Most of the people I have seen arguing that the Iranians will be rational about this are arguing that the goal of the Iranian gvt will be to walk a line with a retaliatory response which is notable enough to say "hey we did something" without actually starting a war. It is not clear to me that such a response exists because so much depends on whether the US wants a war (in which case it is only a matter of time before it has it) but right after it happened I saw a lot of suggestions that Iran was going to do something drastic and obvious, which I don't think they will because Soleimani's death doesn't really change the long term strategy for them.

They've already outmaneuvered the US politically by getting the entire world on their side with the exception of lol Israel and the Iraq parliament voting to kick out US forces. Even with our bloodlusting media I would think the idea of starting yet another forever war in the Middle East would be unpopular with a clear majority of Americans, but what do I know.
