How many skill save cards should I be looking to bank for every possible issue that may come up, 4 or so?

toasterwarrior posted:How many skill save cards should I be looking to bank for every possible issue that may come up, 4 or so? In the starter ships at least, I’ve found that 2 skill save cards in each ship check is reliable enough for short runs, as the other abilities available also help trips go smoothly. Once the crew starts gaining a fair chunk of levels, pick up another skill save or 2 in categories that you notice failures most often. I haven’t played the game for about 6 months and wasn’t very good at it to begin with, so caveat emptor. As for mission skill saves, I’d say focus on a couple of things like intel gathering and diplomacy, and get a boatload of skill saves for those so you can have a reliable income stream.

Another question: is it totally fine to drop crew once you go past 200% on a skill and you can't squeeze out any more space for component upgrades? I have 6 Gunners and I can't really find the space for more weapons on this Vengeance Class (2x LV7 Torpedoes and one large Plasma Cannon for as much crippling and crew damage I can spam at 4 range before I go in for boarding spam), and my ship is already rating at 220% Gunnery. If I'm not really finding any use for all those talents, I'm probably better off letting go of some Gunners and just shoring up another skill I'm deficient in, right?

is there a way to make educated guess on what goods are in demand on a planet besides knowing the mining to industry to population cycle?

Stairmaster posted:is there a way to make educated guess on what goods are in demand on a planet besides knowing the mining to industry to population cycle? Yeah. Generally speaking, demand tracks the logical interests. Tradeways like things like guns, starship parts, crystals. Refineries like ores and crystals. Industrial likes metals and alloys. Populations like clothes, artifacts. Mining likes mining gear, booze, clothes. Farming like farming gear and poop.

If you've been there before, the atlas (which isn't limited to being local anymore!) that shows all the zones in the system (globe icon) will tell you what they're selling, what they're looking for (A-F), and the trade law, as of the last time you were there (which it also tells you). If not, then Dalaram's post is more detailed than mine would have been.

I haven't really played since just a bit before the carrier update, but now that they wrapped up the 2.6 updates, I guess it's a good time to jump back in and have my gaming be consumed by this for November?

You could always buy your friends ST:F. They also have a Kickstarter for their next game coming up in a few months. The best thing is since it’s the Trese Bros, I am completely confident that ST:F will still get plenty of work and updates given they’re still updating and adding to games even older than it.

When the subject of RPGs came up in the official Discord the brothers did confirm they played a lot of Traveller back in the day, it is a very strong and direct influence on Star Traders.

Cyber Knights is cool because it's a cyberpunk game set in New Boston and one of the factions is the Fenian Brotherhood. There are other factions, but why would anyone want to work for the Yakuza or Generic Megacorp #45 instead of the Fenians? I hope they're still the 'starter' faction in the new Cyber Knights. Also, if anyone hasn't played the old version of Cyber Knights, it's a free mobile game (there's an Elite upgrade for like 4 bucks, so you can give the Trese Brothers a little money that way), and it plays a lot like the Genesis Shadowrun game (except combat is turn-based) - do jobs for your Fenian connectors (fixers/johnsons) to make money to get better gear to do bigger jobs to make more money, etc. It's a good mobile game, and I'm excited to see how the new version will turn out.

I've been playing 6-7 years in one and its a perfectly serviceable ship still after steady upgrades. Also the bigger ships are better suited for combat or hauling cargo. They're slower and eat more fuel costs so they might not be as well suited for couriering type missions. Sulphagnist fucked around with this message at 14:55 on Dec 25, 2019 |

I just started to play this game and it´s really goddamn overwhelming at the first glance. I´ve had a quick look at some LP´s of this game and read this thread but since the game seems to be updated quite frequently I just want to know what is a good character to go for my first playthough (or until I meet my horrible demise)?

Note that this is not like "the best captain", but it's one that is a sort of generically capable build that is decent at enough things to get you through the intro quests and get your feet under you. A: Experience (a class like diplomat, military officer, merchant will help a lot with rep management, which is one of the trickiest things early on) B: Attributes (its easier to create a non-combat captain, so I'd say pump WIS and CHA mostly - if you really want to send your captain into fights DEX and WIS) C: Ship (take either the Paladin Cruiser or the Frontier Liner, both of which are good all-rounder ships) D: Skills (pick up some stuff that will help you with whatever playstyle you want to focus on - if you see yourself as more of a diplomat or trader negotiate and intimidation are good, command and tactics are basically always useful, explore if you want to be an explorer) E: Contacts (any contact that offers introductions is helpful here) Start as De Valtos, Cadar, Moklumnue, Rychart or Zenrin because the others get fairly irritating starting locations on the default map.

Yeah, when all my crew is like level 5 then I don't have an activity log that screams red and -health at me while I'm doing legal Lyft for mah boi Big Prince Feyn. The ship just works. The optimal thing path is to chuck experience to E so you can leverage high attributes in the mid game. Or skills. I forget the math behind which is better number, but I chose attributes a long time ago. I dunno, the mechanics kinda wash over me sometimes.

Of course, you can make an entire play style sing right out of the gate with high skills, not to mention a captain on a small ship needs skill bonuses in the beginning due to a small officer pool. If I’m going for the long haul, I set attributes and skills to A and B, in either order.

Had a hilarious loss the other day. Went with a merchant flying a z grade ship. Ripped the armor off first chance I got, need guns to debuff foes long enough to flee. It turns out being a Monklumee[sic] trader on the default map makes a crazy amount of money trading, something like +25% pure profit. I was trying for the "meet x contacts in 2 years" so I went with doing missions for just the prince himself. But he just kept sending me to the next system over to deliver legal documents, perfect for running stuff from a factory to the prince's farm. So by the time the case is closed I have a cool million in the bank and a contact that will hook me up with a Titan for that discounted price. I was all set to cruise the galaxy for promising specialists to fill my half empty ship. The first ship I encountered was a Xeno. That was the end of that run.

I've gotten back into this game for the past few weeks on, of all things, my Android phone. Things are clicking for me that never did before - crew combat, talent picks, captain builds, contact management. Trying to get a handle on ship combat and that's getting better too. Thinking about dice pools and what skills impact what action is a real rabbit hole to go down but necessary to not feel at the mercy of the void (the void has no mercy). I need to get better about not overextending myself and saying "no" to missions and other opportunities I'm not equipped for. I've yet to survive more than 4 years or so because I see the $$$ for doing a mission that involves exploring or boarding a bounty hunter and getting my poo poo handed to me as a result. This game is the best "space captain" simulator anyone has ever made it you can put the time into learning it. The Dominions 4 of space RPGs, if you will. I wish the game made it easier to tell who died after a dicey ship battle. If you click through the screen after combat, as far as I can tell, you only have deduction left to figure out why you suddenly have 4 empty bunks to fill.

2 things to check for that. There is a summary screen as one of the tabs after battle. You know the screen where you use your after battle talents and ransom enemy ships? I think it is the rightmost option at the top, with the battle log in the middle. This also works after boarding attacks. Next is the captains log. Go to the ship screen in the bottom right during stellar travel. Then check those bottom three buttons for the captains log. All the little skull and crossbones entries commemorate your dead crew. Doesn't tell you what talent gaps you now have, but hey.
