Trump administration refuses to release all available aid to Puerto Rico despite earthquakes, citing ‘corruption’ concerns
nydailynews.com/Jan 09, 2020
'President Trump’s Department of Housing and Urban Development was supposed to start disbursing $9.7 billion in aid to Puerto Rico in September as part of a congressional allocation to beef up natural disaster readiness following the devastating hurricanes that battered the island in 2017 and killed nearly 3,000 people.

But HUD has to date only released about $1.5 billion of those funds, and a senior agency official said Thursday that the remainder of the relief cash won’t be released anytime soon despite a string of earthquakes that rocked the island this week and left thousands of residents without power."

Senate Has Votes to Pass Limits on Trump’s Iran War Power, Likely Drawing a Veto
nytimes.com/Jan. 14, 2020/Updated 9:47 p.m. ET
'A measure that would force President Trump to win congressional authorization before taking further military action against Iran now has enough Republican support to pass the Senate, a key Democratic senator said Tuesday.

The senator, Tim Kaine of Virginia, said at least four Republicans would break ranks to pass a bill to curtail Mr. Trump’s war-making powers, underscoring growing dissatisfaction with the president’s Iran strategy among members of his own party. It would be a rebuke to the president as his impeachment trial gets underway and will most likely set up the seventh veto of his presidency.

The Republican defectors “were discouraged that the attitude that was being communicated to us was that Congress was an annoyance,” Mr. Kaine said. “After that, they came to me and we have been able to make some amendments.”

Senator Susan Collins of Maine, one of the Republicans who will support the measure, said in a statement that “Congress cannot be sidelined on these important decisions.” She said that although the resolution would continue to allow Mr. Trump to repel an imminent attack, “only the legislative branch may declare war or commit our armed forces to a sustained military conflict with Iran.”

Joining her in planning to vote with the Democrats were Senators Todd Young of Indiana, Mike Lee of Utah and Rand Paul of Kentucky.

Lawmakers have grown increasingly angry over Mr. Trump’s shifting justifications for a Jan. 3 strike that killed Maj. Gen. Qassim Suleimani, Iran’s most important general, and sent the two nations to the brink of war.'

Florida Republicans submit 4 anti-gay bills on last day to file
nbcnews.com/Jan. 15, 2020
"Seven Republican lawmakers in Florida filed anti-LGBTQ bills late Monday, just hours before the deadline to file new bills for the coming legislative session.

If passed, the bills would ban gender-affirming health care for transgender children, repeal municipal and county ordinances protecting LGBTQ workers, and legalize so-called gay conversion therapy in places that had banned the medically debunked practice.

The state lawmakers — Rep. Anthony Sabatini, Sen. Dennis Baxley, Rep. Bob Rommel, Sen. Joe Gruters, Rep Michael Grant, Sen. Keith Perry, and Rep. Byron Donalds — together introduced the four pieces of legislation, each with a companion bill in the House and the Senate."

Devin Nunes Now Remembers Call With Lev Parnas
thedailybeast.com/Jan. 15, 2020
'House Intelligence Committee Ranking Member Devin Nunes (R-CA) told Fox News on Wednesday night that he now remembers speaking on the phone with Lev Parnas, an associate of Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani actively involved in the Ukraine scheme at the heart of the president's impeachment.

Moments after Parnas told MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow that the president “knew exactly what was going on” with Ukraine, Fox News anchor Martha MacCallum asked Nunes about phone records that show he spoke to Parnas, noting he previously said he couldn’t “recall” having a phone conversation with the Giuliani henchman. Claiming that the information was “brand new” at the time and he just didn’t “recognize the name Parnas,” the pro-Trump congressman added that he was able to recall “where he was at the time” and now “remembered that call, which was very odd and random.”

Asked whether or not they spoke about former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch, Nunes asserted that the first time he “heard the name Yovanovitch was not until this impeachment sham started.”'

Trump, who wanted a TV legal team, is 'distracted' by impeachment trial, source says
cnn.com/January 18, 2020
'Donald Trump has appeared "distracted" by the impeachment trial that begins on Tuesday, according to a source close to the White House who speaks to the President regularly.

"Why are they doing this to me," the source quoted Trump as saying repeatedly, telling people around him Friday night at Mar-a-Lago that he "can't understand why he is impeached."

Trump has been telling associates and allies around him that he wanted a "high profile" legal team that can perform on television, the source said. It's simply who Trump is, the source continued, adding Trump loves having people who are on television working for him.
This in part may explain why Kenneth Starr and Alan Dershowitz were added to the legal team representing the President.'

Draft of McConnell's rules for trial still allows motion to dismiss
axios.com/1 hour ago
"Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is preparing a resolution that would leave room for President Trump's lawyers to move immediately to dismiss the impeachment charges if they so choose, according to Republican Sen. Josh Hawley.

Republican Senate leaders, including McConnell and Roy Blunt, the senior senator from Missouri, have already said members aren't interested in a vote to dismiss. And it seems unlikely that Trump's team would push for what would almost certainly be a losing vote — a move that could be seen as a sign of weakness at the outset of the trial."

In theory consolidate all our space warfare together. I'd assume spy satellites, satellite killers, defenses against satellite killers, keeping space clear of debris to prevent it and our stuff in space from colliding, whatever secret weapons we stashed in space in violation of international law and so on. I'll also assume it will succeed at this about as well as the air force handling our military aircraft does and that every branch will just continue doing their own poo poo with space anyways.

All of the same things that were done by USAF before. At least it's not something that Trump just made up, militarization of space seems to be ramping up atm. Russia, China and France have so far announced similar intentions. Russian air forces is officially called Aerospace Forces these days, they had a separate space force for a while but then figured it's inefficient to have a separate branch for just that. I feel that US should have done the same, but then they also have two naval branches...

The uniforms for Space Force should have taken all the good stuff from Navy Uniforms, maybe some practical updates here and there and some modernization. Then, to avoid confusion switch all the Navy Uniforms to a neon orange theme.

I'm glad they're not wasting a lot of time on fancy new uniforms for something as stupid as Space Force. I'd say time and money but knowing this admin you know someone's making out like a bandit.

Impeachment is ‘a Joke’ and ‘I Am Fighting It,’ Senator Hyde-Smith Says, Despite Swearing ‘Impartial Justice’ Oath
deepsouthvoice.com/January 19, 2020
'Mere days after swearing under oath to “do impartial justice according to the Constitution and laws” as a juror in Donald Trump’s impeachment trial, US Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, a Mississippi Republican, told supporters that she does not take the trial seriously and is actively “fighting it.”

“What (US House Speaker) Nancy Pelosi did in impeaching our president is no laughing matter, but even Democrats know it’s a joke,” Hyde-Smith tweeted to her followers on January 19. “Please RT this video and help me show why I am fighting the impeachment sham in the US Senate.”'

Senate Republicans Are Bathed in Shame
nytimes.com/Opinion/Jan. 18, 2020
"The impeachment trial of Donald John Trump began on Thursday when John Roberts, the chief justice of the Supreme Court, directed all of the senators to stand and raise their right hands. Ever since I can’t get two questions out of my head.

The first: How in God’s name — and it was in God’s name — can the Republicans who have already decided to acquit President Trump take a solemn oath to administer “impartial justice”? They’re partial to the core, unabashedly so, as their united march toward a foregone conclusion shows. A mind-meld this ironclad isn’t a reflection of facts. It’s a triumph of factionalism."
....
"My second question is really a subset, corollary or anagram of the first: How can Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz and Martha McSally stand to look at themselves in the mirror? I’m singling out these three somewhat randomly, but also because they’ve traveled particularly self-mortifying journeys away from self-respect.
Frank Bruni’s Newsletter

At a news conference on Thursday afternoon, Chuck Schumer, the leader of the Senate’s Democratic minority, said that when the chief justice walked into the chamber earlier that day, “I saw members on both sides of the aisle visibly gulp.” Schumer attributed that to the palpable “weight of history.” But for many of them, it probably had more to do with their awareness that they were about to sell out again, this time in circumstances that would be remembered long into the future."

Black Americans are deeply pessimistic about the country under Trump, whom more than 8 in 10 describe as ‘a racist,’ Post-Ipsos poll finds
washingtonpost.com/Jan. 17, 2020
"President Trump made a stark appeal to black Americans during the 2016 election when he asked, “What have you got to lose?” Three years later, black Americans have rendered their verdict on his presidency with a deeply pessimistic assessment of their place in the United States under a leader seen by an overwhelming majority as racist.

The findings come from a Washington Post-Ipsos poll of African Americans nationwide, which reveals fears about whether their children will have a fair shot to succeed and a belief that white Americans don’t fully appreciate the discrimination that black people experience."

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said cheering for soaring stock prices while wages stay low is 'inequality in a nutshell.' We made 6 charts to show why she's right.
businessinsider.com/Jan 15, 2020
"The US stock market has been on a tear for years, hitting several all-time highs in recent weeks. While this is certainly a good thing, the benefits of a booming stock market don't necessarily accrue to all Americans.

On Saturday, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez commented on an NBC News tweet noting the Dow Jones Industrial Average passing 29,000 for the first time:"

https://twitter.com/AOC/status/1216...mericans-2020-1

"Ocasio-Cortez has a point. As the following charts show, nearly half of American families own no stock at all, and the lion's share of stock market ownership belongs to households at the top of the wealth distribution."

GOP lawmaker’s extremely conservative sex ed bill is dead. She blames LGBTQ activism.
lgbtqnation.com/January 15, 2020
"Her bill banned discussions of homosexuality in schools, but she said it was "tainted" by the false "perception" that it was anti-gay.

Senate Bill 1082 — the legislation filed by Arizona Republican State Senator Sylvia Allen which sought to frighten teens about sex and ban any mention of homosexuality in classrooms — is basically dead, but Allen has pledged to try again very soon."

[Hope she's right. We ignore the fight against these wee "bs/propaganda" state bills at our peril, lest they move onto actual laws, and lest we miss the opportunity to point out loudly how stupid they are.]

A Reversal of Fortune, Perhaps?

HootTheOwl posted:

The whole planet is being drunk driven. Anyone who chooses to stay on this planet is gambling that the crash won't happen or won't affect them.

Except that people can't actually leave the planet in meaningful numbers. But they can leave individual countries that are especially poorly run or whose leadership is out of control. It's not really a gamble if no individual choice changing individual outcome is possible, just a chance of tragedy. I make this distinction because especially in dark times, it's a mistake not to carefully consider the ways individual agency can still improve individual outcomes. Since 2017, the global environment has reminded me of the leadup to World War 1 in many ways. In many ways it's different. But before WW1, the world was more globalized than ever and emigration to diverse places was available to a broader subset of the global (especially European) population than ever before. People were lulled into a belief that the empire system was stable (Crimean and Franco-Prussian wars yes, but no continental war since Napoleon) and there was free cultural exchange. It was tempting to believe war was behind. Sure, a threat of German, Russian and Austro-Hungarian militarism hung in the air. Now it's a Russian, Chinese and blind American nationalist threat with Iran and North Korea as possible flashpoints.

But the ease of movement before WW1 and 2 masked its consequentiality. Europeans lucky enough to have left the continent or moved to the Netherlands before WW1 or Sweden before WW2 got to survive the worst of the conflict. I doubt it will be as dire this time around, but I have a strong sense that national borders, what nation people end up in will once again wind up more consequential than people expect. This risk has been underestimated by society. This time it's less likely moving across borders in wartime will be impossible so much as it will be far better to be an established citizen with a life already built in a nice neutral country when conflict breaks out.

Kellyanne Conway Claims Martin Luther King Would Be Against Trump Impeachment
thedailybeast.com/Jan. 20, 2020
'“I’ve held my opinion on it for a very long time, but when you see the articles of impeachment that came out, I don’t think it was Dr. King’s vision to have Americans dragged through a process where the president is not going to be removed from office, is not being charged bribery, extortion, high crimes and misdemeanors,” she continued.

After declaring that anyone who cares for the phrase “and justice for all” should appreciate that the president has a “full-throttle defense” when it comes to impeachment, Conway concluded by linking herself with MLK.

“I, this morning, was reading some of the lesser-known passages by Dr. King and I appreciate the fact that we as a nation respect him by giving him his own day,” she proclaimed.

“I’m happy to share a birthday with this day,” Conway concluded.

'A famous anecdote encapsulates Grant's unflinching attitude to temporary setbacks and his tendency for offensive action. Sometime after midnight, Sherman encountered Grant standing under a tree, sheltering himself from the pouring rain and smoking one of his cigars, while considering his losses and planning for the next day. Sherman remarked, "Well, Grant, we've had the devil's own day, haven't we?" Grant looked up. "Yes," he replied, followed by a puff. "Yes. Lick 'em tomorrow, though."'

Most Americans Want the Rich to Pay Higher Taxes, According to Every Poll Everywhere
msn.com/1 day ago
"We may live in polarized times, but there’s one belief that Americans of all races, genders, and political persuasions can get behind: Tax the Rich!"
....
"Survey after recent survey confirms, quite simply, that most people think the richest Americans should pay more in taxes. The concept seems to have only gained more support since the passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, which has disproportionally benefitted the richest American taxpayers, as well as some of the world’s biggest corporations. And we are in an election year, of course, so arguments about the relative fairness of the tax system and whether the rich pay enough in taxes are bound to pop up and grow even more heated in the months ahead."

Why aren't Democrats making life miserable for vulnerable Republicans on impeachment?
nbcnews.com/Jan. 21, 2020
"As it turns out, they’ve put little to no pressure so far on vulnerable GOP senators like Cory Gardner, R-Colo., Martha McSally, R-Ariz., Susan Collins, R-Maine, and even Joni Ernst, R-Iowa.

Indeed, according to our ad trackers at Advertising Analytics, there are 11 impeachment-themed TV ads airing across the country right now, and all 11 are by Republicans and GOP groups.

Not a single one is by Democrats putting pressure on Republicans.

If the shoe were on the other foot — say a President Hillary Clinton facing a Senate impeachment trial — we’re fairly certain we’d see GOP ads directed at Doug Jones in Alabama, Gary Peters in Michigan and (probably) Kyrsten Sinema in Arizona.

So why haven’t Democrats tried to pressure GOP senators? Especially in the month since the House passed their impeachment articles against Trump?

Democrats might have the overall facts on their side. And they have a slight majority of Americans supporting Trump’s conviction and removal, according to yesterday’s CNN poll.

But they’ve yet to make life miserable for the Cory Gardners, Martha McSallys and Susan Collinses.

And that makes it much easier for Mitch McConnell to win on process."
