I've talked about it in other threads long ago but I dated a girl who made commissioned furry art and have been to a few conventions of varying sizes in the role of chaperone/support because she couldn't leave the artist's alley during business hours The takeaways are this: 1) furries are on the whole pretty chill in person 2) there is always an ongoing drop-in Smash game going, which is where I spent most of my time 3) there are definitely, absolutely predatory people there (and not just the Lions!!) but they are few and often known - people are largely good about pointing them out 4) they run the gamut from teenager to greybeard, and the oldest ones are by far the creepiest 5) I felt more comfortable there than I would have at any given ComicCon, although the ones I went to were mostly smaller venues and it was over a decade ago 6) watching the other guests in the hotel try to puzzle out what was happening was extremely funny The only people who really stood out to me in a bad way were a pair of twins who, aside from being male, would not have stood out as understudies for The Shining, and a guy who was apparently a professional Smash player who ruined the game for everyone else, would not drop out from playing, was rude as gently caress and smelled worse than anyone else I have ever encountered, and that includes all of the fursuit ravers. Although it is my understanding that that is par for the course among Smash players, less so than furries generally, this person just happened to overlap I've never really understood genuine hatred for furries since that experience because their bad apple sorts seem to be representative of the nerdish population in general - every shithead has his mirror in anime or video game or comics fandoms, he just spent his $900 on a fursuit instead of a costume of loving Dart from The Legend of Dragoon or whatever

Something I think people overlook re the Furred Reich is that plenty of communities don’t have Nazi factions. It is good that furries by and large kicked out the Nazis, but I have to ask: why were they ever welcome?
