If playing Sekiro makes you enjoy this game less, I'm kinda glad I've never played Sekiro? Granted, it has nothing to do with the gameplay, I just have zero interest in mythical ancient Japan as a setting. Same reason I have no plans to play Nioh.

The big difference people coming to this will notice from Sekiro is that you can’t cancel out of an attack animation with a parry

Sekiro rules butt, and as I'm getting used to this game I find that being a Jedi always rules butt. It's a little rougher than similar games, but that also means that sometimes I Just Have To Go For It, which is often a very bad idea in a game like Sekiro.

From what I understand, the optimal way to beat Sekiro is to parry drat near everything. Rather than give you a chance to damage them, depleting an enemy's stamina in Sekiro basically lets you instantly kill them. With bosses, it lets you take off a full bar of health.

And how dare you accuse me of being racist, some of my favorite porn came from Japan.

"I... I did well, didn't I?"
I saw a video about tips for this game and one of them was about going to Dathomir first for the Dual blade. But it suggested just running past all of the enemies because 'There's just no way you can possibly beat them yet.' And I just want to say, that's absolutely not true. Admittedly I was only playing on the normal difficulty. But I was very able to handle Dathomir without it being overly difficult and it also gave me a ton of levels so I also had a leg up on the rest of the game. It's nowhere near impossible.

Yep to all this. I remember actually being bummed out at hitting the progression wall shortly after getting the double saber, because I was totally raring to go with that thing.

If nothing else, heading to Zeffo after honing your skills and getting the double saber at Dathomir makes you feel like a total badass. Dathomir made me turn the difficulty down to Jedi Master (might turn it up now that I know Dathomir is actually harder than Zeffo), but there's no reason to run past all the enemies.

"Ah," Ratz had said, at last, "the artiste."
This was an early gift that I beat this week! And it was...pretty good! Probably helps that I finished playing it after Ep IX so my standards for good Star Wars was at an incredible low but the story really worked well and did a good job blending design elements of the prequels and the original trilogy. And hey, they made Saw Gerrera a real character instead of a dumbass who gives a rambling speech and then dies five minutes later! Good job!

But as for the gameplay; even as someone who is all about playing dress-up the cosmetics are disappointing. I only found the second outfit before beating the game but was disappointed to see that the rest are also just basic recolors and they don't even let you rock the Imperial outfit even in the post-game :wtc:

They also should've made the saber customization...do something? Like a little attack/defense bonus or a set bonus for using every Magus part or something. I dunno, something worth seeking them out for. Also: more urban environments! The opening on the scrapper planet and the interior of that crashed Zeffo ship (the optional one you explore with the double-jump that I assume most people skipped because by then you probably don't care about getting a few more hilts and ponchos) have some of the best design aesthetic in the game.

It's not worth 60 in my opinion. It's a nice rental or discounted Star Wars Game.

Yes it's a fun Star Wars story with good writing, great Metroid Prime style level design and combat that varies from middling to great based on what kind of enemy you're fighting. Best Star Wars game since Academy.

MORT cancels dance: interrupted by MORT
It's fine game, if flawed, with a pretty good star wars story. It doesn't play as smoothly as, say, Sekiro, but it's still pretty much the best lightsaber combat has been in any game.

I hope the sequel lets you do stuff like canceling out of attacks into block/parry, that tripped me up quite a bit coming from Sekiro.

If you can wait for a sale that brings it to like $40 and below, do so. Solid Star Wars thematically with a fairly cliche'd plot and some not so great decisions but overall fun and engaging and worth mostly what I paid for.

Edit: Or just do the EA Origin subscription thing if you're on PC. Or skip if you have the basic consoles cause those are nonstop performance issues from what I keep hearing.

If you're on PC, you can buy a month of EA's subscription service (Origin Premier) and that'll let you play it for $15.

Edit: Beaten to this point, but it depends what you're looking for out of the game I guess. It's a mashup of Tomb Raider exploration/puzzles with Sekiro-lite combat. It's extremely Star Warsy (environment, story, music/sound) with a pretty predictable plot and fun characters. You can tell the game was rushed to get it out in time before the new movie and the gameplay suffers a bit for it, but it's not horrible. I love Sekiro and while the combat isn't as tight, it's fun in its own way when you take some time to figure out how it works instead of trying to mash a Sekiro mindset into it. It's definitely the best lightsaber combat game by far though.

The only chests that are worth it are lightsaber pieces and stims (the latter of which are a lot more common that you'd think)
I just wish there were more full outfit varieties rather than ponchos

Give me a game with FO's artstyle and weighted combat, coupled with Academy's sheer mod potential and you'd probably have one of the best Star Wars games of the decade

I don't think I'd have been angry if I'd bought it at $60, but I think I'd be perfectly happy at $40. Flawed but fun, the main thing holding it back is its longer term replayability - between the lack of interesting collectibles and the possibility of a sequel smoothing out the rough points, it's not one I'll likely go back to indefinitely.
