There's storms forming out west that will roll over the Mountains in the next hour according to the scanner. Hopefully they don't contain lightning cause we don't need any additional fires.

Some streamer on Twitch is about 9 hours into a charity stream for it and has raised $131k so far. Call my cynical, but considering a lot of the donations are tax deductible I bet they're probably in for a big payday.

Donated to the Red Cross and the rural fire services listed. Don't have much but I hope it still helps. Seriously worried about y'all, be as safe as you can be.

Good work on the links Grid, saved me from having to look up various charities. Now WIRES has some of what used to be my money. But goddamn, all those animals Really hope that there's ongoing efforts to restore their number as well. Koalas need all the help they can get. So good to see all the fundraising efforts, I really hope this leads to some sort of long lasting change, politically. There certainly seems to be enough anger about it right now. I don't hold out hope the LNP will wake the gently caress up, but maybe we'll get an actual climate policy that isn't "gently caress the climate, gotta keep those coal jobs around at any cost!" I have no idea what a suitable punishment would be for anyone who lit these fires though.

Quite a number of them where caused by lightning though. The places they've ignited and at the same time the reason they've grown as large is because they started in remote terrain that is mostly inaccesible unless you are on foot in the wilderness miles from any form of road or civilization. There was an excellent article showing the timeline of the Gospers fire which was started by lightning at the end of October. The Ruined Castle and Green Wattle Fires started the same way not much later on.

Yeah, it's the deliberately lit ones that I was specifically talking about, from that 7News tweet. That said, if some church is going to say this is punishment from God, then we should take all their money, because they're collecting it on his behalf right? Take inspiration from that Billy Connolly movie.

The fires being blamed on arson is largely part of conservative bullshittery and climate change denial, so don't hold out for anything in that area, most of it is smokescreen (heh) garbage to avoid responsibility on the authorities' side.

even if it was arson so what? there's always been arson, but never fires this big. the magnitude of the fires due to climate change is the issue, not how they started. don't let the jerks control the narrative again. don't all get bent up arguing with boomers on facebook about that one though. or do, maybe, and then donate to spite them.

Edit: to be more specific, it's going through their Streamlabs and then they're splitting the donations between a few of the different causes. It's not people donating directly to the charity.

a hot gujju bhabhi posted:Uhh, taxable donations are still a net loss to the donor you moron. Depends on the cost/value. If I generally provide a service for $120 an hour, but it costs me $30 an hour, I can use the $120 figure as a deduction. As long as my effective tax rate is high enough then that deduction could be worth more than actually selling the labour.
