I'm assuming this is because 0-10VDC can be any current, so you could theoretically drive a shitload of current through a short in a short period of time, dramatically increasing the temperature at the short? And then that basically acts like a glow plug? I would assume using current as the analog control value sidesteps that. You can still generate 0-10V from that current using a tuned resistance but you've eliminated the heat problem because off-the-shelf wire won't generate an appreciable amount of heat at 20 mA. Edit: Oh it's even more interesting than that. The 4-20mA can be driven at any output voltage, so if your supply can provide current at any voltage, then your 4-20mA input still works reliably as long as your measuring equipment isn't dependent on any particular voltage level. Whereas if your equipment is designed to depend on voltage level and not current drive then a lovely power supply such as was in use at the time would result in inaccurate measurements to the control equipment. Hey, did anyone explain what was bad about those sewage pumps posted upthread? Also, what do y'all think the Least Bad Failure for that jury-rigged hoist is? If one of the chains snapped and dropped the engine straight down, the engine would be hosed but I don't think the LPG containers would explode.

Ex rating wasn't an issue, the borked control voltages led to inaccurate low readings from the pressure sensors and caused the automation to see that and crank all the regulating valves to 100% open until the weakest spot in the pipe ruptured somewhere north of 500psi Also 4-20 is usually nominal 24vdc but rated for the full range from 12-30v and since the minimum reading is still positive signal it's trivial to distinguish between a zero-reading sensor and a broken sensor/wire shame on an IGA fucked around with this message at 19:11 on Dec 31, 2019 |
