if only those gullible africans stopped trusting the insidious chinamen building railways and instead put their trust in honest westerners who *checks notes* bombed a nation with the highest standard of living on the continent back to the stone age and left it to rot

Lol why does everything have to be whataboutism with the United States? The US absolutely screwed over Africa. But guess what, so is China. Maybe Africa shouldnt be getting screwed over by any outside powers, whether they be nominally democratic Capitalists or nominally communist Capitalists.

I mean realistically we should be critical of how larger, more powerful countries engage with weaker countries in a capitalist society. But also people who hate what China is doing in Africa generally just assert that it’s bad without some kind of backing and all of the stuff I’ve seen coming out of it has seemed reasonable and fair as far as international trade and development deals go. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ah, a Stalinist.Pener Kropoopkin posted:It's plainly obvious that westerners only complain about China developing its interests in Africa, because they thought they could keep the whole continent under-developed and extract its resources at the lowest possible prices indefinitely. China is cutting African governments a better deal to fuel its own industrial development, and First Worlders can't stand that they're muscling in on our turf. Correct. It's still baby's first neocolonialism, is the thing. The Sicomines thing in the DRC is a good example, since China got essentially permanent access to valuable rare Earth materials in exchange for a couple hundred million dollars. This is in contrast to back in the Mao days where they just gave Zaire poo poo to swing them over against the Soviets and the US

Seinfeld: what's the deal about whataboutism? What about this? What about that? Have Africans thought about autonomously building their own ports and railroads? Am I the only person who's thought of this?

chinese outward FDI is pretty low relative to the country's size. and just having an outward FDI stock doesn't automatically mean imperialist when even third world countries invest beyond their borders nowadays. what is more important is the terms and conditions and the types of profits extracted

Africa is democratically electing governments that then try to avoid Western neolcolonialism by forming economic partnerships outside the IMF. This means Chinese imperialism to some people because they are bad faith fascist scum. Easy peasy.

Future is Asian, while the author has an obvious libertarian bias, has a decent look at the reality of why African and West Asian countries are incentivised to accept economic deals with China over the West.

cyka blyat posted:African Socialism is a foreign company owning the mining rights and having its entire structure be made up of non Africans. Only the exploited laborers are African. Neither of these things is true. Most of the workforce on Chinese projects is local, and many Africans train either at home or in China to replace Chinese labor farther up the value chain. There is also no evidence of mineral rights being demanded as part of the terms of loans. Some loans are paid with minerals, but the surplus remains in local hands as does ownership rights.

What if china is doing an imperialism? We could lose the discount culture of lovely borders made by the British a couple generations ago. How terrible. Who would trade classic imperialism for infrastructure and trade ties with a country that at worst could be said to be not as fully comunist as they say they are. Who would want that compared to American companies openly enguageing in resource extraction with the promise the worst terms they can get away with Reznor has issued a correction as of 22:38 on Jan 9, 2020 |
