The target of Norm's jokes is the preconception that exists in the listener's mind, and the fact that it exists at all to be called out. It does not age well or work on audiences that are not in on the formula. Whether you want to be funny to a handful of people and a douchebag to the rest vs. being funny to a majority of people and ignored by the minority is a choice he made long ago. I do not personally think Norm is the comic genius that some people hold him up to be but I won't pretend that I don't get what he's swinging at.

I mean you can think he’s overrated, but he’s overrated by literally every working comedian on the planet. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t absolutely revere Norm, and he’s like a conservative, anti-drug, pro-life Christian volcel and still more respected than anyone else except maybe Dave Chapelle.

Totally, I get it. I don't hate the guy at all and he absolutely has his frequent moments. But do the working comedians love what he says, or the subtle elaborate framework that he constructs via his long-term persona in order to frame his comedy? It's like appreciating difficult art. An artist will appreciate different things in a piece based on the painter's body of work, etc. that may seem vulgar or awkward to a regular gallery person. He's a comedian's comedian and some people appreciate him as such; but many seem to appreciate him just because they emulate the comedians who appreciate him. Either way is fine, because it's personal--I just can't seem to make up my mind either way.
