Even if they have just BARELY enough consciousness to process this, there is no way that these fish don’t exit those tubes believing in some kind of higher power that has a special plan for them.

I mean, considering that most anadromous fish like salmon die shortly after arriving and spawning, and their brains are already half-cooked from the homing impulse anyways, thankfully, they'll never develop organized religion.

The tube got them up the hill so they can have sex and die. What higher power do they really need?

It’s going to get transmitted to their children via *~genetic magic~* and the kids are going to grow up thinking the vested pink things from above will load them into a gently caress tube and fire them into o-town, they’ll try to figure out a system of ethics and morality that governs the seemingly random uplifting of fish to cum heaven, kill one another, yadda yadda yadda, next thing you know radicalized dories half a world away are suicide bombing the great coral reef

they'll try to build the tube outta rocks and sticks at most, and because fish hatch from eggs there's no myth of birth our rebirth like in human society, the tube is essentially heaven's gate and they're being beamed up to a comet so that they can bang to the maximum

One cyberpunk adjacent thing that's kinda hosed up is the Cambridge Declaration, where scientists agreed that almost all animals are sentient.

quote:

The absence of a neocortex does not appear to preclude an organism from experiencing affective states. Convergent evidence indicates that non-human animals have the neuroanatomical, neurochemical, and neurophysiological substrates of conscious states along with the capacity to exhibit intentional behaviors. Consequently, the weight of evidence indicates that humans are not unique in possessing the neurological substrates that generate consciousness. Non-human animals, including all mammals and birds, and many other creatures, including octopuses, also possess these neurological substrates.

The basis for consciousness predates the radiation of invertebrates. If you crush a bug you're not just breaking a biomachine you're killing an actually living being. If an AI had an analogous substrate it also could be assumed to be sentient.

Seems like a good thing to acknowledge that even if it doesn't change your behavior or sit at the front of your mind all the time. It is possible plants or plant+mycelium networks have consciousness, currently we have no evidence they do not possess a consciousness and mild evidence showing they might.

I've been told by some fishologists that salmon actually like doing all that work to swim up the fish ladders. Apparently someone has measured activity in the closest thing to a pleasure center in the salmon brain when they are struggling mightily to jump upstream.

Sentience is meaningless, only sapience matters. It's not enough to intentionally perform a task, you must have the will to do something you know is stupid and wrong just because you can.

while the va is definitely at fault, i used to work for that company and the policy was "write off anything the va won't pay for because denying prosthetics to soldiers is an image nightmare and it will piss off the va" so this is entirely on them. the va grossly overpays for prosthetics, so it all evens out in the end anyways. the most hosed up thing is that they gave him his legs back but are refusing to adjust them properly until they get paid, and as an amputee i can tell you that unless they're adjusted your prosthetics are useless. good way to injure yourself tho

I used to work for Hanger, the company this guy got his prosthetics from (and that subsequently repo’d them). The labyrinth that is our health system is so insane that it sometimes takes nearly a year of behind the scenes applications, appeals, reviews, etc for basic services such as knee braces to get paid for by insurance companies. Medicare is by far the best payer, but because they don’t cover everything there are still fringe cases where no one is sure they’ll get paid and don’t want to provide services without some sort of preauthorization. Pretty hosed up this guy delivered the braces and then took them back.

I ended up leaving the medical field because unfortunately poo poo like this, where someone desperately needs medical services but can’t get them, happen all the loving time.
