100hp/liter has always been an NA benchmark. Forced induction changes the math entirely.

I'm surprised that "Maserati" was an ace for number 10.

Oh. Per litre. Of displacement. My brain read hp per pound, thinking vehicle weight. DUH. hosed up that one!

Exactly. We weren’t going for “that’s sufficient”, we were going for “that’s powerful”.

400 hp out of a 2.0, 500 from a 2.5, 600 from a 3.0, those are numbers that make me think “powerful”

Of course those numbers don’t work when we get to V8’s but those will sadly be extinct soon so why let them ruin my math?

Suppose I could twin turbo my LS2 to 1,200...

I don't know man everytime I go to the gym here there are like two huge dudes with raging high and tights snorting Nitro-tech off of each other's rock hard abs.
This is one of a series of questions that is super simple, but I didn't quite understand. I thought it meant, "where does an engine begin feeling powerful?" and not, "where do you get impressed by the power?"

I still think electric start is a huge deal. It means the car doesn't try to kill you just starting it. Well, much less often at least.

Honestly Kw per litre is kinda useless to think about in "powerful". A 160Kw 3 litre in a 1000kg car is going to feel a drat sight more powerful than the same engine in a 2500kg luxo barge. Whats the use of a 300Kw 2 litre turbo if it's not in something light?

Plus...

meatpimp posted:

A 6 litre V8 would be 450Kw as a NA - That's a huge whack of power in anyone's language in the right car.

I Want To Believe.
I still feel that bhp per litre is a useful metric for "state of tune", it's interesting to ballpark how much they've turned the wick up on something.

But your view is influenced by what sort of tune the cars you grew up with were in. I remember 60-70bhp per litre being what you got in the "quick" variants of production cars.

Meanwhile the Honda Civic has changed dramatically over the course of its existence. It's gone from a tiny, cheap, subcompact that was little more than a kei with a bigger engine to a sporty compact that is highly variant in looks and pricing across trim levels. You could probably fit a first gen inside the cabin of a current gen hatchback.
