You can pretty much guarantee that no one still in power in the US is aware of the nuances of any group in the middle east beyond finding arab (or persian for that matter) words scary

Yeah, Sumaidaie seems to be one of the more Iran-friendly Sunni clerics - not to say he never criticised them, but his default state is friendliness. He's also not immensely popular with Iraqi Sunnis.

Operation Ajax is one of my favorite examples of blowback due to US incompetence and hatred of democratically elected leftists.

Also the whole thing was about oil at the end of the day since the leftist government was going to nationalize the entire oil industry in Iran.

what the gently caress is it with the US and murdering medical personnel, it's like all of their guided munitions have a built-in doctor-seeking functionality

the invasion of Grenada lasted like three days and was against a microstate the size of Fort Lauderdale with no military whatsoever, and the US still managed to firebomb a hospital

I don't understand why we always wheel out some grand puppeteer narrative every time the US fucks something up. They blew up the wrong car either because they're incompetent or because they have such contempt for Arab lives that they decided a 50/50 shot to either blow up some guy we declared a terrorist at lunchtime or some medics was worth it

drat i wonder if a military that has intentionally killed journalists and medical staff specifically because they were journalists or medical staff would try to intentionally kill them again

For those who don’t know, this lady is the leader of the MEK. Started out as an “Islamic-Marxist” group opposing the Shah but has pretty much just been a weird cult for a long time. Since they now oppose the Iranian “regime” it’s taken seriously by idiots in the US. Both John Bolton and Rudy Giuliani has spoken at MEK rallies (for a hefty fee of course).

They’re going to topple the Iranian government any day now. Pessimists might say that the fact that they sided with Iraq during the Iran-Iraq war kinda limits their appeal in Iran but I’m sure that’s not a big deal.

The genuinely terrifying question, though, is how Trump would handle a serious military defeat. He can escalate harder than anyone else on Earth, and I'm not sure there's anyone willing and able to talk him down.
