The idea of Anisette organizing a concert isn't a bad one and could be done well, say, if Avan recruited Anisette to help distract the class from poo poo like Mischlitt's hometown.

Unfortunately these writers had their brain destroyed by paste and anime.

Update 21 - Night Maneuvers

Welcome back to this game folks, I've got a short update for you this time. We're tackling the end of Coleen's story today, and I'm saving any other events for the next update.

That means we're jumping in this headfirst, right into Coleen's third event, and then into the mission.

--

Music: Everyday Life of the Class

: I think I'm ready to tell my crush how I feel.
: But I'm still feeling scared, so... I just really need some help.

: Right. I've promised myself I'll tell him once I've found it.
: I think that's great. I'm so proud of you!

: They say the moonglow grows out in the Daws Desert...
: And that it only blooms at night.

: We can work tht patrol and go flower hunting while we're there.
: I'm sure we'll find it, Coleen. We just have to!

: Yeah, I kind of feel like I have to, too. Heh. So let's go get it done!

--

Nice and short, and completely inoffensive! Who could've guessed?

Kind of an odd statement, but if you ever want a real-world equivalent for "moonglow", moonflowers work just fine. They bloom only in the early morning and have really nice, wide ivory flowers. They also grow in an easily handled vine and their seeds are really easy to harvest.

What? I used to grow flowers. :colbert:

...Right, the mission.

Just how Mischlitt's mission let me show off a later zone earlier, Coleen's is similar. It differs in being actually quite brutal.

Avoiding engagement with the enemy is difficult on this map, so I'd suggest preparing for a fight. You're also limited to just Avan, Cosette, and Coleen while a sandstorm has fun ruining your strategy.

It's worth noting that only Coleen has to make it. Avan and Cosette can play the role of cannon fodder if need be.

Well, let's get to it. It's an interesting one, especially since I've actually never done this one before.

Player Turn Music: Desert Battle
Enemy Turn Music: Return Battle

Just wanted to note that the emulator seems to show debug text in the upper left corner. It seems to be related to an internal state system for handling turns.

Note that they give us 3 CP for 3 units. At least Anisette's gave us 2 CP per unit!

:negative:

Anyways, I start by scouting with Avan.

What the mission briefing didn't mention is that it's both nighttime and a sandstorm. Visibility is incredibly low here, so stumbling on enemies is really easy.

Don't be fooled though, your characters can still see some things easier than others.

Our characters' low AP really bites us in the hindquarters on this mission, notably getting Avan stuck out in the open. Looks like he'll be tanking for us, then.

Oh, here's the other effect of Sandstorm.

Those orange dots consist of what used to be my accuracy. I'd entirely forgotten about this, so I actually got a good laugh out of this.

I shot at this dude, but Avan ended up for the worse with it.

I send in Coleen next. It doesn't help that just reaching the top of the ramp eats about half her AP bar.

She loses half of her HP from the APC's gatling alone.

: "...I-I just..."

damnit

A second try gets me the explosion I wanted, but also takes my last CP.

I start to run forward, the nope the hell out of there when I see the shocktrooper.

I hide here for the round.

This...this could be a lot better.

A LOT better.

Coleen's barely alive now, thanks to this scout who manages to hit every shot, even in the storm.

Oh, for crying out loud. They've got another APC!?

Luckily, attacking with an APC's gatling only fires a few shots and isn't nearly as bad as it's interception fire.

Alright, Coleen, clear this APC out for us.

: "Today's gonna be okay!"

I sure hope so. I don't want to restart this a million times.

That being done, I run around the backside through the trenches with hopes that there would be less enemies.

I was wrong.

Cosette, I really need you in here to heal. I'm thinking I should've just sent her and Coleen only.

I get her to heal Avan on the way. Hopefully he'll be useful standing out in the open.

The skybox is nice though.

: "Come on! Let's get through this!"

Coleen gets healed and I get an odd camera angle.

Unfortunately, it's the enemy turn already.

Cosette goes down, having taken too much interception fire.

Sorry about that, Cosette. You're a fun character sometimes, and that counts for something.

Apparently, shooting our least combat efficient member of the team was enough for them.

Avan goes for some payback, but even with Close Combat, his accuracy still looks like this.

He manages to get 6 shots out of 20, and that's all he needed.

I ran him forward to draw attention away from Coleen. At this point, I'm probably just going to make a mad dash for the exit.

: "No, Cosette... open your eyes!"

:smith:

(Why can't this game stick to a tone?)

This shouldn't work.

But somehow it did. Nice work, Coleen.

With my last CP, I get Coleen to the mission objective.

Cripes, that went poorly. Oh well, the A rank for this map probably has--

HOW

How are you expected to make it there in 2 turns? I mean, I guess you leave Avan behind and have Coleen tank the damage with help from Cosette?

Argh.

...I'll just A rank this later. This mission's not that fun to play. The concept's cool, but they really didn't set this up with fun in mind.

--

Music: Theme of Class G
always with this music, I swear

|Listen to the voice acting here|

: C'mon, Coleen. It's dangerous to stay out here. Let's head back.
: We'll come back again when the weather is better. Okay?

: I have to find it.

*She runs off.*

: Coleen, wait!

There's the sound of a fall and Coleen cries out.

Meanwhile, Avan stands here blinking for a few seconds. He doesn't react.

Gritty, dark high school drama about a flower. This is what we're reading.

: Even if he says no. Even if he hates me... I want him to know.
: ...This must be how all of those other guys felt when they came to me.
: And I just shrugged them all off... I feel terrible.

Music: Days With Classmates

Funny, it looks more like that one flower from VC1, but sure, whatever.

: I don't think I've ever seen you that driven.
: You must really like this guy.
: With that kind of fire, you won't need a magic flower to win him over.
: I agree! When he sees what we just saw, he'll know how lucky he is.

Morris? Not who I was expecting, but sure, okay.

: But he's so somall, it was awkward picking me up. People were laughing.

Wait, Morris is short? How the hell was I supposed to know? The models don't reflect any of this stuff.

: Others said he looked silly, but he was a prince in my eyes.
: I want him to know that. To know how I feel.
: I'm sure he'll feel the same way.

--

Well, that was nice. I don't mean that sarcastically, like I usually do.

Here's the updated info:

Moonglow makes Coleen quite a good offensive lancer now, so that's nice. It pairs well with Super Vs. Armor, but then again, Rudolf could just do 1200 armor damage with one very accurate shot.

Oh, and we've got 90,000 DCT now and nothing to buy with it. Money's a non-issue in this game if you keep doing these character missions.

Anyways, that's all for this time, folks. Next time, I'll be tackling the last mission for the month and I'll be out of buffer.

The character models don't reflect it because VC2 mostly uses a generic male and female body for each class, then just swaps a character head on to it, which makes everybody look nearly identical.

I think there are only a few exceptions, such as Juliana (since the disappaearance of her gigantic tits would be too noticeable), but I could be wrong.

It's really noticeable if you take a good look at guys like Raymond. His head is way too big for the scrawny generic body model and it looks really goofy.

In terms of Morris, he is sort of small. He's 5 foot 5, I think. Colleen is still shorter though (5' 4). They were probably referring to physical bulk in this scene, since Morris is supposedly kind of weak in that department. Granted, we're talking about anime and VC2 here, so it's not like Avan or Zeri look that much stronger. Raymond and Reiner are some of the only guys that look like they've got power in them.

Yeah, I know, I was asking for sake of stating the obvious issues. I hadn't considered they might be referring to simply muscle, but as you said, it's really hard to tell with this stuff.

Also, there's a spoiler in there, but at this point I'm not sure if it even matters, really. Most people would be able to guess it.

Update 22 - Mega Update, Giant Sci-Fi Lasers, Maximum Anime
Welcome back to this game about wacky life at a military school. No, wait, it was a dark and grim game about military schools... No, that's not right either.

Hell with it, this time we'll be doing the last mission for the month.

We've got two events I've saved up first, though. Can't let you go without your high tension high school hijinks after all.

~* ??? (Rebel HQ) - Daily Event *~

This dude barely changes expression, and since I've always been consistent (I haven't), I'll just be labeling these dude as I usually do.

: That's Berthol, isn't it? In the east. Is that where you come from?

:hist101: : Yes, sir! But... How do you know about a little town like Berthol?

: Broad seas of wheat, the townsfolk busy at work... A calm, beautiful town.

:hist101: : Plus, the Archduchess's confession brought in a wave of Darcsen refugees.
: Yes, all of the border towns suffered a flood of Darcsens from the Empire.

And here I was, hoping this might be a nice, wholesome event.

Thanks game.

: House Randgriz plots to turn Gallia into a nation of Darcsens!

:hist101: : That's not... We can't let that happen!

:hist101: : I'm ready to risk my life for the cause, sir!

--

drat it, game, you could've worked towards having villains better than "Rah, ethnic cleansing, rah!"

...Eh, why do I even bother caring at this point? Let's just get to the main story then.

~* Classroom - Story Event *~

Music: Days With Classmates

: Me?
: What did you do this time?

He slams the desk as he says this.

: What?
: Search me. I guess we'll know when we get there.

Music - Briefing

: Knock knock, teach.

: A Gallian government dignitary is visiting the south.
: We've recieved a request for an escort squad.
: We'll be guarding a VIP?
: That's right. The task has fallen to Class G.

: Class G still needs a lot of training. I'm worried this mission is above us.
: Perhaps so. If your luck is bad, you may lose a few people out there.
: But such is war.
: It's hardly out of place for a soldier to die in the line of duty, hm?
: That is so, but, sir...

: The moment you all walked onto campus, you became Gallian soldiers.
: Cast away any illusions of comfot now. There are no guarantees to comfort you.
: Um...
: Your task is to succeed at this mission at any cost.

: Okay, we're on it! Class G's gonna see this through, I promise!

~* Briefing Room - Pre-battle Event *~

: Class G will escort them via armored vehicle to their destination.

: A tank's coming? Makes things pretty easy for us, doesn't it?

Music: Theme of the Rebels

:hist101: : Armed escort confirmed! We believe they're from Lanseal, sir!

: I'd expected more than just children from the tone of Father's orders.
: Dirk! Take your men and secure the target!
: Put any who get in your way to those azure flames!
: ...Understood.

Music: The Rebel's Assault
This is the closest I could find.

Music: Defense Battle

: If a human target were hit by that beam attack, there'd be nothing left.

--

So that happened. If you're thinking we're royally screwed, then you'd be right.

This mission's not so bad with promoted units, especially snipers. Unfortunately our only promoted unit is Marion, and its not really enough.

I'm doing it anyways to show you how hard it is without them. It's still possible to make an A-rank, but it's not going to be clean.

Those new names on the enemies list is why this map is hard. V2's are basically Dirk, but with somewhat less defense and power. The Supply Vehicle is something special, and I'll cover that when we get to one.

The map is also foggy, causing a map-wide reduction in accuracy. It hurts you way more than it will the enemy.

It took me a few retries to get this right, so I'm only showing the succesful run. The APC starts here, at Old Castle. If you're going for A rank, you don't need to care about deploying really anyone here. I unfortunately did. You'll see why it's a bad idea.

This one's by no means perfect and makes lots of mistakes, but let's get to it already.

It's worth noting that the armored car we get is significantly stronger than the usual Escort APC. It still sucks at combat, but it'll be fine as long as it doesn't take a big laser.

This is why you don't place any personnel units here: Dirk is pointed right at you. The best plan is to immediately haul rear end and get out of here. Since the APC can't capture bases, someone's either going to have to run for it (bad idea) or you'll need to cap it from the other side.

I'm capping the base from the other side. First, I send in Noel to handle this Supply Vehicle.

These things are poorly named if you ask me, but I guess I understand what they were going for with the name.

Supply Vehicles provide extra power to the V2s and Dirk (if present) in the current area, causing a massive increase in defense, and a heavy increase in offense.

They are still vulnerable to lances though.

I leave Noel on the cliffside to potentially fire at this trooper later.

This is just a straight run forward to this base. It's entirely undefended. Chloe's out of AP, so I send her back.

The V2 on that hillside will just stay there, but I'm going to try and make it past him anyways. Helmut's up.

Ow. This was the first shot. This is why I was making a big deal about the Supply Vehicles- these guys hit like trains even without them.

Helmut gets lucky and only takes 2 shots. Unfortunately, I'll have to do it again just up ahead.

Don't expect to kill these guys very easily. They also retaliate, so keep that in mind.

Noel makes an incredibly risky shot, clearing the way for Helmut.

He limps his way to the flag. Good job, dude. None of the other scouts would've made that.

That opens up the last map, but I don't have enough to properly defend it. I accidentally sent Helmut back, so I'm probably going to lose the base again anyways.

My last action for the round is to get the APC the hell out of there. The V2s also have that giant laser attack you saw in the cutscene, and it tears through vehicles.

This thing has incredibly high defense, but keep in mind that was only two shots from Dirk. He still hits hard, and especially hard at close range.

Escort APC's automatically transfer to the next zone, so I'm mostly safe for now. I'm not looking forward to taking a lance shot, but I have to do it.

First movement the enemy gets, they move Dirk, because of course they do.

Avan only survives because two shots whiff past him. The others were dead on. He's left with 37 HP.

Here's the big laser I was talking about. The V2s usually only use it at long range.

Avan continues his dodging spree.

Which is promptly ended by a second lance shot.

Oops. This is why I said to not deploy any units on this map.

As expected, they re-capped the base Helmut nearly died for.

The lancer miraculously manages to whiff his lance shot.

My turn again. I send Coleen to try her hand at taking one of these V2's down.

It's...not great. These were counted as headshots by the way. I didn't have to take this guy out, but I really need to get another scout down there. Not leaving Helmut in the area was a serious mistake.

The third screenshot is after the second attack. Somehow I missed it.

Coleen's left stranded on the hill, and for some reason I waste AP moving Alexis, then retreating him.

Then, instead of a scout, I send in Marion for some reason. I guess I wasn't very sure if a scout would survive the second V2.

My last CP leaves the APC hiding under the cliffside.

Dirk moves up and steals the base I just moved the APC from.

They don't do anything else but spawn Fire Emblem style reinforcements off the side of the map at said base.

Now that it's my turn again, I rush the APC to this flag. With the Supply Vehicle still gone (yes, they respawn), this guy can't do too much damage to the APC.

Marion barely manages to get the base, which shows that it was a good idea to use her instead of Chloe.

Unfortunately, I wasted 2 CP by moving the APC here first. I assumed that I would be able to send it through like I'd recall a unit, but no, you have to have to do it in action mode.

This game really sucks sometimes.

The deadly pop star kindly gives her regards to the lancer that stole this base back.

Then I have her grab another base. It was completely undefended, so hopefully it should distract Dirk for a while.

I then set Mischlitt to hold the base. She still takes 6 damage, even through the shield. The trick to these guys is to have fencers, as their improved defense makes them nearly immune to the lasers even without the shield. Their damage to V2s isn't anything to snub your nose at either.

With Noel standing near our home base, but not close enough for a free recall, and Coleen left on that cliffside, it's left to reserve choice Rene to clear this Supply Vehicle.

: ...And it's good!

Her lines are all soccer based. That being done, I hide her in the grass, hoping the V2s don't start moving and come for her.

There is never enough CP.

Dirk re-caps the base he was at before. If you're wondering why I'm doing this, it's that he will activate a Withdraw order, and place himself in a new map if you give him time to. However, he prioritizes capturing bases first and will always do that before he moves on.

Like every boss, he can act twice, but he's not likely to.

In the meantime, a V2 lands one shot on Mischlitt and it hurts.

A jerk shocktrooper moves up and shoots Coleen.

Sorry about that, Coleen, but I blame the game for not letting me dismiss the APC from the map.

After a few enemy movements, it's my turn again. I can Hospitalize her for 2 CP, and I'd really like to say I did.

...I didn't, though. I opted to finish the mission first, since doing that will auto-recover any fallen units.

ughhhh, you suck, game

:sigh:

Well, there goes my CP.

Of course they have one standing right there.

I can't just rush my APC to the end because I have too little AP because it wouldn't let me withdraw the APC from the map.

Knowing I don't have enough to finish the round right here and now, I retreat Anisette and then deploy her back at the nearest base to the lancer.

He's not very hard to take down.

With my last action this round, I put Mischlitt back on the base. Spawning the APC knocked her away for whatever reason.

There ends my turn.

: "Shoot to kill!"

The enemy opens with this. As I said before, I was delaying him from doing this. I should be in the clear now.

Well, mostly clear. This basically means I've got one turn before he wrecks everything.

That's fine. He's too late anyhow.

I only needed one more full turn of movement to make it here.

You said it.

Despite the irritating factors of that mission, it has a really kind turn requirement for A-rank.

Still basically useless.

Wha-

Anisette, what the hell are you going to do with 4 certificates? You only ever need one, at best, two at worst!

Eh, whatever. It kinda sucks this is when they give you some certificates for once, especially if you farmed them before coming here.

: Please, be at ease. I want to thank you all.

: I heard a village in this region was leveled by a rebel attack not long ago.

: I pray they are enough to stem the prejudice and hatred poisoning Gallia.

: But I'm sure folks'll see how much you care about the people hit by the war.

: Oh, one more thing. I brought these to share with the villagers.
: If you would like some though, it would please me to share them.

: Cinnamon rolls. They're a favorite of mine.

This game and it's bread, I swear. It's obsessed with it.

*She presumably gets back in and the APC is heard driving off.*

I mean it's a nice gesture, but can't she do a bit better than some cinanamon rolls? Some funds? Maybe some help repairing?

: It was as if she'd walked right out of the legends of the old Valkyrur.
: I've heard the fairy tales but I didn't think they were THAT strong. Man...

Cripes, that's that update done with. Also, there goes my lovely update buffer.

I've gotta say, I planned on sending this savefile to the recyling bin and never having to look at this travesty of a game anymore. I'd already started a different, more fun LP, but drat, I can't bring myself to do that. Not now at least, not with as much demand that's been shown for me to continue.

I'll finish this accursed thing in one way or the other, out of spite for it if necessary. Unfortunately, I don't have full time to work on this anymore (well, I do, but I have other projects I really should get to working on,) so something needs to happen to cut these updates a bit.

Regardless, the update schedule's going to need to be cut way back. I really don't need to dedicate every living hour of my life to this mediocre entertainment software, which would happen if I didn't slow these updates down. How far they get pushed back isn't yet determined.

What I need from you, readers, is tell me how you'd like me to continue this LP.

Should I cut out character/ daily events entirely?

Should I cut out most, if not all combat, like this LP did from the start?
Do you want me to just power through only the main story events?

Long story short, this thing is staying alive, so what do you want to see most and what would you not care about if it was removed from the LP?

If you have any particular questions about anything regarding the LP, you can ask here or send me a private message.

Apologies go to any lurkers who have an opinion on the subject and can't reply.

2 years! 2 goddamn years to go from Maximilian requiring an entire power plant built into a battleship and possibly permanently loving up his body just to barely wield the power; to full production model field-deployed mobile Artificial Valkyria. This was done by a loving backwoods rebel faction (and whatever clandestine helpers they had) in the midst of rebuilding in the aftermath of a continent-wide war. Also, Maxi's prototype was destroyed. I want to remind people that (based on what we see throughout the VC games) Europa has yet to master the concept of flight.

The worst part is, this isn't even the as bad as this game gets with that unbelievable garbage.

Also, Maxi's prototype was destroyed. I want to remind people that (based on what we see throughout the VC games) Europa has yet to master the concept of flight.
I don't know much about this game besides it being an unexpected hit. I only watched VC1 and played and bit and didn't stick around. Heck the rest of my connection to the game series was skins in Company of Heroes 2 (oh God that games story too is a doozy)

I imagine that being an unexpected hit, a sequel was obligated to follow. But not being a big named series like Sanic, it was shunted off to be a draw for the PSP. Mobile game being smaller risk as well, in case the goose only laid one golden egg.

So smaller team, smaller writing crew, but same strenuous work schedule. Job was to pump out a sequel, keep mechanics, innovate in ways. But VC1 also had a good story that was a big draw. How does a smaller writing crew with a deadline evolve from there? Well, push things to 11. First game had anime elements, why not expound on those in twenty different ways. Shove in the tropes. Gotta market to that Otaku cash cow as well so throw in some big breasted women and a 1000 year old dragon nuclear alien. Shonen Jump MC's are popular, just make the lead a copy of them. Mascot too, but make it a bird-like creature (that thing is not a bird it's an alien too).

Everything in here so far is ripped from media tropes and it's done badly. No character feels like they have synergy together, which is astounding cuz it's a high school setting how do you mess it up this badly. Which reminds me, it feels like a God drat high school RP. Some characters are grouped together due to role and they have interaction, and there is a general association because of being in the same class. But it's isolated moments between one character and the Mc or a few characters. No overall relations beyond "same class". Which is again astounding given thst these people are God drat fighting again real enemies in life and death civil war.

And someone intentionally designed this sexualized outfit for this character.

IIRC you can cheese the V2s by going into firing mode and then cancelling out of it, moving, then going back into firing mode.

Note that this order doesn't cost the enemy any CP

Yeah, you can cheese nearly enemy by doing that if you're fast enough. I'd usually just put a tank shell to their face instead of running past them, but it's an escort mission with a useless APC, so...

And also, yes, it has no CP cost. I have to pay 4 CP for a minor accuracy buff to one unit.

Orders are useless.

Psycho Knight posted:

The worst part is, this isn't even the as bad as this game gets with that unbelievable garbage.

Don't even get me started on this dumpster fire of a mission. APC Escort combined with tank-killer class enemies.

Oh yeah, and I agree with cutting combat. Show highlight moments or cool stuff, but you don't need to focus so much on turn-by-turn stuff.

The game only goes downhill in its pursuit of maximum anime. It's at times like these I have to sit back and wonder how I ever had any positive thoughts regarding this game.

This mission's trash fire nature is only exacerbated by the fact it is incredibly slow to farm for promotions prior to it. Just having a single sniper and two fencers, (or an actual tank,) can make dealing with the V2's easier, but this whole mission is just trolling you all the way down. I only scraped through it because I insisted on keeping Captain Edge McAnime busy recapturing his bases- if I didn't, he just charges the APC and wipes it out easily. For those of you who are lucky enough to not have played this game, V2s and Dirk have a specific armorslaying attack that basically treats any vehicle like the tank in the cutscene.

Your APC stands literally no chance. All of this happens because the incredibly passive ruler is going to deliver cinnamon rolls to a ruined village and they trust a school group to serve as most of her defense.

-----
It seems like we've got a pretty wide consensus on cutting out combat for the most part, which I'm fine with. The combat in this game isn't going to progress beyond rushing bases as absolutely fast as possible, and there's only a few notable combat situations left for the rest of the game.

We've had a few requests that specifically mention keeping character events, so I'll keep up with doing those, and that also means I still need votes for which characters we're going to see the events of next. I might start doing event summaries if only for some entertainment on my side given there's only so much I can say about the never ending stream of anime.

So... right. Character votes. Er, you folks remember the rules right?

6 votes total put negatively or positively towards a character. Oh, and you can vote for a new team name and tank name as well, 6 letters maximum.

Right, we've got this:

Completed Character Stories:

Marion,
Mischlitt,
Anisette,
Coleen

Incomplete:

Noel,
Helmut,
Franca,
Chloe,
Lotte,
Melissa,
Sofia,

Here's the last character list I did.

Oh, and there's also these three dinks, they're characters now:

Also I hope not too many people care if I stop giving a gently caress about making individual portraits for each expression. I have to do the transparency by hand and this game really doesn't deserve that effort from me, at least not from Angry Twybil.

God, this games story sucks.

I don't know if deadline and rushed sequel were the main causes. I think it was more a case of direction. They wanted VC2 on the PSP because the PSP was doing really well in Japan at the time. Because the PSP was way more popular in Japan, they decided to make VC2 cater to the Japanese as heavily as possible. That's what led to this "kitchen-sink" approach of "Okay, we need to add multiplayer, also a poo poo-ton of barely different missions, also material grinding, also a loli, oh but we can't leave out the signature big boobed girl so let's make her the 'rival' instead, and then you've got to put in more lasers and an idiot as the hero and an Edy clone for the idol fans, and oh yeah: set it in a high school. Very important that it's set in a high school."

Possibly because of this heavy catering, VC2 generally sold like garbage in the west. This resulted in us not getting VC3, which was a far superior game. I had to import a copy in order to play it.

I'm not sure if any of the writers from the first game were brought over. They did bring in the producer, character designer, and main composer. Not sure about the director or lead writer though.

That's sad. It really does act as a commentary on this entire game.

I refuse to spend money on anything else for this game. I have:

VC1 on PS3
Steelbook VC1 on PS4
VC1 Design Works
VC1 PS3 Skin (the PS3 it was on died at one point, but I pulled the faceplate off to save the skin)
VC3 Extra Edition
VC3 Complete Artwork
VC4 PS4 Collector's Edition
VC4 for Switch

I have 1 copy of VC2 and that's the way it will stay, forever. I have no plans of replacing it if something were to ever happen to it. :colbert:

Ratoslov posted:

This is also incredibly sad because of how true it is. Julianna was originally a dude, but the developers changed the character to be a girl because they didn't want Cosette to be the busty one and their Valkyria was a loli, so they apparently figured "Let's just change the rival character and give her the massive chest. Somebody's got to have it. We'll figure out the character after."

Actually, there is a reason for this. The Empire/Federation do have dirigibles that they use (the Empire actually has an "Airforce" division of their forces). However, much like in World War I, airships aren't super useful for battles over the front lines. That's probably why they don't appear much in the VC games. It's also probably why they re-purposed Anti-Air guns for use as Tank Destroyers/Artillery.

This is a section from my copy of the design works for VC1 (the chart showing the Imperial Navy, Army, Airforce structure is just above this one in the book). As of EWII, the Empire had at least 1 Airborne Infantry battalion (pretty sure these numbers are only referring to the soldiers under Gustav's command. The Empire has way more soldiers than this).

The design works does talk about several countries outside of Gallia that have been researching flight. The notes on the ISARA Biplane say that Gallia fell behind in flight research and therefore "It is rare to see a plane over Gallia". But I can't think of any moment in any of the games where planes are seen or even mentioned other than the ISARA. It's possible that the Empire or countries in the Federation (or Edinburgh/Vinland) have planes, but it doesn't appear that they had managed to perfect it to the point that they could field them in a war. The anti-aircraft guns that the Tank-Destroyer's main gun was built from seems designed to shoot down airships, not airplanes. We don't see any flak weapons during the games. So all signs point to Airships being the only widespread means of flight in this universe.

Anyway, all of this is just me highlighting the stupidity of the anime-Confederacy having access to second generation artificial Valkyria. Not even purely in terms of technology. I mean, where the gently caress are the rebels getting all the excess Ragnite needed to power the V2s? Fouzen (the main Ragnite mining area of the country) is in the north of Gallia and the rebels are based in the south.

Update 23: You Can Stand Me Up At the Gates of Anime

...but I won't back down!

Er, right. Unfunny intros aside, I said I'd finish this mediocre piece of software, so let's just just go ahead and do that.

It's been decided in the thread to just ignore covering combat since it just happens to be basically the same thing every time. From now on, I'm just covering story stuff- if anything of note happens in a combat mission, an unlikely event, I'll tell you. Hell, if anything of interest happens in the story it'll be a miracle.

Oh, and I'm not even going to remotely feign that I think this game has any redeeming qualities anymore. If you for whatever reason like this game, I'm still basically only going to be complaining about it. There's not much for me to defend here.

Great, let's get to this stuff because I'd rather have to deal with this game for as short a time as I possibly can. Because this game no longer deserves my effort, I'll just be using a basic portrait for everyone now. It saves a surprisingly large amount of time on my end, and you've bound to have gotten the gist of them by this point.

~Classroom - Story Event~

_huh: It's a collection of proofs asserting their actual existence.

Valkyria exist. You just saw one. There was more than one in the last war. I'd think more than a few soldiers from that war would have claimed so.

: Apparently a number of archaeology experts think they were real.
: None make mention of their alleged powers, though. That's likely a myth.
: What powers were those, again?

: Right, where the Valks took out the Darcsens a bajillion years ago.
: The Darcsens supposedly terrorized Europa with ragnite technology.
: Until the Valkyrur swept in an stopped them, or so the story goes.
: There's not a shred of archaeological evidence to back it. It's myth.

: Wait, blue flame, a lance, and a shield? That sounds like that girl we saw.
: That's what made me curious. I thought I'd read up on it.

: After seeing her fight, I'd believe she stepped right out of a legend.

I'd believe I had stepped right into an anime. A bad one.

: So what, this time the Valks are sweeping in to stop the rebels?
: Who can say? But some of those rebels bore the same traits.
: If the rebel army has a force of Valkyrur, that's a serious threat.
: Stopping their revolution would suddenly become lot more complicated.

: Right. We'll make it work!

: But you're right that the rebels can't be ignored.
: Anyway, we can ask the little squirt if she's a Valk the next time we see her.

Twybil's Summary posted:

: Hey, it's my turn to be the exposition fairy, again. You know those crazy white haired girls with lasers might just exist. There's evidence.
: Wow, really? What do they do again?
: They shoot lasers. Also they're responsible for ruining my people.
: Wow, lasers? Sounds like that underage kid.
: She's probably one, but I can't say for sure because suspense. Anyway, we should stop the rebels.
: Stop the rebels, woo!
: Hey guys, I'm here too! I exist!
: Where's my crayons?

Sorry, EvilKing, but I'm borrowing your format. Hope you don't mind.

Also, yes the game is really going to hold onto that "is the child a valkyria" routine for as long as it can. It will end with as little fanfare as possible, as will most plot points.

Meanwhile, we have a daily event.

~ Music Room - Daily Event~

Music: Everyday Life of the Class

: I don't think I've ever heard it all, though. It puts me to sleep.
: It is a gentle song, with a focus on strings.
: But yes, it is one of the more famous pieces of Gallian classical music.
: Then I look forward to hearing it.
: Are you big into music, Helmut?
: I don't dislike it. I find it calming.
: As do it. Listening to my music while petting my darlings is just heaven.
: Hmm, yeah, I think I'm happiest when I'm eating sweets.
: Hee hee. Then shall we have to break for tea after class, hm?
: Ooh, yay! I'm there!

Twybil's Summary posted:

: Hmm, foreign music.
: It's good stuff, trust me.
: It makes me sleepy.
: In a roundabout way, I must admit I like music.
: I load my guns while listening to it. And clean them, and-
: Can I have some candy?
: Sure!

----

That was a nice event, though it really doesn't match the tone of the game.

Well, that's basically a non-statement given this game doesn't have a consistent tone. Thanks game. As it is, it was an okay filler.

Oh, and here's another daily event.

~Hospital - Daily Event~

: Th-Thanks. It's a shipment of ragnaid stock, so it's pretty bulky.
: Sure is nice to have around, though. It's kind of amazing stuff.
: You just shine a light at an injury and bam!
: It really has changed things but it's still new to the medical field.
: Oh, is it?

: Word got around to some researchers, and they came up with ragnaid.
: Even then they still don't really understand how it works.
: Hah, that's crazy! I didn't know you were such an expert on it.
: Heh heh. It's about the only thing.
: B-but if you ever need treatment, I'll be there.
: I'm banking on it!

Twybil's Summary posted:

: Hey, that's a lot of boxes.
: It's ragnaid. It weighs a ton.
: Cool. How does it work exactly?
: It just does.
: Wow, you're an expert!

They give us a little backstory and then apply handwavium. That's just great.

Anyways, after a mission, we pick back up with the main story.

: I await any reprimand you see fit to serve me.
: Rrgh.
: The day we storm Randgriz is not far off.
: You will redeem yourself by seeing this revolution to its fruition.
: By the Gassenarl name I swear it.

: Yes, of course. Baldren, report on the performance of the V2s.

: A single blase proved sufficient to scrap a Gallian Army tank.
: With further refinement, one squad ought to rival one human battalion.
: A full battalion? Mm, that is good news.
: It bears note that they remain vastly inferior to the prototype V0, Dirk.
: And certainly to the true-blooded Valkyria of two years past.

: So the day they can enter the war in earnest is still a ways off.
: I'm expediting the process to try to keep ahead of the Empire's labs.
: This would be simple enough, had the Asgardian Council survived.

: But this is all good news. We have Dirk, and work on the V2s has borne results.
: We will retake Gallia with those two swords. All else begins from there.
: B-but, sir--

: That bit about the mission failing because of you. Was that true?

Yep, in a nutshell all we learn is that the V2's don't work nearly as good as they look like they do. There's a presently unaccounted for V1, and an Asgardian Council, but I honestly can't even say if we learn any more about those later.

Guess what? I've got another daily event right here to break it up for ya.

~Gymnasium - Daily Event~

Music: Everyday Life of the Class

: Turn right!
: About face!
: You're slow, Haswell! What class are you in?

: Then act like it! Failure is not permitted. Class A is without flaw.

:sparkles: : Yes, ma'am!

: Next, to the drill ground. We'll practice for the Laevatein Cup. Now, march!

:byodood: Yes, ma'am!

Twybil's Summary posted:

: Training? Who even does that?

: Step to it! We're not a bunch of losers!

:sparkles: : Ooh, I don't want to be a loser!

: Training, training, training!

: Pff, I'm not training. We'll beat them anyways, because of course we will!

--

Sorry, I know that wasn't much. That's all I've got for that event; I'm hoping my summaries speak for me. Anyways, let's do the last two story events before I hit the events related to the end of month mission.

~Classroom / Cafeteria - Story Event~

: Steak, you said? All right.

: Ha ha! Your cheeks are puffed out like some kind of chipmunk.
: Watching you eat is killing my appetite.
: Hey, there's nothing wrong with tucking into some grub! Even Leon said so!
: "A full belly is a full heart," he said!

If you have a full heart in this case, I'm afraid you're probably having a heart attack.

: Of course, he'd already fought in the Militia for two years by that point.
: It was there he was scouted for Lanseal.
: He even had a nickname, the Scarlet Lion, right? That's so cool!
: He actually got started back home. He formed and led a town watch.

: Ha ha! If it were anyone else, I'd think you had a big ol' crush on him!
: So one time, this crazy fugitive holes up in town. Hostaes, the whole works.
: Leon didn't want the other watchmen in danger, so he went in after him solo!
: He took a bullet, but he got the guy, AND got all the hostages out safe!

: I mean, who DOES that? I'd never have the guts.
: But why did he have to go in alone? Didn't he have people there he trusted?
: Huh?
: If something had happened to your brother, so many people would've been hurt.
: It makes me sad to think he took his own life that lightly...
: Uhh, Cosette?

: There's still some steak left on Zeri's plate, Avan!
: Ooh good call. If he's not gonna eat it, I will!

*Swipes the steak*

: Y-You just... You animal! Give it back! Spit it out this instant!

*Runs at Avan*

: H-hey, calm down, man. Put the fork down. This doesn't have to-- AAAUGH!

Twybil's Summary posted:

: Hey, we're having steak for lunch!
: FOOOOD
: Fine, I'll go.

--

: OM NOM
: Gosh, you're disgusting.
: Hey guys-
: It's not disgusting, Leon said so! Remember Leon? Do ya?! DO YOU REMEMBER LEON?!
: Wow, he must have been great. Let me exposit a bunch of information about LEON.
: I'll exposit too! He's the greatest! ISN'T HE JUST THE GREATEST?
: You've got a hard-on for your brother Avan. It's kind of-
: So there was this one time he single handedly took out a kidnapper and saved everybody!
: Isn't that a bit dangerous-
: Hell yeah, it is! I'm too much of a coward to do that myself.
: Suddenly I feel the need to vaguely reference a dark backstory in order to be noticed.
: Hey, you okay?
: Hey look, Avan, there's free steak!
: Give that back, you rear end! I shall stab you with my fork!
: drat, he's serious!
: Phew, they almost found out about my backstory.

-------

I think this is a pretty accurate summary. Again, Cosette spends most of her time trying to prove herself as something other than a third wheel, Zeri exposits, Avan goes on and on about LEON, THE GREATEST.

Cosette's basically been comic relief the whole game, but I think you can see how this game's inability to hold a tone is spreading deep.

Anyways, one more to go for today's update.

Back Alley - Story Event

Oh, yes. Murder gremlin loli here is part of the main plot now. Expect to see her a lot more often.

: Mm...
: My name's Cosette. What's yours?
: Aliasse.
: That's a pretty name. I'll call you Ali for short!
: And I'm Avan. Nice to meet you, squirt.
: So, we were wondering. Are you a Valkyria?
: Uh huh. Mama says I am.

: Well, either way, thanks for helping us out before. You really saved us!
: Thanks? What's thanks?
: Huh? Are you serious? Um, thanks is like...

: It made you happy when I fought?
: Well, sure! We would have been in a lot of trouble if you hadn't shown up.

: So if I kill a lot more people will you say thanks again?

...Yep. This is what we're getting.

: What?! No! We're thanking you for keeping us safe, not for killing anybody!
: What's the difference?
: You make it sound like fighting and killing are the same thing, Ali.

: They're flower seeds. Lion's paw, it's called. Have you ever seen it?
: I dunno. How's it taste?
: They're not for eating! C'mon, Ali, let's plant them here together.

Music: Days With Classmates

: Ha ha ha! This is fun!
: If you keep these seeds watered, they'll send up buds before you know it.
: The flowers have friends?
: What? Oh, no, not that kind of bud. A blossom, I mean. Want to water them?
: Um, sure! I want to try!

: She's an odd one, huh? Wonder if all Valkyrur are like that.
: She does have quirks, but she seems like a pretty normal little girl to me.
: She was so cute when she was concentrating on planting those seeds.

: I think I'll stick to my brother...

Twybil's Summary posted:

: *Conveniently present.*
: Hey kid, are you a legendary laser lady?
: Yep.
: Thanks for saving us!
: I will MURDER more if it'll make you happy.
: The gently caress?! I was just saying thanks for defending us!
: That's the same thing.
: Change of subject- I've got flower seeds all of a sudden!
: Tasty.
: We're not eating them, we're planting them!

*Plants seeds*

: Wow, Harvest Moon is great!
: Yeah!
: oops, gtg, be back tomorrow for raid- add me
: She's cute and incredibly normal.
: Yeah, whatever, she's not Leon, the greatest person to exist.

---

Yep, that just happened. Listen, Cosette, I hardly think murderchild here is normal. This game is dumb.

Eh, anyways, I'm basically playing out of the yearbook at this point. Those next 3 events are related to the end of month mission, so we'll catch up with those once I've finished up the handing out the character stories.

Speaking of those, we've got quite a couple this week: Alexis, Nahum, Vicky, Raymond, Helmut, and Chloe. They shouldn't take me too long to get written up, but I am working on two LPs right now and the other one is due an update real soon.

Catch you next time in our next update: Update 24: Character Stories - War and Art

One of these days I'll update the OP, I promise.

The Flying Twybil
Oct 20, 2019

So what? You can't prove I posted that.
Now that my schedule's cleared up, I'm surprisingly free for the next few days. I'll use these to burn full force through some more updates and to make a heavy backlog. That being said, I'm opening votes for Team Name, Tank Name, and character story choices again because I'm wanting to burn through some content very quickly and make a large backlog. (Also while working on my other LP)

Here's our current character progress, and the list is here as always

Completed Character Stories:
Marion,
Mischlitt,
Anisette,
Coleen
Helmut,
Chloe,
Nahum,
Vicky,
Raymond,
Alexis,

Started, but incomplete:
Noel,
Franca,
Lotte,
Melissa,

We've got these two new characters:

And Pete Stang, as always:

ON THE GREEN!

I wonder we can evolve this even further by just having the summaries and still get the point across.
