It's a pretty giant MMO but it is true that FF14 does imply rape probably more than any other game I've played.
I was going to say "any other FF" but actually it comes up a lot despite it basically never being said!

An NPC down the line important enough to be voiced in a few cutscenes gets a backstory where he mentions his mother is from an occupied territory and she "didn't exactly welcome my father if you know what I mean" and then it's mentioned that she went nuts and tried to cut out any signs of his mixed parentage.

Maybe the most :wtf: example is in the Postmoogle quests that are optional and are mostly a lighthearted back on those mostly unimportant NPCs you probably talked to once or twice during the base game and forgot about... except for one of them dumping on you the story of two catgirls, one of whom sold herself on the street to protect and provide for the younger one. And then joined the local catpeople outlaws, a condition of joining being a part of the catman leaders harem. And when you try to convince her to leave she's like "hmm OK for the sake of my sister" and then two steps from town, a town guard says "hey you didn't you just stab my buddies for their money two weeks ago" and then he's run off (or killed? I forget) by the outlaw leader catguy. And then she's like "oh I could never leave you" and is pulled back into this abusive relationship.
And so her younger sister swears that one day she'll get powerful enough to kill that guy.

Your hero watches all this happen and does not intervene in any way.

Yeah, the audio cues are great. That hefty wood bending sound when you've hooked a whopper, and then the extra loud ding on an HQ catch before you even see it's HQ.

FFXIV's crafting/gathering professions, especially with the shadowbringers updates, are great examples of how to do crafting/gathering right. Instanced gathering nodes that noone else can see, generally in a tight grouping/triangle of 2x2/3 for each type, that one can farm endlessly if they so desire. And with the crafting, there is a palpable sense of progression as one gets better gear and more skills to approach different types of craftables.

Also surprisingly relaxing with a controller and something to half watch in the background.

In Hades, your character's goal is to leave Tartarus while being thwarted by the big guy himself. Every time you die, you go back to the House of Hades; there you can find Cerberus whom you can deliver many pets and scritches. Seeing as you will die many times, you get many chances to give many scritches to a good boy.

When you get to the last gateway out of Hell, you'll find Cerberus waiting for you, ready to defend to the last...

Except your character refuses to fight him, and instead just bribes him with doggy treats to get out.

I figured I'd pick up Quantum Theory as it seemed interesting and it was only £2, and it is definitely that so far. It's got a neat idea involving moving cover which initially only appeared as a brief thing in the tutorial then disappeared for a while, but has returned with a vengeance in a really hard sequence riding a giant worm up the middle of the tower. They took into account how loose the aiming is too (which is my biggest problem with the game) as you don't have to shoot the enemies in this section which would be a nightmare as everything is constantly moving, because there are mines everywhere so a lucky shot can take out the worst enemies fairly quickly.

Also there was a pretty kickass sequence at the start when first breaking into the tower where you need to take out it's defenses and there are lasers and cannons firing everywhere, which makes for a fun spectacle.

Nioh is like this. Characters speak Japanese for 99% of the game with English subtitles, but others sometimes speak English and it's played straight- as in they're actually speaking English, not MGS3 style "your Russian is pretty good".

Edit: which ties into a nice touch of characterization I liked, come to think of it. In the game you play as historical figure William Adams, who is given the name Anjin Miura in Japan because it's easier for the locals to pronounce (and he's a ship captain). Even after everyone else starts calling him Sir Anjin, bro 4 life Hanzo continues to call him William even in Japanese dialogue.

This reminds me of how in Street Fighter X Tekken, Mega Man is a playable character...but it's the Mega Man from the box art of Mega Man 1.

That joke made a lot of people upset but I maintain it was great. It probably would've gone over better if the Mega Man series wasn't near-abandoned back then.

Too bad the game was bad. Tekken characters in street fighter style could've been a lot of fun, and its failure basically killed Tekken X Steet Fighter.

Something amusing I realised since watching an LP of Grand Theft Auto 4 - Bernie's house may be a straight-man's caricature of how a gay house would look with it's sexy cop paintings and vibrant colours, but Nico and Roman's varying apartments are also a gay man's caricature of how a straight guy's apartment would look, run down, squalid and with pornographic titty posters everywhere. In no real house would someone decorate it with porn, it makes it impossible to have people over without it being awkward
As a college humour video put it years ago, Roman Bellic is FLAMING straight.

Rockstar tried so hard to make the apartment a bachelor thing they overshot. I honestly can't tell if that was the joke or not, given that Bernie was the best they could do with a gay character at the time.

AssCreed in general are pretty good with stuff like that. In AssCreed 3 for example native characters would talk In their native language. I like Ubisoft policy about being AS historical accurate as possible while also pointing out that it is fiction and some things are added because they're cool.

He's like, two and a half jokes in one, which would have been fine by themselves, but kinda bump into each other in one package.

1. Hey, it's bad box-art Mega Man! That's pretty funny!
1.5. It's hilariously wrong Mega Man, like if he was really poorly adapted into a toy line and comic book in the eighties. that's a fun angle, and one that actually jives well with Street Fighter conceptually since that almost did happen there.
2. Hey, remember that weird nostalgic figure? Let's pick up on him thirty years later and find out what a loser he is! Nintendo did basically a whole game of this, Captain Rainbow, so it's got legs.

1 and 1.5 could go pretty well together, but 1 and 2 together blurs the line of recognizability (which it kinda needs since it's not like 'bad box-art Mega Man' is is a universally-recognized figure) while feeling pretty mean-spirited to the Mega Man fans they're supposed to be appealing to.

Zinkraptor
Apr 24, 2012

The "boxart" for megaman 9 and 10 did something almost similar in a cool way.

It is missing a crucial element, though, which is that the early NA and EU boxarts for Mega Man games were hideous - even when they started drawing Mega Man a bit more on-model, you still ended up with stuff like this. While capturing that "we need to make this game look cool for hip U.S. kids and also I have not actually seen the game but merely had it described to me in 20 words or less" feel, it's just a bit too competently made.

At this point, I think the joke might be overdone and dead, but I would like to see cool silver EU Mega Man sometime:

He's overshadowed by US MM1, but I think he's got his own appeal. Also I dig that angry blob with cat ears near his left shoulder.

Yeah, it really was the worst of both worlds. Everyone speaking English is silly, but it's one of those conventions that we just accept as being done for the benefit of the audience. Having Lara speak to people in English and having them speak back in Quecha was worse, since it implied that both characters were bilingual but refused to speak the same tongue for... reasons?

Depends on the people you associate with. I'm rarely around people who would have porn up on walls, but yes, there are still many people who have porn up on walls. I was just around them more in my early college years.

To add a little thing, while I'm not playing it right now, I loved how in Final Fantasy XIV, when you get a particular mount in ARR, it starts playing some very recognizable music. You get a magitek mount at the end of the base game, and it plays the overworld (Terra's) theme from Final Fantasy 6. I would often have the mount music turned off so that the ambient music would play instead, but I needed to turn it back on for a while for that.
