I think the demonization of rurals stems from the electoral college BS. We see a state like MO go red and all 10 EC votes go to Trump, and coasties seem to assume that 100% of people in that state voted for him. In reality, no more than 2 of 3 people voted R in 2016, and if you go back to 2008 the Democrats lost by 0.1% (49.2% vs 49.3%). The EC is winner-take-all, and thus paints the false picture that every red state individual votes R when, in actuality, there are plenty of people who will and do vote D. Hmmmmmm maybe we should try to appeal to them and bring them out to the polls?

Looking at county based election maps instead just makes it even clearer that rural Missouri is a big part of the problem, and that the blue voting areas are St Louis, Kansas City and Columbia. Urban Missouri. I mean yeah, lovely suburban areas are no doubt a big issue as well, but are you trying to tell me that this map indicates rural Missouri is a land of contrasts?

Now that map does open the eyes about some rural areas being blue, or at least pink. Don't get me wrong. But it also shows that yeah lots of places also fit that stereotype, and the crime of "coasties" is more mentally erasing red state cities from existence (and southern rural black people).

Unforunately, the electoral college makes it so that you need some rural support to win. Greater St Louis/KC and Greater Boston vote D at about the same rate in Presidential elections. What makes Massachusetts a safe Dem state and Missouri a safe GOP state are how the rural areas of each state overwhelmingly vote one way or the other. Every state that's reliably Democrat on the national level is either dominated by urban areas or has rural areas that are at least partially sympathetic to voting Democrats.

Urban Missouri. I mean yeah, lovely suburban areas are no doubt a big issue as well, but are you trying to tell me that this map indicates rural Missouri is a land of contrasts? Missouri and its neighbors to the northwest are a bit unusual in that rural MI is big Trump country where people actually showed up to vote for Trump, instead of just voting for nobody: https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2018/politics/voter-turnout/ Typically the sticks are where voter suppression and disengagement are really big issues and surprise surprise, they don't affect the chud landlords NYT reporters keep on speed dial. Pillheads in a tarpaper shack didn't make Trump happen in some mass bumpkin insurgency, they mostly just stayed home while college-dropout small business owners and suburbanites got out the vote for the GOP the same way they have for decades. But god forbid a liberal point the finger at their own class instead of the nearest poor person. A Wizard of Goatse has issued a correction as of 07:35 on Dec 29, 2019 |

It’s not very socialist to write off millions of people and plan for them to die. Kill the capitalists and most rural states will be fine in a generation or two.

I agree it’s bad practice to go on TV and say “Vote for me, I’ll kill all the white people.” I agree that you should try to appeal to improving material conditions to peel of as many poor rural people as possible. But for me, in this thread, I’m gonna watch Trumpers get hosed and I’m gonna enjoy it.

it's easy to forget that in even the reddest of states there's fairly leftist urban centers and likely even the most blood red counties have leftists in them that have no means to escape their living hell, plus yeah the midwest, rust belt, and appalachia used to be quite leftist until commies bad usa usa usa

the three tiny blue dots you probably can’t even see on a phone in TN (one of which is an actually tiny county of 17,000 people) are 24% of the state’s population. I don’t think this is relevant to anyone but me but it’s kind of exasperating to realize.
