If you don’t see every type of computer every day it might not make sense but for example look up the ANCIENT dell d600 laptop charger on amazon or wherever. They used that same connector end for over 2 decades at least. Now they are still round but much smaller diameter (and often 45 watts) and they SUCK. The batteries go bad, the motherboards stop recognizing charger and battery, it’s just lovely.

There is a much smaller one for the really thin machines, but the Latitudes we use still have the same plug as the docks and older machines (6200 series) that we still have hanging around. Which means anyone who loses their compact travel charger gets the 130W BRICK for the docks, since that’s what we have extra.
Lenovo recently changed to USB-C charging only, and I had to buy extra spare chargers for the dingleberries that leave theirs at a conference.

Actual AI stuff, sorta: two new tires on the Crown Vic, because I let the right front run low, apparently, and hosed it up on the inside corner. Only found that out when I pulled the tire to take it and have it patched. Thankfully, it was getting close to the wear bars anyway, about 4/32”. The left front is in much better shape, since it was replaced under road hazard not too long ago. Which I had another 18” rim to put it on as a spare.

My old boss who'd been with the company for over 15 years was forced into quitting after a move to all-remote work. I've been without a manager for six months now; we got an e-mail on Monday saying our mid-level management had selected a manager from outside the company. Not a single one of us has heard of or were permitted to interview/have a discussion with him before he was selected. Some of the guys on the team (not me!) have been on this team for 15, 20 years and were not consulted. Can't wait to find out how poorly he fits with the team.

Mine was promoted about a year ago and he was never right for the job. We're pretty sure he was told "hey, you're stepping down." And that's that.

I've often wondered about this. We keep people that want to stay ICs as ICs, but they make a lot less money than if they went in to management.

People are generally promoted until they are just incompetent at their job. Happens in all fields.

Johnny does awesome in his entry level job, get's promoted to a mid level job. Johnny does great in his mid level job, so gets promoted to his senior job. Johnny does great in his senior job, so gets promoted to jr management. Does decent in jr management, so promoted to a middle-management.

Finally gets into a position where he's not doing well, or at the very least no longer excelling. He either gets let go or, if everyone is lucky, gets put back into the last position that he held that he excelled at, but more likely than not stuck in the position that they are thoroughly mediocre at for ages. I've literally seen this happen so many times I can't count.

The worst thing is most seem to have this goal of getting promoted, both workers and management, and if someone is happy doing what they are doing it's looked down on as they are a slacker or not that bright.

People that know their limits are way better than people that don't and start blundering their way through poo poo they shouldn't be doing. I have a ton of respect for people that have been in what many would think are entry level, albeit very important positions, for many years, and do it well. Warehouse, shipping receiving positions in particular are underrated but can tank a company if not done well.

One of my childhood best friends that lives in WI is a Mechanical engineer became a manager of a team. He was "promoted" to it for the reasons like stated above in spite of him saying "I don't want to manage people" but he is a driven person and not socially retarded like most engineers. He is trying to get out of the position now because the petty personnel things he has to deal with is too much. He told me about an email he received from one of his underlings, the summation of which was "Earlier today on (date) ____ asked me what I did on my time off. I find this extremely inappropriate! ___ needs to keep to himself....please see that something is done"

Friggin wild man. Engineers are weird as hell.

In new podcasts I started enjoying - Anyone who was a fan of The Office I suggest you start giving a listen to Office Ladies. It is hosted by Jena Fischer and Angela Kinsey. They are going through a re-watch together, every episode and talking about how the show was produced. As one of the best shows ever made this is really a joy to listen through.

Probably number one reason why I should never be in management is that I would respond to that with "I'm not your mom. Stop being a pussy and tell the other guy to mind his own business if that's what you want", and to the other guy: "that guy is a being a prissy gently caress, don't ask him about his time off again. I don't want to hear the complaints."
Also, I trust no one to do the job right, and wouldn't delegate and would just do everything myself. Thankfully, no one has ever asked me to be a manager.

edit: showing up to Discount Tire at opening time (after ordering my tires on Saturday, and getting a call that they were in on Monday) proved fruitful. They had me out in under 45 minutes, and I was only 5 minutes late to work (normally 9:00 AM.)

in fairness our ICs are deep six figgies if they stick around but if you are in the management side the numbers don't start with 1

I was all set to fix caldillo (Mexican beef stew) today.... it's 78 degrees right now, that puts the kibosh on soups. Currently trying to see how well stew meat can be used for beef & broccoli instead (instant pot version). :sigh:

Also hopped on the bike for the first time in too long. Got a decent ~6 mile ride, Fitbit says my heart rate actually got into the low 130s. It's difficult for me to get it that high, between a beta blocker and ACE inhibitor. My legs feel like loving jello now. Need to ride a lot more often, damnit. But I rode from home to my favorite trail, rode a little bit of the trail, and rode back. Usually I drive to the trailhead and ride it almost to the end, then head back.

Stuff like that give Law Enforcement and enormous hard-on, so much so that before purchasing they tend to not fully research the product, and apparently neither does the manufacturer. You'd think that they would lock the SIMs, at the very least, not to mention a little more work on the attachment method.

My dad likes to call these sorts of schemes (also see traffic cops) "revenuers" and I think it's a good name. There's a not-insignificant portion of code/rules/law enforcement that exists only to perpetuate its own existence without actually bettering anything.

Rottweiler, while acting normally, started peeing blood last night, so I took him to the ER animal hospital (and of course he puked in the Raptor, thanks dog) - turns out he has no platelets and is a very sick dog. :( He's only 5. He stayed at the hospital and I spoke with them this AM, he didn't get worse overnight but will get an ultrasound and probably a chest x-ray today.

Apparently cancer, autoimmune disorder, or infection are the leading causes of this. We are having the worst luck with our dogs as of late. He did great recovering from TPLO surgery after the fire. Overall this dog does not have a hard life but whatever this is a kick in the teeth. After his leg surgery I signed him up for doggie health insurance so maybe that will help, tbd.
