and identity disturbances shows that there's a lot of relation between all of the various trauma responses.

Rest assured there’s furry themed writing of similar length. From the Lion King fandom subset alone there’s, for example, the ‘Chronicles Of The Pridelands’ saga which is about 1000 pages in the 3rd edition across four volumes, and probably more like 1500 across gently caress knows how many in the second. Many many years ago as a teenager I printed out the whole thing and got screamed at by my dad for using like three or four printer cartridges up.
