the nice thing about the tower is that it's a distinct, separate thing and not just rerunning the normal story maps over and over

tho you can do that in fe8 too

I literally can't just play it like the old games and I suspect that is actually related to my OCD, but it's much less of a big deal with 3H since you can opt in to Hard and limit the amount of grinding possible. Also if it is an OCD thing I recognize that makes it kind of a personal issue and not some big indictment of the general game design, but it is nice to have options. Like having the option play classic or casual, the ability to do both I think is great and strengthens games.

Yeah I'm just like, if your game is gonna let me grind have a sensible limit on it. Whether it's not letting my grind much before pushing the story forward, or just...a clear end goal to said grinding. I need a limiter because I'm awful at self imposing one. Like in 3H I rarely grind because they limited it and I have other things I want to do.

Oh, no offense taken! It's not like I know for certain the OCD is the cause, and if it is, 'levelling a lot in video game' is way better than other ways it has manifested. Basically my stance is just that options are always good, but I recognize that implementing those options is work for developers. : )

For some reason I'm good at overgrinding in every FE game that allows it except Sacred Stones. As soon as the tower opens and I have a promotion item for somebody I spend hours grinding the tower to get them promoted stupid early, and end up steamrolling the game's second half. I don't know why SS alone breaks my brain so bad but it does.

RevolverDivider

I can’t understand doing that in SS when it’s already one of the easiest games in the franchise without touching the tower once.

I beat Sacred Stones with over half the cast dead lmao, desperately hoping the next map would replace a flier or something. And that was using the tower!

For some reason or another though I could flawlessly beat Hector Hard Mode, the Stones just tore me to shreds

Yeah I know SS is loving piss easy. I never really felt much desire to grind in Awakening, Fates, or TH, but for some reason I just cannot stop myself from spamming the tower in SS to get everybody promoted ASAP.

i've already complained about this in the official thread but they totally picked the wrong house. Deer is neither the shortest (that's a Crimson Flower run) nor the objective best house (that's the Blue Lions)

Byleth does get a personal class they always qualify for, if you keep playing through the story. You don't need to stress about class changes for her unless you really want to be something specific.

I was bored and curious, and my job happens to work with spreadsheets a lot, so I made a sheet of the three houses' character growths (not counting Beleth or plot NPCs like Flayn) to do some statistical analysis. Some interesting points:

The Blue Lions enjoy the highest total stat growths in the game at an even 2700 points. The Black Eagles follow at 2685, and then the Golden Deer at 2645.

Highest overall growth totals in the entire game belong to Edelgard at a mighty 385, trailed by Dimitri at 375 (Claude, Beleth, and Ingrid weigh in at 370).

Lowest goes to Lysithea at 280, proving that stat growths don't matter as long as you get good ones where it counts. Dedue follows at 290.

The Golden Deer are a house of specialists: the characters with the highest HP (Raphael), MAG (Lysithea), DEX (Claude and Lysithea tied), and LCK (Ignatz, tied by Shamir over in the Church) all hail from the Alliance.

For the other stats, highest STR goes to Dimitri, highest CHA to Edelgard, highest RES to a tie between Linhardt, Mercedes, and Marianne (though Flayn beats them all); and Petra, Ingrid, and Leonie (plus Manuela and Jeritza) all have the same blazing 60 speed.

The Black Eagles boast the most generally high stats of the lot, with no one clocking in under 305. The Golden Deer are the only house with multiple characters under 300 total (Lysithea and Raphael). The Blue Lions have Dedue under 300, but also Ingrid hanging out with the same stat total as Claude and Beleth (and the fourth place stat total goes to Felix and... Lorenz?!).

Your statistical median character of Three Houses would have:

HP: 40
STR: 40
MAG: 30
DEX: 45
SPD: 50
LCK: 35
DEF: 30
RES: 27.5
CHA: 35

With an overall stat total of 340 - a total on par with Hilda and Ignatz.

I have no idea, but that's what Excel spat out from the same click-and-drag I used for the other medians. :v:

Edit: Upon investigation, it's due to the Blue Lions. I have no idea why Excel is spitting out a fraction as the median for their RES, but they're the ones to blame. The Eagles and Deer work out fine.

Can I just spam the same favorite gift on a character without losing effectiveness? So far I have been rationing them out for house students to keep their motivation up but going whole hog for the ones for outside houses.

If a thing says it will end the month early, can I just hold off on that to take advantage of the extra days or will that have an effect

Feel free to spend the whole month doing whatever you please.

I heard this recently, but apparently if you do the rescue mission early Seteth gives you an extra stat booster later. I don't know if this actually happens but that's still not worth skipping the month for even if true.

Personally, I liked the solution in Fates (I know, I know), where you could decide on the availability of grinding via the version you bought, or better, 3H where choosing Hard or up means you are suddenly given a maximum of 3 chances per week to grind, and there is an opportunity cost. The finite amount of exp in classic FE games was always a draw for me because you have to be strategic in who you level and because it meant I couldn't give in to my worst impulses and just sit around compulsively levelling without penalty. But having the option for some limited grinding for catch-up is also good!

Agreed about the tower in Sacred Stones not triggering the same issue, and I really couldn't say why. Edit: Actually I think it is because like was said above, the lack of skills or missable treasure in that dungeon (iirc) means it doesn't feel like you are missing out if you don't 100% the tower.

Fates was real dumb because in Conquest you could viciously screw yourself to the point of being literally unable to complete the game without grinding units through maps that were autoleveled such that the units they needed to kill for XP were almost completely invincible.
