Intelligent and bright, they explored a world that was new and strange to them. They liked it, they thought - a whole world just for them! They were dimly aware that a God had created them, was watching them; they called out to him, thanking him in a chittering language, before running off.
I was the only kitchen supervisor who got no holiday off this year, and nobody even talked to me about how they couldn’t squeeze me in, I just got scheduled for every day and didn’t even realize until after the holidays I was the only one. I sent the executive chef a short email just saying I felt it had been unfair. I didn’t ask for anything or act upset, I tried to be professional.

Our director answered me with a paragraph about how that’s what leads do and to deal with it, which wasn’t even a response to what I had actually said, and finished off by berating me for leaving early the other day, requiring them to close a restaurant.

I left at 3am because my wife was being rushed to the ER with chest pain and an irregular heart beat. I messaged both my bosses trying to get someone to come in, and our graveyard shift is so slow that I don’t think I have ever even sold enough food to pay my wage, much less everyone’s. Also that has nothing to do with the holidays (except it seems extra lovely to get pissed at someone for a hospitalized wife at Christmas time)

I was displeased. I sent a much longer email, in a professional tone, discussing all the problems I have right now, including the fact that I currently do three different job at three different shifts, and none of them are what I was hired for, in the restaurant I was hired in, or meaningfully build my career or skills in other ways.

Edit/addendum: I work in a casino big enough to have an HR department, and I very purposefully worked with my emails to show a very conciliatory tone. If this escalates too much I want to be able to go and show that I wasn’t the unreasonable one. My email ended with “My honest goal is to find a way to be satisfied and fulfilled by my job and career progress while still ensuring the casino gets the work it needs accomplished.”

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed shitposting.
I'd get your resume together, not because I think there will be any retaliation or anything, just it's very clear they don't particularly care about advancing you, so if you want to grow in skills or title/compensation, it sounds like you'll have to do that somewhere else.

I am at least well compensated, and my direct chef I like and respect. He has realized I’m serious and has already scheduled some time tomorrow to start training me on the more administrative duties that a chef does, but I have very little experience with. It won’t be enough in the long run, but it will tide me over while I try and get something official done.

In the end it will probably come to leaving, this place just doesn’t seem to be able to turn things around. But the money is good enough to at least try and push for what I need to be fulfilled.

(For anyone who has been following along since I was having panic attacks about disappointing my last employers by leaving for more money: I have since gotten diagnosed with thyroid failure and started hormone replacement, which has greatly cleared up my anxiety problems. A daily dose of Zoloft helps too, and now I am much better able to tell my bosses what I actually need, and also much better able to tell them to gently caress off if it comes to that. Thank you everyone who encouraged me to get my poo poo together (or straight told me to toughen up), it was what lead to me talking to my doctor and realizing there was an actual physical problem making my mental health worse)

If you're already taking more burden then you're hired (and therefore paid for) don't pick up admin duties as well. If the chef is just teaching you and not expecting you to practice that's weird but they won't be able to get you the compensation that should come with more responsibilities. Do not let personal feelings for coworkers allow management to take advantage of you. Look for a new job and, although I think you have too much work ethic, stop giving a gently caress for this place, they put in writing they don't care about you.

I am not picking up admin duties and other things, I explicitly asked to be trained because they are things I have not done much in my career that I feel are my biggest weakness outside the kitchen. I’ve done ordering from a warehouse, but not direct ordering, I’ve done some menu building, a little catering planning, but not enough to consider myself proficient. The casino environment I am in (Tribal casino very closely managed and controlled by the tribal body) doesn’t allow me much room to actually do many of those things regularly (they know who all the chefs are and only want to work with or through them).

I want this training not to do it here, now, for this casino, but so I have it going forward. Even if I end up somewhere with different policies and procedures I will at least have some experience. My chef is about 3/4 over this place as well and is willing to take a little time to make me more a more valuable employee even if it doesn’t help this casino.

As far as my actual job here, I am less attached than comfortable. I would be adding a half hour minimum, quite probably more, to my commute each way if I wanted to go elsewhere and make anything close to my current wage. My current drive is 10 minutes.

Ultimately, however, I told them and meant I wanted a compromise that gives me satisfaction and fulfillment, something that will help build my career. And if they can’t come to an agreement with me on that I will find something else and hand in my notice without a second thought. I’ve been too passive here, but I won’t be anymore. I realized it was time to insist on what I need from a job and if they can’t do that, to go find it

Sorry for the third long post basically in a row

Edit: I also have to admit there’s a small amount of spite in what I’m doing. Since I really would love it if I could make this job work out, as unlikely as that seems long term, and since we do have a strong HR department, I might as well see what other very unprofessional things she wants to send me in an email. Telling me I shouldn’t have visited my wife in the ER is a good start, but when/if I leave, I would love to dump a huge mess of HR trouble on her for her behavior. I won’t stay in a bad situation or risk my goals for it... but I wouldn’t mind at all if it works out.

It's not too bad. Setting up combos and specials is sometimes unintuitive, and the barcode scanning functionality was far from perfect last time I used it, and certain types of discounts just don't work how they should, but it's easy enough to use for the most part, and it has great analytics. If you're going to be doing a lot of in-depth and complex things, I would suggest keeping their priority tech support's phone number around. Hell yeah, spite is a drat fine motivator. Not only do you get to see people bring really lovely and can shittalk them back without giving a gently caress, but if you do it right (and it's looking like you are), you can also gently caress them super hard on your way out too. Once you hit that point of not giving a poo poo, it's almost like a fuckin Zen realization, it feels that good.

At the end of the day, you boss is always lovely, in one way or another. In this business, in more ways than most more often than not. The more time I spend in it, the more I see the industry as something built on the exploitation of one group of people for the purpose of exploiting another, marginally wealthier group of people in a different way. In other news, I am updating my resume and looking at lobs outside of hospitality.

"You work for lovely people" is true whether you believe in "The customer is always right" or not.

No reply to my email today, apparently our network was down most of the day. I did have my zen moment where I realize I just don’t give a gently caress anymore though. I’m still doing my job, and well, but gently caress the little poo poo. I’m updating my resume and emailing some recruiters tomorrow. Last I checked every casino within an hour of my home (four) had at least one chef and multiple cook openings.

I'm not sure when it happened but I've finally come to terms with the fact that I don't actually want to be a manager and anyone that would put me in charge of things is an idiot. Every new job people try to tell me they're gonna move me up and then it fades as they realize I'm poo poo with people and just really good at managing the chaos that is a solo line and making food

also Saturday night the GM called off the dishwasher right as she left at like 4pm and didn't bother telling my prep cook it was just me and him and the single server for all of close (since we don't have a manager most night shifts). We left the server to her own devices and loving killed it because if we redirect our natural animosity-slash-sexual-tension towards doing work we make a really good team, but I'm really glad it was as slow as it was so we had time to do four people's jobs with two

Sounds fun.

We have 4 in the kitchen and a KP but yesterday one was off the rota and busy, another very recently had a bereavement so we're giving him as much time as we can and another was sick. So just me and the KP, did about 65 covers and a load of prep. Had a 4 top and 2 3s order at once, managed to get out 23 plates (tapas) in 18 mins on my own with no complaints.

It can very easily go tits up but when you're against it and everything goes smoothly it's a great feeling.

Haha, nice. The patient count at the hospital jumped back up after Xmas. Which doesn't matter to me because I haven't been back there. And I'm off today AND tomorrow so I can enjoy myself. I have a 20 in my wallet to tip the bartenders. If I get the chance to get an atm beforehand, I'll grab another 20 to give to the kitchen at the pizza place that's doing karaoke tonight. I just wish it was warm enough I could wear a skirt, oh well.
