there's a difference between a mario platformer and an extremely story-heavy, choice-focused roleplaying game

I say that depends on the pace of the game and its design, alongside the quality of life options for the crafting itself. Excluding obvious things that have it as a main focus, like terraria and minecraft, I find it fine when its quick and easy to do and lets you make stuff like consumables in bulk. Warframe is a great example of stuff both done right and horribly wrong, you only need to have the stuff and click a button to craft and you can search and filter for what you want to make, but you cant queue up more than one of the same item and cant have it just start another after the last finished or tell it to use things after they finish crafting to craft the whole they are part of. It gets really noticeably bad when you have 20 blueprints for a thing that you can never have enough of, but each of them takes 24 hours to make.

Honestly though Disco Elysium has a lot to say about toxic masculinity, particularly in the protagonist. A female protagonist would require addressing very different things. It's not impossible but I think its being severely underestimated how small the team and budget actually was for the game.

If those arent topics that interest you I absolutely understand, its not going to work for everyone and I'm not trying to sell people who arent interested on buying it. But I dont think misogny was the reason for the decision.

Yes, it is. There are tons of games that are a model swap and couple dozen voicelines away from having the choice to play as a woman, and I can understand being frustrated with them. Disco Elysium seems like a pretty bizarre choice to single out, because it's already a really elaborate and reactive RPG being made by an indie studio, and changing the protagonist to a woman would require a huge amount of additional text and dialogue changes. It would be cool if it existed, yes, but it would be a major undertaking.

Its fair if you can't play specifically a role playing game as yourself, but often when a role playing game is brought up in a positive light there is always someone who comes in and says actually its bad because you play a man and its tedious and pointless. No talk about the gameplay or the story, and whenever its brought up as a weak reason to not only refuse to play but to then call the game bad the person reacts like its some big patriarchal conspiracy to keep women out of video games. Its as if the strawwoman that reddit and 4chan loves bringing up in any kind of video game discourse was made real.

it's easy to not care about representation when your gender is the one that's everywhere. in the vast majority of games, you know you'll be able to play as a man. being able to identify with the playable character is something men take for granted, but is still immensely novel for women; hell i'd be happy if basically every game had a Prey-styled choice at the beginning. it's a little thing but makes such a big difference

Sorry for explaining why people want to tell someone to try a game they like when said person's reason for not playing it is the gender of the character.

Like I said, I understand where Overwatch is coming from and acknowledge she DOES play games with male protagonists, but when it comes to an RPG she wants to play a female cause that is who she identifies it. When people try to tell her why not give it a try anyways cause its a good game and try to put the main character's gender aside and it always causes these derails and its getting tiresome and repetitive with no one giving ground and talking past one another.

I am a Disco Elysium fan, but I'd say that if the reason you have not played this game or any game is because of an issue of representation, that is ultimately fair. It's not my wish that anyone feel less-than-included by the market of games such that you do not pick up every game because of it. Ideally, there would be enough well-written experiences like Disco Elysium for all kinds of stories and characters that representation would not be a barrier to play. That is a better world.

HIDDEN SEGUE TO NEXT COMPLAINT - I actually really enjoy Control's gameplay, but the setting, exploration, writing, etc. etc. are all so good that I really wish there was an easier difficulty option so I could recommend it to people who wouldn't normally play a game like it. I understand having games with one set difficulty when it's core to the experience, but with Control I honestly think the game would be about as good with a "skip fight" button.

Sekiro: After the halfway-point when Ashina Castle gets attacked I tire of the game. The rest of the game is almost entirely back-to-back with bosses with only one area left to explore. It's telling how small the game is when so many boss-arenas get reused and so many minibosses get palette-swaps.

Given that this is the sixth title by From you'd think they'd make an action-camera that doesn't blow. If the enemy towers over you or the room is cramped then the experience turns into a handheld movie directed by an epileptic.

The Dragonrot and crafting-system feel especially pointless. The Hidden Aid bonus is not something you'd ever rely on, and you'll only ever need to cure the disease once to advance an NPC's questline. It feels a waste that all the materials you pick up can only be used for making prosthetic-tools. It wouldn't have broken the difficulty to have some kind of ring or rune system that give passive buffs as in the previous games.

You could look it up? It's basically a spiritual successor to planescape. It's an isometric RPG focused on dialouge over combat, the dialogue is particularly snappy and clever. The reason people are going apeshit over it is it's something people have wanted for a long time and haven't gotten till now given the Torment: Tides of Numenera game was a bit of a flop and the other Isometric RPGs that have come out (Pillars of Eternity, Divinity: Original Sin) while good, are more combat focused while this isnt.
