I am pretty sure it is against workplace safety regs to set your patient on fire.

About 15 years ago I dated a woman who was in the middle of a lawsuit because she got 3rd degree burns during a surgery. Apparently it was careless handling of whatever tool they use to cauterize stuff.

I like the part where the eucalyptus trees respond to being burned (not an uncommon occurence) by secreting extra poison in new blossoms. Koalas are a mistake.

tldr 8 dead, 60+ injured and ~$70m of property damage resulted from janky 24vdc power supplies.

this is why you always spec 4-20mA analog signals instead of 0-10v

Do you have any more info about the power supplies? Isn't 0-10V available in Ex safe versions?

I'm assuming this is because 0-10VDC can be any current, so you could theoretically drive a shitload of current through a short in a short period of time, dramatically increasing the temperature at the short? And then that basically acts like a glow plug?

I would assume using current as the analog control value sidesteps that. You can still generate 0-10V from that current using a tuned resistance but you've eliminated the heat problem because off-the-shelf wire won't generate an appreciable amount of heat at 20 mA.

Edit: Oh it's even more interesting than that. The 4-20mA can be driven at any output voltage, so if your supply can provide current at any voltage, then your 4-20mA input still works reliably as long as your measuring equipment isn't dependent on any particular voltage level. Whereas if your equipment is designed to depend on voltage level and not current drive then a lovely power supply such as was in use at the time would result in inaccurate measurements to the control equipment.

Hey, did anyone explain what was bad about those sewage pumps posted upthread?

Also, what do y'all think the Least Bad Failure for that jury-rigged hoist is? If one of the chains snapped and dropped the engine straight down, the engine would be hosed but I don't think the LPG containers would explode.

Ex rating wasn't an issue, the borked control voltages led to inaccurate low readings from the pressure sensors and caused the automation to see that and crank all the regulating valves to 100% open until the weakest spot in the pipe ruptured somewhere north of 500psi

Also 4-20 is usually nominal 24vdc but rated for the full range from 12-30v and since the minimum reading is still positive signal it's trivial to distinguish between a zero-reading sensor and a broken sensor/wire

The sewage pump was "Germany" brand with a little nazi emblem for the company's logo. The contractor thought this meant that they were made in Germany.

Humans.

We've cleared a lot of koala habitat, and the areas that remain don't get burned often enough so when the fires do go through they're devastating. Combine with climate change for a trifecta.

You want to look at deer for an example of that. Left to their own devices they'd happily genocide themselves through famine, humans have to kill a bunch of them every year to keep their numbers in check after we pushed out the apex predators that used to do that.

More because we eliminated a lot of their pests because they affect our livestock also. The predators make a difference too.

The rise of human civilisation caught pandas with their pants down.

They are in the middle of occupying a new niche. They’re really bad at digesting bamboo, but that hadn’t stopped them, and eventually they would have gotten good at it if we hadn’t interrupted them.

making GBS threads on pandas for being bad at eating bamboo is like making GBS threads on fish for walking on land.

It’s a knock‐on effect of their diet.

Being bad a loving is a compensation mechanism.

It’s better than having more children than they can nurse because there’s only so much energy the mother is getting from bamboo.
