Ran across this channel recently (try to ignore the weird broney poo poo going on). https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvhepJ6q-OPGMsl-_EoW9zg This guy has a ton of super cool older videos I've never seen before.

I ran across that channel too recently, coincidentally (stop following my YouToob history ). I watched a couple videos on UP's gas turbines.

Did you know they were contemporaries of the Big Boys and Challengers and were sometimes paired with them to tackle Sherman Hill? I think about it a lot.

Kilonum posted:Is there an electric train equivalent to "foamer"? Foamer can be pretty generally applied to anyone who likes things that run on tracks a bit too much. Doesn't matter if it's diesel, electric or steam.

This train triggered one level crossing a full minute before the other one at this spot, what’d make it do that?

Is this a good thread to ask about model railroading? If so, what’s the best introductory text on the topic? NMRA’s website looks decent but I’m a bit bummed out that they recommend not even bothering with model steam locomotives because narrow gauge British and Irish trains are my main jam.

I'm afraid I don't have any help because I can't afford to do model railroading, but I'm definitely interested in what you have to offer as far as the Irish stuff goes. I went to Dublin in September and saw the fattest 4-4-0 I've ever laid eyes on and fell in love with Irish trains in general.

The scale modeling thread in DIY seems to be the most active place for model railroading discussion. As far as introductory texts there are a ton of good books out there but I can't cite a specific one I would recommend as I haven't really looked at generalist books like that since I was a teenager. Narrow gauge British and Irish steam is not a subject I know much of anything about, so I don't know if there are any good plastic models available. If not, your only option would be brass which may be prohibitively expensive for someone new to the hobby.

Do any model railroaders gently caress with making setups based off the soviet railways? or do the model companies not produce much in the way of stock for that?

Stairmaster posted:Do any model railroaders gently caress with making setups based off the soviet railways? or do the model companies not produce much in the way of stock for that? If you could find Soviet train bodies and mount them on Western bogies, that would be awful realistic. I think my father has a few old o-scale East German locos, I'll ask if he can dig them out of the attic. Oh hell, those would be great for an African set-up. Savannah to jungle. Good opportunity to practise "weathered" paint, too.

As for commercial offerings, from a little bit of googling this thread seems to have a number of links you might find interesting: https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/129601-ho-scale-russian-model-railways/ Unsurprisingly it seems like this sort of thing is easiest to find through sellers in certain parts of Europe. ProperGanderPusher, depending on what you're interested in about model railroading there may be a few other relevant threads. If you want to build a large setup the "don't burn your house down" wiring thread could become relevant, and it you like the idea of automating some things the arduino thread could also be in play.

To this you could add the Miniatures Painting Thread in Trad Games (I guess? Totally though it was in DIY) for tips on painting tiny people and stuff plus making scenery and what not. Also, I assume everyone here is aware that Rod Stewart finally finished his model railroad set after 26 years to sort of loop it back to Locomotive Insanity. Always check your hopper doors prior to loading. Though I have to say, that's beautiful coverage and a nice even spread.

Hi, train friends This is a airplane/train thread MIXED MODE double post. Can anybody explain what the hell is going on with bombardier? Were they not good at making trains? Are they now bad at trains? The company has sold its entire aviation holdings (C300/A220 partnership with Airbus, CRJ sold to Mitsubishi, all legacy designs like the Dash 8/Q400 sold to a BC aviation firm), with the only exception being its bizjets. And now they appear to be dying/dead everywhere else. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-01-21/bombardier-is-said-to-explore-combining-rail-unit-with-alstom

Nebakenezzer posted:Hi, train friends Last I heard, they banked the farm on the c300 now a220. The problem then became boeing. Boeing was able to talk the us commerce dept into a tariff on the c300 after delta announced a large bid for them. Boeing's argument was price dumping that harmed their own competing product. Except they don't have a small jet competitor. But commerce went with it and granted tariffs. That is when airbus stepped in. Airbus builds them in the us thus dodging the tariff. I dunno on the others, but my thought is it is still fall out from that. Airbus probably didn't pay enough to cover all the r&d costs. And that includes a loan from the canadian government.
