chitoryu12 posted:Film Crit Hulk did a really good essay on the problem with JJ Abrams' writing. He's obsessed with the "Mystery Box" theory, where he believes that the mystery is infinitely more compelling than actually knowing the answer, so he crafts interesting mysteries without really thinking about what they're about. When he made Lost, it was literally nothing but the pilot; he just created a bunch of random poo poo that he thought would make for an interesting setup and filmed it. Mission Impossible 3 was his first big shot at a franchise. He literally named the McGuffin "The Rabbits Foot" and made it so obviously nothing that the movie loses all sense of tension and realism despite having the best series villain in Philip Seymour Hoffman. It's a skill that Tarantino has that JJ can't quite emulate.

I remember when I saw "Into Darkness" with all of the really awkward "doesn't quite get it" fanservice and thought that Abrams was just contemptuous of Trekkies (understandable, tbh). Then I saw Rise of Skywalker--a franchise he demonstrably gives way more of a gently caress about--and realized that he's so broken and marketing-oriented that he's "just that way" in all the worst senses of the word.

I think JJ just watched Ronin too many times and loves the mystery box.

Danny Devito can never be out of his prime. He's the one man on the planet that's 100% comfortable with his body.

The most depressing thing about this is that there's enough young adults who were 7-11 years old when the last book came out still haven't read another book for that to be a successful class. Haven't young people latched onto some other dumbass thing yet?

They have. Potter just has uncommon staying power. But there have been other popular YA series like Hunger Games.
