They are honestly not too hard for the most part. The only quest that's really annoying is the casino quest.

So having just finished 11 I am craving more DQ and want to play the 4-6 trilogy. Are the phone versions the best because the sprites look like they're smeared in vaseline. Get the DS versions or wait for a Switch port which seems likely enough?

Any switch port would just be the mobile games, the DS versions are awesome though.

Phone versions are the same as the DS versions except that 4 has the party chat restored.

Don't know if I have the energy to start act 3 right now. I already know the broad strokes of what happens but unexpectedly the game did actually leave me wanting more after the credits while I totally thought I was going to be completely done with it for a while.

Sadly, feature-wise the phone version of 4 is the superior version right now because yeah, it restores content that was cut in the DS English release of 4. 5 and 6 are basically identical to the DS releases, so whichever floats your boat there; I think the phone versions look fine, but

I can't recommend the phone ports enough.

Faster than the others

I found the controls on the mobile version of 5 a bit janky, but overall playable, and would absolutely recommend the mobile version of 4 as the (so far) definitive version of the game. 6 also has some balance tweaks that technically make it the definitive version as well IIRC, but the DS version is still plenty playable. Also the DS version of DQ6 is currently like $200 on Amazon, and while the DS version of DQ5 is only $60-ish, the $15 price tag for the mobile version still beats both of those price points. If you want to play 4-6 now, the mobile versions are probably your best bet, but I'd personally hold out for Switch ports for better controls at the very least, even if they keep the visuals the same.

Goddamn. I didn't realize how much DQVI skyrocketed in price. I knew it got expensive and figured that $200 Amazon price was for a sealed copy, but eBay prices aren't much better. $65 for a cart only. Yikes.

Glad I bought mine for $20 a decade ago.

I found mine used in a Gamestop a few years ago for a reasonable price, and in good condition too.

Good, that's the sensible thing and this game is very user friendly so I expected it, really, but I couldn't shake my RPG instincts telling me that people are leaving the party and I should take their stuff before it's gone forever.

Yeah fortunately iirc the game even makes a point of saying that everything except a few plot items will go back with you.

You will, however, have to spend time reequipping everyone but given the act 3 premise that just makes sense haha.

You might hate yourself though if you didn't equip a certain someone with a certain accessory back in Act I

sometime in Act I, I think it's when you first open up the path to the First Garden, the game saves everything your party members have equipped and in their stash, and everything is returned to them once you get going into Act III. This means you can get an extra copy of items you would normally ever get one of, or double the amount of stat seeds you have gotten so far. The biggest one is you can get two Belle's Bows for Jade, which basically gives her unlimited MP.

Yeah it silently makes a loving "equipped items and also carry bag" save in Act I at a specific point, which can save you infinite time. Also allegedly it only works once on the Switch version but who knows.

No, I'm not going to hate myself for missing out on a minor bonus in this already pretty easy game. I did hear about this before finishing Act 1, too, but I decided I absolutely do not care for this level of optimisation. I mean, I've fought like half the bosses in this game with a full AI party with no trouble at this point!

Also as it happens I had the belle's bow equipped anyway. It's her best accessory.

Same here; I just happened to go into a Gamestop in the middle of nowhere one day and they had at least three of among IV, V, VI and IX for reasonable prices, so I gobbled them up. Very glad I did now.

My only advice for act 3 is to resist the urge to power combo your way to level 99 until you've done everything else. I did it too early in my first playthrough and felt like I missed out on some of the good act 3 bosses as a result.
