That's probably the types that Blair attempted to reach with tough on crime and tough on the causes of crime, but also the ones who got pissed off when the newspapers pointed out that Blair's new laws would also apply to them (and more importantly when everything kept getting worse economically).

Is there anyway of reaching them without going fascist? What are their anchors other than "everything's too soft now" and "things are different which is bad"?

That upper left quartile is (apparently) where a lot of people in the UK sit and the left needs something that speaks to them before somebody else does. There's no libertarian right base in the UK and a 'Singapore-on-Thames' Brexit has like 4% national popularity.

Tories were happy to (at least pretend to) move away from austerity to try to capture some of that. Labour should not be prepared to move away from liberty and tolerance for the same ends, but needs an economic message that works and some sort of platform that reaches them before others do.

Not true - activating non-voters is usually more effective, particularly with polarisation as severe as we're presently experiencing. Both got about 42% of the vote with about 67% turnout. Plenty of other fish in the sea, and left-wing parties tend to do better with higher turnout (one small evidence-point for that was that 2017 had significantly higher turnout than 2019).

ThomasPaine posted:

My bad, alienation is probably a better word than deprivation (though they often go hand in hand). Additionally, someone promising something is always going to have an advantage over someone promising nothing, even if that's less due to their winning and more their opponent losing by failing to inspire any enthusiasm at all.

In any case, I do think the tweet seriously misunderstands Bernie's position or reads it very uncharitably. He's not saying that bigotry will disappear with economic parity or that there aren't any people who are just bigots regardless, but rather that redistribution will take much of the wind out of its sails and gives you a much better place to work from, which is hard to argue with.

E: I guess I'd also ask her, fair enough, but what is your actual plan then?

The problem was that their economic anxiety was not often that rational (as in, their incomes weren't as threatened as they thought they were), and was strongly correlated with racial anxiety. Trump exploited middle-class racism more than working-class alienation and deprivation.

going by 2017 results Labour would need another ~2 million votes for a majority, which is about 4.5% extra on top of the actual turnout of 68.8%

the last election which had >73% turnout was in 1992

Eh, deprivation isn't strongly correlated with fascism. Their base tends to be middle-class voters who feel their comfortable lives are under threat from a rising underclass. Trump didn't actually pick up a statistically greater number of low-income voters than Romney, but did get a small surge of middle-income voters, while Hillary got a broadly similar number of votes to Obama, with a large drop in low-income voters being compensated for by a roughly equal surge of middle-income voters. Similarly, Johnson's base correlated much more strongly with age than income - he picked up a lot of voters in deprived areas, but that doesn't mean the voters themselves were deprived.

You could probably make an argument that fascism correlates with the middle classes realising how bad deprivation is and growing fearful of how the poor would react if they ever developed class consciousness.

No, there's a clique including her, Liz Kendall and Harriet Harman who are waiting for their chance to brand centrism as the feminist option. At worst they'll flee to the LDs but my best guess is that they'll just be permanent melts.

GMB have done a fair lot with them and other "contractors" in terms of getting them normal workers protections, but I suspect you might mean the Independent Workers Of Great Britain, who have concentrated specifically on Uber and the various food delivery places, and been behind a number of recent strikes, pickets, and other disruptions.

Yes I just found their page.

We're also interested in zero hours contracts representation so GMB is also a good link. Also something that came up in a meeting we were discussing these things at, retail workers and other zero hours contracts.
