most gun ranges don't allow automatic fire because it's wildly dangerous, and the odds are exceedingly likely that anyone with an automatic new-model AR rifle illegally modified it but yeah, feds monitor ranges and the gun ranges themselves tend to not like foolishness

Even if the device were actually melted down into slag, it's highly likely that most of the incriminating evidence was already gathered, given how little is actually stored on devices anymore. Cops really like to seize phones since it ties all that electronic evidence to the person. It's much harder to claim you didn't send a message or that someone is framing you when they can bring out the device they found on you that sent or received those messages. It is, of course, possible to actually have solid information opsec, but it's difficult to setup and maintain, only requires one mistake to screw everything up, and is just a general pain in the rear end to use day to day. It's far easier to just not use tech at all and go very old school than to maintain that.
