I just mentioned it because a few times in this thread people have said it's pointless to remaster video tape. But it's just not true. That Beatles 1+ blu-ray has some good examples of this.

At bare minimum, Blu-ray specs allow for superior encoding of even SD-based material due to AVC being miles ahead of MPEG2 and the native 16x9 resolution. Not to mention that DVD taps out at 9 mbps while Blu-ray's limit is 40mbps. And then there's uncompressed or lossless audio. And of course, the superior physical quality of Blu-ray with the anti-scratch coating compared to DVD.

It makes me sad how underseen and underappreciated Duck, You Sucker! is because it's not just a really good movie but I think it's actually better than the Man With No Name trilogy. I'm not even saying those movies are bad because they obviously aren't, that's just how much I like Duck, You Sucker!. I still haven't seen Once Upon a Time in the West.

Kino Lorber just confirmed they just inked another deal with Universal for about another 200 titles ranging from 1916-2016 and there might be some television series included. They've posted before interest in stuff like Columbo, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and even the Walter Lantz cartoons. Covering 100 years of film means they probably got the dozen or so silents Universal has restored over the last few years, including the '16 version of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Also, in other news, Warner Bros. and Universal will be merging their home entertainment divisions. Sounds like a big initiative to put out physical media. Could be a big deal since Universal might be taking over distribution of MGM from Fox when their contract is up. Shout! Factory has a birthday sale for John Carpenter films: https://www.shoutfactory.com/page/l...BM_CvJeMINcLI-0 Also, if you haven't checked the Criterion thread, here's their April slate: The Grand Budapest Hotel The Cremator Me and You and Everyone We Know Destry Rides Again Army of Shadows (Blu/DVD reprint - same edition released in 2010)

I love streaming for the ability to discover films, but accessibility is a huge concern (I watched Runaway Train on Netflix once, and now, all that is available is an OOP disc from Twilight Time). That's what I find scariest about streaming. One day, a film is gone and there's no legitimate way to view it.

There are a few Netflix exclusive movies I would love to own but they will probably never release. Dolemite is My Name, Death Note, Ballad of Buster Scruggs. Maybe they just have a timed exclusivity, but I’m not gonna hold my breath.

Do they have any of their original content available on their DVD service? Like, can you rent Stranger Things from it?

I can see them giving Buster Scruggs to Criterion; Roma is coming out next month and folks seem to think The Other Side Of The Wind is a sure thing, so they seem open to putting out more prestige-y fare. Plus it would seem to benefit both sides - Criterion gets a new source of titles to license, and Netflix gets a way to get their brand in front of potential new subscribers. trdn89 fucked around with this message at 05:43 on Jan 16, 2020 |

There's usually a period of exclusivity, and then once that passes, they might do disc releases. Funny enough, I can buy Orange is the New Black on Amazon video. It looks like it was all released on Blu-ray as well.

Marriage Story is already confirmed by Noah Baumbach. The Other Side of the Wind is 99% certain since there IS a physical release in the works, but nothing else is known besides that it'll probably include Mark Cousins' documentary The Eyes of Orson Welles, which Janus distributes. Though, I can see Criterion perhaps holding it over to 2021 so they can do some sort of 80th Anniversary thing for Welles and Citizen Kane.

The original Xtro has some extremely goofy fun moments and a genuinely creepy alien, but there’s a whole lot of extremely boring filler in that movie. I bought a really nice region-free blu set a couple years ago, but I’ve only watched it twice.

Xtro 3 is special because a) the alien looks extremely cool and goofy. Like if ET was really really pissed, and possibly possessed by Pazuzu, b) I'd say maybe 80% of the dialog is a bizarre variation of the F-word. I haven't seen it in about 20 years, but I remember reading a profile of the movie in Fangoria, then renting it on day one when it hit video stores and having a blast watching it.

The Wikipedia page for the Xtro director is funny in that whoever wrote it for him tried to really make a point that he moved on to bigger and better things after Xtro when the opposite is true. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Bromley_Davenport quote:Bromley-Davenport remained within his own low-budget franchise for one more film, and hired Daryl Haney to write the screenplay for Xtro 3: Watch the Skies (1995). This began an ongoing professional relationship between himself and Haney that ultimately changed the direction of Bromley-Davenport's career, culminating in a trio of films that are arguably his finest works: Life Among the Cannibals (1996), Erasable You (1998) and the true story Mockingbird Don't Sing (2001), starring Sean Young.
