Frog Act posted:yeah this is something that's been apparent abstractly for many years but watching so many of my political enemies marching around, armed, in familiar places is a visceral reminder that the actual left can't muster that kind of enthusiasm or presence to save their lives, especially in the south All sorts of left wing issues bring out humongous crowds. They just don't march around armed because 1: they're not marching about their sacred ability as white people to have guns and 2: whenever left wing groups have weapons and gather they get shot but I know in the moment you can go "man, where's the enthusiasm for our stuff?" Cause it feels like every crazy rear end in a top hat in the world came out for this one state bill, so at least they're energized. But like: every crazy rear end in a top hat came out for this one state bill. This is the biggest thing in the world for these people. Grondoth has issued a correction as of 20:24 on Jan 20, 2020 |

The pictures make the rally look deceptively big - it’s a super cramped area and there only in a few blocks. It’s not 100,000 people. Also counter protest groups specifically told people to stay away and the laws are going to pass (they have bipartisan support among VA residents including 80% of Republicans)

It's possible it might make people distance themselves from this, too. I mean, headlines that say "thousands of armed protesters" are scary headlines, and the bill itself is not big at all. A bunch of guys with guns and masks marching around to protest background checks and limiting the right for people to parade around in open spaces openly armed looks... odd if you're not deep in the gun-weirdo headspace.

a big reason why the republicans got massacred in 2018 was refusing to even talk about gun control, including measures that a vast majority of VA residents supported, so this is not a good look for them. also insane activists pushing “gun sanctuary” policies through small town councils is also a gross and bad look. and for context there have been rallies in Richmond that have drawn as many participants who actually live in the city and not traveled thousands of miles

MizPiz posted:Doesn't stop leftists in literally every other country It is difficult to make a simple comparison with other countries and end up with a meaningful analysis, since the US is in a weird place. A lot of the national identity is based around individualism and the illusion of freedom. Like other nominally "free" countries voters supposedly hold overriding authority, but the political structure is warped/corrupted so real decisions are dictated by a kleptocratic oligarchy. (How many major parties do we have that represent their people and not the donor class?) The sham democracy facilitates indirect/nonviolent suppression so being a dissident isn't quite a suicidal as in overtly brutal totalitarian dictatorships... until the rich feel threatened. The history of leftist movements in the US is basically the definition of 'learned helplessness' so it is hard to miss the reasons why people get complacent/hopeless without falling into the despair/outrage that leads to revolutions. Bread-and-circuses also goes a long way toward maintaining stability but it's the kind of thing that works until it doesn't.

the traditional way that capital classes prevent revolt by the laboring classes is to 1) divide them and 2) buy some of them off. 1) has been very successful and continues to be, as class consciousness among the american proletariat has been suppressed to the point of nonexistence; but 2) is also required, and has been kind of falling apart lately as inequality accelerates, which has provided the crack needed for leftist resurgence

brugroffil posted:Also beating and murdering them that's part of 1, unless you think carnegie and rockfeller were out there with pipe wrenches. the cultivation of law enforcement as union-busters, COINTELPRO operators, and more recently protest-quellers is part of the strategy to turn the working class against itself. the whole cultivation of the tier 1 operator/WARFIGHTER cult of machismo, and the accompanying feminine-coding of leftist and antiwar movements (soyboys, cuck etc.) is a way to make the economic clash into a cultural one. police officers won't beat and kill protestors if they think that the protestors are agitating for the officers' rights-- but if they think that the protestors are trying to undermine Traditional Masculinity, of which they are the self-appointed guardians, they won't even consider the economic dimensions. this is also heavily racialized, and capital has successfully weaponized white male anxiety about racial equality to conscript young white men into attacking and killing advocates of change by appealing to a racist desire to defend whiteness. when white police officers killed ferguson protestors, they weren't thinking "aha, this'll ensure that i remain economically precarious by defusing a challenge to the capitalist power structure!" they were thinking "this'll teach them that white men are still in charge." the irony of being "in charge" when they're still living paycheck to paycheck, their kids won't get to go to college without huge debt, and they'll be working until they die is of course lost on them. individual senior officers do very well of course but that's part of 2.
