Councils far and wide have cut the free civic amenities and the local cafe doesn't want to pick up the tab for people spending a penny if they aren't spending a few pounds first. That's in the most favourable evaluation of the situation. The public lav was a roof over the head of those who had no other place to go. It was a discreet location for the consumption of drugs. Someone with a business that can (maybe?) afford its business rates doesn't want this defunded council service displaced onto their property. Don't be fooled into thinking the facilities in the cafe are a "public" loo, it's a misleading name. The local cafe is a privately owned venue. Its owners and controllers have every right to determine the admissions to any part of the venue. In theory, if someone does trespass, they'd have every right to use reasonable and necessary force to drag the piss rebels out of the shitter. Cafes are not breaking the rules, but there's anger forming. People need to piss and poo poo and have somewhere to live or escape from life. A twitter profile has us take this fight to the "piss cop", someone who exercises their right to close a door they own. That's not really the problem, or the enemy, is it, though? There was once a publicly owned door to a bog, and that door has been closed by the ruinous decision to cut central grants to council budgets. You could stop people using drugs in public toilets by opening supervised injection sites, but that would require social solutions to social problems. The closure of most of the public toilets around here is just another symptom of the privatization of the common space and the war against the right to the city.

My local Centra had a junkie OD and die in their public free for all toilet. Thankfully didn't see this. My local chinese had a free for all toilet until two teenage girls went into it at the same time and came out giggling. They had both poo poo everywhere EXCEPT into the toilet. Unfortunately I was there at the time and saw and smelt it. They should put up those open toilets you see in Amsterdam.

Where she's hosed up is that while she's right, they weren't always this way. She's ignoring cause and effect and just framing it as a immediate present danger. But that's what politics is like now. Additionally, someone promising something is always going to have an advantage over someone promising nothing, even if that's less due to their winning and more their opponent losing by failing to inspire any enthusiasm at all. He's not saying that bigotry will disappear with economic parity or that there aren't any people who are just bigots regardless, but rather that redistribution will take much of the wind out of its sails and gives you a much better place to work from, which is hard to argue with.
