I move to adopt the curlicue axis denoting exponential or disjoint axises because it seems harder to hide than logarithmic scaling or disjoint breaks.

Somfin posted:The "divination, telepathy, a gut feeling" source wasn't an indication I feel like the post you're responding to was sarcastic since the "divination, telepathy, gut feeling" thing is pretty obvious but on the other hand, if you look at graphs that have been posted here that were created to be 100% serious, it does kind of come down to needing to explicitly write "this is a parody!" on your graph at this point. Because I mean, look at PragerU graphs - just being "obviously bad" doesn't meant they weren't being 100% serious.

Poe's law:quote:Poe's law is an adage of Internet culture stating that, without a clear indicator of the author's intent, it is impossible to create a parody of extreme views so obviously exaggerated that it cannot be mistaken by some readers for a sincere expression of the views being parodied.

poe's law is overapplied on the modern internet. often there is an irony level gap, based on a combination of humorless over-credulity and/or the result of context collapse

Ugh, this graph is terrible. I can't believe that people make graphs like this and expect to be taken seriously. At least the axes are labeled, but there's no indication of units or amount, and there's no source.

Poe's Law isn't about how it's impossible to tell the difference between irony or parody and the real thing. It's about how there will always be someone who misses the loving joke.

No, it's about how there's no position so obvious and extreme and stupid that no-one will ever die on that hill- if they determine that it's on "their side," someone will defend it

Counterpoint: Gentlepersons, we live in a world where there is a sizeable community of people who believe that the earth is flat and is being portrayed as round so as not to embarrass generations of scientists. Gut instinct is unofficially accepted as evidence in court when presented by police or "experts." This thread has presented authentic graphs with concepts including artistic merit as quantifiable values. The thought that someone believes divination and gut instinct are reliable sources for determining a trend is an entirely reasonable conclusion. Poe's law stands. Next case please, bailiff.
