Arglebargle III posted:No the Witcher 3 has a much more traditional structure than Witcher 2. In the Witcher 2 there is no good ending no matter which story branch you choose, since Geralt is swept up into larger political events and doesn't have the power to alter the outcome. Well I wouldn't say THAT, while the 'ending' won't necessarily change, you can affect certain outcomes, just like witcher 3. Off the top of my head there's making sure Saskia, Letho, and... Sheala survive? I think you can also lessen the bad outcome of the pogrom on the mages/non-humans. CJ posted:I don't really give a gently caress about Triss, but since the reason this show got made is the extremely popular videogames which have Triss as a prominent character, and "Triss or Yen?" is one of those divisive choices for the ages like "Coke or Pepsi?" or "Edward or Jacob?", i think it's odd that they didn't make her look like in the games. I don't get why they added her to the Striga story if they weren't making decisions based off the cultural impact of the games. Fair enough but it's really more like Coke vs RC Cola or Faygo, with Yen being Coke.

RC cola is the best dark cola though. I'm not counting root beer in this by the way.

Maaaybe, but it's also one of those plots like Raiders of the Lost Ark where arguably everything would have gone just as well without the main character's involvement. Upper Aedirn as a breakaway state was always doomed, you never managed to stop Letho, and interfering with Philippa's plan ended up more or less a wash. Yeah you can spare Saskia but you're also the one who managed to bring her down in the first place. Geralt spends most of the game surrounded by antagonists whose goals we''re at best ambivalent towards. Of all the characters, the only ones who succeed in achieving their goals are Radovid, Letho, and the off-screen Emperor Emhyr.

Im through ep 3 and onto 4, and I think it's a huge mistake to even mention GoT let alone compare this to it. A much better comparison would be that movie where Sean Connery does a voiceover of a dragon, or those D&D movies, at least for me. Further confirming a widely known suspicion that the games were written much better than the books. GoT lived and died by it's refusal to conform to the high fantasy stilts, the HBO show in the beginning was really well made and had great actors. The leads in this probably could not do the prostitute in GoT, laughably bad acting, Im just watching a fantasy porno. Polish Van Helsing played by loving Superman doesn't need political intrigue, it's all wrong for me so far but I will stick it out to the end. Considering that people are saying what I saw was the peak of the show though, I guesstimate that unreasonably mean reviews are probably justified, it's all kind of a cringy mess in the Disney Star Wars kind of way for me.

Maybe I'll fire up Witcher 2. I played the living hell out of it when it first came out. I think I played through the whole game 4 or 5 times. Plus getting that dude the harpy armor is a fantastic quest.

I really dislike the depiction of magic the show went for, specifically it consuming your life force or whatever. For one, it makes Aretuza a really brutal place, the way they turn poor students into eels to power up the school. As mentioned by others Yennefer sends Ciri to this place later on. Would she really have done this if there was a chance Ciri would get non chalantly turned into a battery?. Mages characterized as elite, rich, power hungry, decadent, but human sacrifice is too much and made me instantly loose any sympathy for Tissaia and everyone else. Then these two Nilfgaardian mages sacrifice their lives to create like, a lovely fireball? That get deflected instantly with no ill effects to the defenders? I think later on this will create a problem where important mage characters are obviously immune to the ill effects of magic as they do awesome stuff. Yennefer is supposed to go blind after this battle, but that's too little for creating a firestorm if a measly fireball cost the lives of two mages, idk. And of course Nilfgaard has no problem sacrificing these mages like this because they're religious fanatics now which is the other bad part of this show for me. Geralt's parts were good though.

Thing is though, like I've noted earlier in the thread, the TV show takes the good parts of the books and dumbs them down. A series widely known and lauded for its grey morality suddenly gets out-and-out villains and black and white morals, just like every other bog-standard fantasy show. The political intrigue is one of the main parts of the books; outside of the short stories, there actually isn't a whole lot of 'witchering' that is being done, it's in fact mostly politics and machinations and rather a lot of war strategy. Cut out Ciri completely from season 1 (unless you go back and put her and Geralt meeting in Brokilon), and cut out most of Yen and spend more time on actually fleshing out the short stories (and not dumbing them down 'for tv') and this could have been amazing. Right now I'm just like "well that was ok, hopefully will do better next season and gain momentum?'.

One thing I’m noticing on my second viewing that I really like is that Geralt’s armor, over time, starts looking shittier and shittier. It’s a small detail but I think it’s cool when you see him in episode three and his armor is missing rivets and has holes in it.

Another case of making a 'for tv' decision that kinda sucks tbh: late book spoilers The show says 'fire magic is forbidden' which is a (dumb) twist on *drawing* from fire as a source being *dangerous*. In the books mages generally use water or the earth as sources for their magic, as they are stable. Ciri, while lost in a desert and dying of hunger/dehydration, without any magic in the area to draw from ends up trying to use a small fire as a source to cast magic and heal her wounded unicorn companion, against Yennefer's previous warnings. Ends up being like PCP where she believes herself capable of anything with the huge amount of power available to her and she goes a bit mad with it, until she actually burns out her ability to use magic entirely. From that point on she's unable to do even the simplest of spells. I like that bit of sacrifice better than just 'oh hey have a mook wizard come over and turn into dust so we can cast a thing'.

There aren't a lot of mages too. From Nilfgaard's (and any other realm's) point of view they are a valuable asset. Turning one to dust do cast a fireball is just silly.

How old is Ciri in the books / show? She seemed young-adult in the video game and I couldn't estimate an age in the show - would've guessed early teens or maybe less than that. Just looked up the actress and was surprised to see she's 18.

I realize that may be the case for the later books, but IMHO it's the wrong approach all together to assume that this Netflix Original will even make it that far. I agree with cutting the other two characters would have done wonders. What they should have done is made it full action and targeted such a fanbase, you already have Superman, like I said. Geralt is basically fantasy "all the X-men and Marvel dudes/Superman/Batman/Sherlock Holmes/sexy Gandalf" all in one. It would have been the equivalent to the origin season of "short stories" slowly introducing everyone to this weird world and it's gears, quirks, mechanics and all with just Geralt doing his ghost investigator routine, playing to this show's production team strength which seems to be entirely in the special effects department (though not terribly consistent either.) Yeah, I can see that being more accurate that you probably even intended in that no one has really done a good anime adaptation without falling to the curse. I guess the amount of "known film curses" this has going against it, it can get some credit for not being even worse but Im not sure if I can say that yet having not finished it yet.

It's a way to 'nerf' the mages and not be super powerful in the series, avoiding use of f/x and to explain why they can be beaten with smaller armies. To be honest, the video games also nerf them, for different reasons: they would be too much as enemies. In the books they are more the type of wizards of 'turn anyone I don't like into hens with a touch of my wand' or 'summon giant block of ice to encase someone in it in 0.2 seconds'. Very powerful.
