I know exactly what sort of nasty anime poo poo I hate and I'm pretty specific about it. Japan's comics and animation culture has produced an enviable amount of transcendent works (especially manga) but also a huge amount of embarrassing solipsistic pervert poo poo custom made for depressed losers to embitter themselves against the real world and slump towards the grave obsessing over who the "best girl" in a voyeuristic "slice of life" or "mmo harem" show is. I blame go nagai that slippery little pervert.

I hate to admit it, Azumanga Daioh was a mistake because while I was going "ha ha I'm spacy just like Osaka", others were going "Chiyo-chan is my waifu".

Nothing wrong with some good honest perversion, I just don't appreciate the drive to systematize the perversion so all the world-building and tropes are aligned to service a depressing masterbatory fantasy-world from the perspective of a depressed voyeur desiring a plastic ideal.

Actually one of the best scenes I remember from Paranoia Agent is an otaku's plastic figurines being the ones who spoke for him, calling him just an empty shell.

(This was while reality was breaking down and generally being batshit, which is one of the most enjoyable parts of any Kon works.)

Kill la Kill was horny as hell, but at least its female characters got to be tough badasses and not swooning over some boring self-insert male protagonist.

At the bare minimum trigger seems to approach making horny from a more assertive, playful, and explorative place than a lot of anime pop-sexualization. It doesn't give me the same sort of "pathetic" and passive vibe as some stuff. They are still usually too horny for my tastes though. The set-up they came up with for Darling in the Franxx is some galaxy brain horny world-building though, it's farcical on it's face in a way that makes me laugh every time i see people seriously discussing it.

This is what fascinates me most in existence: the peculiar necessity of imagining what is, in fact, real.

Darling in the Franxx is... something that's for sure.

I still can't get over the fact that the studio that made Franxx and KLK also made Little Witch Academia.

Either way I roll my eyes at anime hate now because it boils down to "the animation made by this country is all bad" which should be as ridiculous as "the films made by this country are all bad".

Now if you want to trash Western "otaku" culture. There's a loving thing to trash.

Hating on anime is basically the "I listen to all music genres except rap and country" of cinema.

Also, Paranoia Agent chat, best anime ever IMO.

Yes the underage protagonist is sexualized to hell and back but hear me out, she's actually fairly loving badass? she quite kicks some rear end from time to time? so it's like not problematic at all?

From the New World is criminally underrated and it's also the perfect honeypot, because there's tons of anime tubers who complain about the ritualized homosexuality in the anime being as awkward and unsexy as possible (like actual irl adolescent relationships), while preferring the manga which is just straight porn.

A lot of people hate it because they can't recognize that it's a story about growing up as a First Worlder who acclimates to their society even knowing how hosed up it is - and the racialized colonial subjects who rise up against the order you ultimately benefit from are the only real heroes. The historical development of imperialism informs the context of the entire story.

It's one of a handful of stories where the source novel is elevated by the anime while the manga is complete trash. Do not read or even look at the manga, I'm begging you.
