Part of what's smart about Empire is that they establish some pre-existing romantic tension between Han and Leia. It's hard to sell 0 to 60 on stuff like that, particularly when you're dealing with the amount of chemistry Hayden and Natalie Portman have. The vast, vast ocean of chemistry they have.

Natalie Portman is a very good actress with an Oscar under her belt and has had many great roles since, but those performances in the prequels felt like she was reading lines off her hands.

A side effect of Lucas’ dialogue, probably, but yeesh.

Yeah for all the flak I tend to throw Bioware's way (I think they always were a little hacky and it just became apparent in recent years), the decision to place KOTOR where they did was smart, and it was a decent plot. It's probably their only game except for BG2 I really like.

BG2 was made by Black Isle (now Obsidian) using Bioware's engine.

Nah, BG 1 & 2 were both Bioware developed, Black Isle made the Icewind Dale series and only published the rest

It was the effect Lucas was intending as a genre hallmark. He’s said this. Many people have said it. It’s clear 100x. It’s obvious he can get “non flat” performance from actors when he wants to. He intended her to be flat. People growing up with Tarantino don’t expect it or think it’s “right” to have non “naturalistic” readings but cinematic history is vast and “naturalistic” acting is one branch. It’s not right or wrong

There's essentially no way Disney could lose money on this, but I feel like they aren't getting the returns they expected from this franchise.

uh whats your point? TLJ haters pointed out that the third film would have a lower opening weekend because people will have given up on the trilogy after TLJ and that seems to have happened so i'm not sure what you're saying.

Prequels good. Attack of the Clones is like what if we spent a hundred million dollars to make a quirky arthouse film only with action scenes. It's a movie where a kung fu goblin fights Dracula, and it's played as high drama. Who would ever make something like that? The answer is virtually nobody, so audiences are unused to it.

Accepting a movie for what it is, rather than feeling confusion and frustration by trying to read it as what it is not, makes it possible to enjoy movies as bad even as The Rise of Skywalker (but not much worse than that), and find and savor what merit is in them.

Han in Empire is a tremendous negging creep who ignores all of Leia's attempts to get him to respect any kind of boundaries. Her immediate reaction when 3PO interrupts Han forcing a kiss on her is to run the gently caress away. The only reason why it doesn't come off horribly is because 1980 Harrison Ford is incredibly attractive and charming and Kirshner directs everything to be sympathetic to him in spite of the actual action.

I feel like this gets at people's real problem with the scene however: at this point in the story, he's not her husband. They basically met 48 hours ago. I think it's less that people are shocked that she's okay with murder than that she's okay with ultra violence from this random dude she just met. You can substitute Sand People with Cliegg Lars's ratty old couch and it's still a pretty weird scene.

That’s the same kind of blanket moral rejection: Padme shouldn’t fall in love with this guy, right?

But seeing Anakin in pain, coping with PTSD or whatever, is precisely what attracts her to him - to such a degree that they do get married at the end of the film. Whether she should marry Anakin is irrelevant, because she does. They genuinely love eachother, which leads to enormous violence.

idk Leia seems pretty into it the whole movie

now that love scene in Blade Runner, there’s some super rapey poo poo that only kind of plays because it’s Harrison Ford

Idk I kinda thought the rapiness was intentional. The idea of two automatons having these kinds of interactions is definitely thought provoking. Or maybe the script is just a mess idk.
