I said that it seems right now she's being mocked for the posts she made, not being transgender. I don't know if you're purposely ignoring where I said that. Being rightly angry at transphobia doesn't mean you can't also make posts that non transphobes would consider bad/laughable/whatever. The example of star citizen was to try to divorce the two things, since presumably you can see the concept of mocking a poster who makes bad star citizen obsessed posts without that mocking being intrinsically related to their identity as a person.

I don't understand how this compares. I'm not chasing you into other threads, you responded to me and asked me to elaborate in an accusatory tone, and snidely accused me of whining. Why exactly am I the sealion here? I have not said a single hostile thing to you or to anyone.

Like I honestly don't know how to word it. I've deleted and rewritten this post probably four times because I cannot think of a way to even talk calmly about it without appearing to be trying to rile people up. It's loving stressful and I don't know how to respond to someone quoting a comic of a silly sealion at me as if I'm transgressing something.

I absolutely believe that FYAD created a thread about a specific trans poster who vocally called them out as bigots because said trans poster's posts are objectively the most mockable. I am glad to see that FYAD has learned to cope with the rules that were newly imposed on them in a healthy way that demonstrates understanding of said rules and why they were implemented.

wondermark posted:

It has been suggested that the couple in this comic, and the woman in particular, are bigots for making a pejorative statement about a species of animal, and then refusing to justify their statements. It has been further suggested that they be read as overly privileged, because they are dressed fancily, have a house, a motor-car, etc. This is, I suppose, a valid read of the comic, if taken as written.

But often, in satire such as this, elements are employed to stand in for other, different objects or concepts. Using animals for this purpose has the effect of allowing the point (which usually is about behavior) to stand unencumbered by the connotations that might be suggested if a person is portrayed in that role — because all people are members of some social group or other, even if said group identity is not germane to the point being made.

Such is the case with this comic. The sea lion character is not meant to represent actual sea lions, or any actual animal. It is meant as a metaphorical stand-in for human beings that display certain behaviors. Since behaviors are the result of choice, I would assert that the woman’s objection to sea lions — which, if the metaphor is understood, is read as actually an objection to human beings who exhibit certain behaviors — is not analogous to a prejudice based on race, species, or other immutable characteristics.

My apologies if the use of a metaphorical sea lion in this strip, rather than a human being making conscious choices about their own behavior, was in any way confusing.

As for their attire: everyone in Wondermark dresses like that.

To bring some mirth in, the CATS thread had a Champagne Socialist Theory Man crash in to complain how musicals are inherently bourgeois because in reality time never stops for the working proletarian to have a song and a dance. Everyone promptly starts making fun of him, good laughs were had.

sure okay posted:

Its all about how you instinctively react to the concept of the “time out.” To me, Time Outs always snap my suspension of disbelief. Like someone pulling out a ray gun during a period piece. It rings false, no matter the context, because my life is not one where that sort of thing is afforded.

But others see it as a learning tool, a narrative tool, etc. Their life has had IRL instances of a Time Out, even in smaller quantities. People have listened to them.

To me its like Bugs Bunny throwing up a finger at Elmer Fudd. Stop! Dont shoot me! Let me do My Thing first!

If theres a musical that doesnt employ this extremely tired trick id love to see it. But for the most part its “lets all stand around and listen to the hanged man sing before we actually hang him.”

If you dont see how this is inherently bougie I really dont know what to tell you.

Not even trolled, like I will totally admit the tactic people try to apply the term to, is a real thing. People do rely on civility and :decorum: to make another side look bad, like the whole 'I'm just asking questions?' shtick.
But yeah the dumb comic is a pretty bad example because the sealion in question never really does anything wrong, and yeah if you inserted nearly anything else in there, the woman looks like a bigot.
Hell even just inserting a 1st panel where the sealion was being an rear end first would've probably fixed it. If anything she's more guilty of 'sealioning' since she provokes and insults the other person then plays the victim because they won't drop it or completely capitulate when she's trying to set the rules of the conversation.
It's also interesting that every time that comic comes up there's a discussion of who really is in the wrong, not just on this forum I think the author has commented on wishing they hadn't made it just because of how much it's overshadowed their other strips. It'd be like if the only garfield we talked about was when john drank dog jizz

Edit: ah someone posted one of the lovely defenses the author published. Like you can always just admit 'oh I can see how you read it that way, it wasn't intended that way' instead of digging deeper to justify yourself

For example, never once in my life have I ever said the opposite of my argument, befuddling my opponent who reactively shouts out my position instead, only to be shot in the face. This makes bugs bunny a class traitor for advocating improper praxis'
There's good arguments for why theatre should be more 'of the people,' and it's usually outside their price range, but yeah a movie adaptation of a musical is probably the least guilty of that.

It's hard to swallow the justification that the author had the foresight to make the sealion a sealion rather than a human so that it would abstract the connotations of their social group, but didn't think to apply that logic to the human beings in the comic, who have unambiguous privilege. The comic conveys its point poorly.

I do feel a little isolated from the trans community in here in that I don't share a lot of interests with them and am a bit younger than a lot of posters here by a decade or so, and also I've said some lovely things about trans people I regret out of frustration with how slow my goal to pass all the time seems to be going, so I don't think it's wise for me to butt in beyond just posting my thoughts, though. I don't really gain anything from defending lowtax or from trying to calm down people who have a different perspective on this issue since I feel like it's been handled fairly ok by the admins and mods so far (compared to the last time I tried to call out a poster on there for being super transphobic, I ate a week long probation because "well she doesn't post outside FYAD, so why care?", so big improvement to see that same poster finally get something for being really awful to fellow trans people) but they don't seem to view it that way.

The first thing they did in the new forum was rush to create threads making fun of the idea of not using slurs. They still honestly think in 2019 that words like "t**nny" or "n**ga" are just "bad words" like saying gently caress or bitch, and not denigrating garbage that dehumanizes vast swathes of people while using ancient 2006-era arguments about having minority members excusing their behavior en masse somehow. They argued for months, if not years in QCS, that their hyper specific community context of two dozen posters somehow excuses this based on some self-imposed, arbitrary metric of irony and "it's just a joke." That managed to completely derail and stall any progress towards uprooting that shithole and bringing it to modern, non-moron standards, for ages.

When it comes to brass tacks, you cannot take anything they say at face value. They've made forum careers out of skirting the rules. It's virtually a skill they've developed just keeping their posts shy of blatant bigotry. Even if a trans poster was being a shithead regardless of identity, you cannot sincerely accept their protestations that it was posting quality that inspired their mocking. There is an undercurrent of mocking identity under virtually all their posts. The current forum drama is awash with that context.
