I was able to utilize the skills and resume building from the Navy to secure a very good job that allows me to be a much more active parent, so that was the best thing about the Navy. It was still a terrible experience that may have caused some legitimate mental health damage to me though.

Report out on the stress test of the ready reserve fleet came out. I think the mission success rate was 40% which sounds really good to me so I'm not sure why they are so down. Average age of the ships is 45 years old, no parts or ability to do maintenance, I'm pretty impressed.

I am coming up on 20 years of honorable Dept of the Navy service and I am mostly bitter and resentful that I spent the better part of my adult life contributing to human misery in both Iraq and Afghanistan instead of doing something good in this world. I carry around as much self loathing as I imagine most of the rest of GIP, but even more so because I can't pretend like the life I chose wasn't a conscious decision I made over and over again each time I re enlisted. I picked this life because it paid my bills and I was too dumb to do anything else. Now I have to look in the mirror and instead of feeling pride in my accomplishments I find myself making excuses for the things I've done.

I grew up nowhere near any bases. So my first experiences were basically “wow, why is this such a shithole? Well ok maybe marines just don’t spend money on dumb things like infrastructure, hurhurhur. Ok wait now why is this navy place a shithole too, i thought surely they would spend money on dumb infrastrucure. Wait whaaaat? Paul's Pasta is incredible and everyone should go there. I stopped there on my way home from boot camp it was so worth it.

Other good Groton (no joke) things to do. Fort Griswold has some fun history and a great view from the top, ironically the Nautilus is a cool museum and walk-through, quick jaunt to Mystic seaport and a solid Aquarium. You're also pretty close to Mohegan Sun which is a killer of time, especially if you can catch something showing.

If you like hiking, Bluff Point State Park is nice.

So much of the military budget is just to line the pockets of military contractors.

e: and right now infrastructure money is instead redirected to building garbage rear end "wall" at monstrous markup.

North Park survival: Urbn in North Park is where I learned about clams on white pizza and I enjoyed it. Last time I came down though, the entire staff had changed over so who knows. Carnitas snack shack was great but they closed forever and I'm not sure if they're reopening. I liked The Mission's brunch better than Breakfast Republic.Tiger Tiger was pretty good. Everyone was raving about Underbelly, which I thought was pretty good. AJs Special and Singapore Rice Noodles at City Dragon (Chinese food with the logo ripped off of Mortal Kombat)--anything else go to Maxim's. City Tacos and water is just how you're supposed to end a night. Lefty's Pizza made me fall in love with Chicago Style lasagna pizza. Worst bar on a friday night was 7 Grand. Best bar on a Tuesday afternoon was 7 Grand. Oh and go to Awash Market. Just do it.

I think the best mussels I had in town and maybe in my entire life were the roquefort mussels at La Bleu Bohemme in Kensington. The Mexican restaurant nearby was nice but always too crowded.

Bahn Thai was great. Best brunch was Baja Betty's, but don't drive and don't make any plans because you're leaving there drunk. Favorite Japanese was Izakaya Masa. Best diner food is the Old Townhouse Restaraunt in Ocean Beach. I avoided and hated downtown, but once I went to a couple of places downtown for happy hour and deals were silly good. I think an in by 15, out by 17 in-and-out job would be tolerable.

There were good places, especially Korean in Clairemont Mesa, or what I used to call, 'Practically LA'.

How'd I do?

Edit: Oh yeah, I really liked Pomegranate, but it was hard to get people to. Get the golubtsi.

First, a caveat of I haven't been to SD in about 5 years, now

Tacos El Gordo
Hodad's
Pomegranate
The Mission
Pizzeria Luigi
Loving Hut

Names I can't remember:
the pho place across the street from the mission valley target
the sushi place in liberty station

I'd like to close by saying that Phil's BBQ and anyone who likes it can blow me

That's a pretty solid list, but I would like to emphasis how loving good Tacos El Gordo is. It's marginally expensive for the kind of taco place it is, but holy gently caress, you can't beat it.
It's also worth going somewhere and getting a california burrito. There used to be an ok burrito place North of the 32nd Street Main Gate, not sure if it's still there though.

Couple more:
Crest Cafe has a pretty good breakfast menu, and it won't have a hosed up wait like Hash House or Broken Yolk.
I like Sogno Di Vino/Buon Appetito in LIttle Italy.

Yeah, I didn't intend for the list to be in any specific order, but there's a good reason Tacos El Gordo is the very first place I think of if I'm trying to name good restaurants in San Diego

Edit: forgot the Point Loma Seafood market

Edit 2: I'm ashamed of forgetting these:

Tita's Kitchenette! So hard to find Filipino food outside of San Diego and Honolulu

Also, Royal Mandarin or Golden Chopstick for salt and pepper chicken wings, which is the #1 best fried chicken in San Diego, even though the rest of the food at those places are just standard American-Chinese takeout
