Setting aside Wil Wheaton getting completely owned on twitter and leaving and never coming back because of his ties to Chris Hardwick, what was the thing that set off this style of show where you have a show immediately after the show that just aired, just to "explain" it and talk about it?

Because it seems like the most braindead thing imaginable, next to the youtube videos that already do that for you.

They are super cheap to make. That's the reason.

makes sense. sam mendez is defo too cowardly too go after the real murderers and criminals. the whole premise of some inbred fat noble officer caring enough about 1500 men to send people into danger to save them is completely absurd. no officer would've blinked an eye at losing 1500 people.

A real WWI story needs to be entirely about pointless death and cruelty inflicted on your own allies. So have the colonel order a squad to relay the vital message since the wires got broken, but then some rear echelon psycho arrests them and accuses them of deserting. The protagonists are about to be firing squadded, but get saved by German infiltrators who snipe the officer etc. Just a series of random and pointless events, and when they eventually get to the destination the general reveals that the 1500 casualties were part of the plan, since there is no other way to exhaust German munitions otherwise.

They could steal a train at some point, that would be cool.

While you're at it make my Wonder Woman adaptation where she fights for the Ottomans, because she only considers autocratic monarchies valid and the British tried to colonize her island.

Today I fell down a rabbit hole of reactionary nerd media youtube channels, because part of me hates myself and is addicted to rage. They all think that Picard is going to suck because Patrick Stewart is a socialist who wants to stay in the EU and because "woke" media is too preachy and continuity errors.

I think Picard will likely suck for the same reasons you do, but I can't find any youtube channels that agree with me. I don't have any wider point except that this is depressing.

i only just realized that picard is supposed to be a sequel story to next generation or more specifically nemesis and the events referenced in the jj abrams time travel reboot i had been assuming it was a prequel series

the apparent complete unwillingness of anyone to explain what the plot of this show is going to be beyond that extremely bare bones background when its coming out in a week is not exactly setting off my optimism detector

The Picard Show could kill off Picard the lamest way possible, and it'll probably still be a step up from Nemesis as an ending for the TNG generation.

Just lack of communication is a universal thing in all wars and especially WWI. Have a unit that advanced a little too far and a little too fast for the timetable. Have an officer realize they're in an area where they're not supposed to be and they're about to be subjected to the mother of all artillery barrages and their pigeons are dead and their phone lines are cut (because it's WWI). So they send back a runner. He goes through all sorts of convoluted war adventures but gets back to HQ and gets his message in just a little too late. The end of the movie is our hero on a faraway hill watching his mates get blown up by high explosive in a horrible mistake. He's helpless, the system is helpless, his friends are helpless, and no one is really at fault. Also he's perversely happy because by chance he's somehow alive when they're all dead. War is just hosed up like that.

I’d like to see this lighthearted romp of a ww1 book made into a movie: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/45878. it’s a firsthand account of a German landing party that is left by their ship on an island in the South Pacific. if you want spoilers (for a 105-year-old story), the author is Hellmuth von Mücke who has one of the driest senses of humor I’ve ever read and here’s a snippet:

The Englishmen on the island were little pleased at the prospect, and begged permission, in case it should come to a battle, to withdraw to one of the other islands. Their request was granted.
Accompanied by two of my signal men, I now took my station on the roof of the highest house to watch the fight between the two cruisers. As a whole, the Englishmen showed little interest in the conflict that was going on but a few thousand meters distant from the island. Other matters seemed to claim their attention. With an ingratiating smile one of them stepped up to our officers, who were head over ears in work down on the beach, and asked:
“Do you play tennis?”
It was an invitation which, under the circumstances, we felt compelled to decline.

And everyone speaks in a great mixture of accents and dialects, there is no stupid-rear end "yarr me mateys yo ho shiver me timbers" movie pirate talk anywhere to be found.

Great sets, costumes and casting. And so much eye candy for all orientations, if that's your thing.

Star Trek is supposed to be preachy though, like that time they unfroze an 80's banker and told him his whole reason for living was bullshit or the time they had Mark Twain onboard and told him they aren't imperialist monsters in the future or that DS9 two parter everyone shares memes about now because it's about to become true

They need to do the modern equivalent of that to actually be relevant but they won't cause the people making it are too rich and too scared of all the chud fans in the comments sections not ragebuying their product. Instead they're like "but we added gay people now, please clap" about 20 years after that would have been a thing worth congratulating by itself and wondering why their show isn't a cultural juggernaut
