If you watch his other videos, he does a ton of "OK, I'm gonna take this sample, slice a bunch of drum sounds out of it, find something roughly tonal and tune it chromatically, then make an entire song out of that".

Cool, a couple of days ago I watched one where he records a sound from a copper pineapple and manipulates it - didn't know he had other ones, I'll check them out!

Is it a speaker, a vent, a plastic spacer or what is it?

This is a fun one, where he makes Sandstorm using only samples of a sandstorm:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSE3obVArLI

He also does a lot of it in his "four producers one sample" series (as do many of the other producers he does it with). The one with Virtual Riot is good:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvKY_DnM1PA

In that one, the sample was just of a squeaky door closing, and Virtual Riot used nothing but the squeaky door (and a ton of processing) to make a complete future bass track.

Edit: I should add that Andrew Huang and co are largely doing their work in DAWs, but those are great videos to watch to get ideas for different workflows.

What does it mean?
Fun Shoe
Speakers: very useful if you're practicing at home, not so much use on stage (these tend to be called stage pianos instead of just digital pianos)

Still, for the lower budgets the speakers are kind of cramped, but sometimes it's just nice to be able to switch something on and play instead of having to fiddle with keyboard amps or headphones.

The keyboard feel is pretty essential here; for about the same money you can get a Roland FP30. Pick what your fingers prefer; manufacturers have their own tastes as well. Mass is important - a light-weight case will cause that the keys feel fake or bouncy as well.

Given that sample memory is so big nowadays there's no more really bad or unconvincing piano sounds, just a character you may like or not.

Any advice for stacking multiple desktop modules vertically on one's desk to make more space? Say you have an OB-6 desktop and something else desktop, and you want them on top of each other.. it doesn't look like that's quite an option unless you're building a eurorack.

I found this 3D printed stand back in the day, but it's basically only one tier.

Depending on how big/heavy they are, you can look into laptop stands (might be under DJ stands in a music store).

How did I not discover codeKnobs before for my OB-6? Being able to configure and automate the thing like any other soft synth, while actually still having the box on your desk that you can always override things on, is game changing. Especially when it has no UI for you to explore the existing presets, and this thing actually gives you one...

https://www.codeknobs.com/products.php?id=12

BTW, it's SO clever for Sequential to give you a "here's a great use of this preset" sequence to play for every single preset. I feel like I could spend the next couple of years going through all of their 500 presets and getting inspired by them. At one point I was thinking "Man, I feel like I maxed out the sonic possibilities of this thing" only to realize "Nope, you're a dumbass"

Might I offer a bit of a challenge to the thread? Have you ever heard Wendy Carlos' music, like this: https://youtu.be/GwYWp_bOWZg

Well nobody does anything like that. So my friendly challenge to you is by January 20th to get a bit of the ol' ultraviolence out of your system and do synthesizer covers of orchestral songs. I'd be really interested to see what you can do with it! I will post something later.

I've been lurking this thread forever and haven't really done anywhere near as much music as I'd like so I'm going to attempt something here. I've found some Beethoven that I'm going to try and do something with: my picking out notes by ear skill isn't what it used to be so I'm using the orchestral score from http://musopen.org to help me work out what to play. Might be useful for anyone wanting somewhere to start?

Nice! That one makes me want to break out the Streichfett. These have all been done by pulling apart MIDI files and feeding them one layer at a time to eurorack. This one's a bit more modern in style and with some more effects:

Random tip to anyone else doing this through a monosynth: Pick wind ensemble midi files - much less annoying to pull apart than keyboards and strings.
